Title: Measurement of d2σ/d|q→|dEavail in charged current νμ -nucleus interactions at ⟨Eν⟩=1.86  GeV using the NOvA Near Detector
Double- and single-differential cross sections for inclusive charged-current ν μ -nucleus scattering are reported for the kinematic domain 0 to 2 GeV / c in three-momentum transfer and 0 to 2 GeV in available energy, at a mean ν μ energy of 1.86 GeV. The measurements are based on an estimated 995,760 ν μ charged-current (CC) interactions in the scintillator medium of the NOvA Near Detector. The subdomain populated by 2-particle-2-hole (2p2h) reactions is identified by the cross section excess relative to predictions for ν μ -nucleus scattering that are constrained by a data control sample. Models for 2-particle-2-hole processes are rated by χ 2 comparisons of the predicted-versus-measured ν μ CC inclusive cross section over the full phase space and in the restricted subdomain. Shortfalls are observed in neutrino generator predictions obtained using the theory-based València and SuSAv2 2p2h models. Published by the American Physical Society2025  more » « less

  1. The first results of the study of high-energy electron neutrino ( ν e ) and muon neutrino ( ν μ ) charged-current interactions in the FASER ν emulsion-tungsten detector of the FASER experiment at the LHC are presented. A 128.8 kg subset of the FASER ν volume was analyzed after exposure to 9.5 fb 1 of s = 13.6 TeV p p data. Four (eight) ν e ( ν μ ) interaction candidate events are observed with a statistical significance of 5.2 σ ( 5.7 σ ). This is the first direct observation of ν e interactions at a particle collider and includes the highest-energy ν e and ν μ ever detected from an artificial source. The interaction cross section per nucleon σ / E ν is measured over an energy range of 560–1740 GeV (520–1760 GeV) for ν e ( ν μ ) to be ( 1.2 0.7 + 0.8 ) × 10 38 cm 2 GeV 1 [ ( 0.5 ± 0.2 ) × 10 38 cm 2 GeV 1 ], consistent with standard model predictions. These are the first measurements of neutrino interaction cross sections in those energy ranges. Published by the American Physical Society2024

  2. Nuclear medium effects on B + meson production are studied using the binary-collision scaled cross section ratio between events of different charged-particle multiplicities from proton-lead collisions. Data, collected by the CMS experiment in 2016 at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of s NN = 8.16 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175 nb 1 , were used. The scaling factors in the ratio are determined using a novel approach based on the Z μ μ + cross sections measured in the same events. The scaled ratio for B + is consistent with unity for all event multiplicities, putting stringent constraints on nuclear modification for heavy flavor. © 2025 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2025CERN

  3. This Letter presents the most precise measurement to date of the matter-antimatter imbalance at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair s NN = 5.02 TeV . Using the Statistical Hadronization framework, it is possible to obtain the value of the electric charge and baryon chemical potentials, μ Q = 0.18 ± 0.90 MeV and μ B = 0.71 ± 0.45 MeV , with unprecedented precision. A centrality-differential study of the antiparticle-to-particle yield ratios of charged pions, protons, Ω baryons, and light (hyper)nuclei is performed. These results indicate that the system created in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC is on average baryon-free and electrically neutral at midrapidity. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN

  4. The production of the ψ ( 2 S ) charmonium state was measured with ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV , in the dimuon decay channel. A significant signal was observed for the first time at LHC energies down to zero transverse momentum, at forward rapidity ( 2.5 < y < 4 ). The measurement of the ratio of the inclusive production cross sections of the ψ ( 2 S ) and J / ψ resonances is reported as a function of the centrality of the collisions and of transverse momentum, in the region p T < 12 GeV / c . The results are compared with the corresponding measurements in p p collisions, by forming the double ratio [ σ ψ ( 2 S ) / σ J / ψ ] Pb Pb / [ σ ψ ( 2 S ) / σ J / ψ ] p p . It is found that in Pb-Pb collisions the ψ ( 2 S ) is suppressed by a factor of 2 with respect to the J / ψ . The ψ ( 2 S ) nuclear modification factor R AA was also obtained as a function of both centrality and p T . The results show that the ψ ( 2 S ) resonance yield is strongly suppressed in Pb-Pb collisions, by a factor of up to 3 with respect to p p . Comparisons of cross section ratios with previous Super Proton Synchrotron findings by the NA50 experiment and of R AA with higher- p T results at LHC energy are also reported. These results and the corresponding comparisons with calculations of transport and statistical models address questions on the presence and properties of charmonium states in the quark-gluon plasma formed in nuclear collisions at the LHC. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN

  5. We measure the tau-to-light-lepton ratio of inclusive B -meson branching fractions R ( X τ / ) B ( B X τ ν ) / B ( B X ν ) , where indicates an electron or muon, and thereby test the universality of charged-current weak interactions. We select events that have one fully reconstructed B meson and a charged lepton candidate from 189 fb 1 of electron-positron collision data collected with the Belle II detector. We find R ( X τ / ) = 0.228 ± 0.016 ( stat ) ± 0.036 ( syst ) , in agreement with standard-model expectations. This is the first direct measurement of R ( X τ / ) .
