Title: Measurements of Chemical Potentials in Pb-Pb Collisions at sNN=5.02  TeV
This Letter presents the most precise measurement to date of the matter-antimatter imbalance at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN =5.02TeV . Using the Statistical Hadronization framework, it is possible to obtain the value of the electric charge and baryon chemical potentials, μQ =0.18±0.90MeV and μB =0.71±0.45MeV , with unprecedented precision. A centrality-differential study of the antiparticle-to-particle yield ratios of charged pions, protons, Ω baryons, and light (hyper)nuclei is performed. These results indicate that the system created in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC is on average baryon-free and electrically neutral at midrapidity. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN  more » « less

  1. The ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high pT ) hadron trigger in proton-proton and central Pb-Pb collisions at sNN =5.02TeV . A data-driven statistical method is used to mitigate the large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions. Recoil jet distributions are reported for jet resolution parameter R=0.2 , 0.4, and 0.5 in the range 7< pT,jet <140GeV/c and trigger-recoil jet azimuthal separation π/2<Δφ<π . The measurements exhibit a marked medium-induced jet yield enhancement at low pT and at large azimuthal deviation from Δφπ . The enhancement is characterized by its dependence on Δφ , which has a slope that differs from zero by 4.7σ . Comparisons to model calculations incorporating different formulations of jet quenching are reported. These comparisons indicate that the observed yield enhancement arises from the response of the QGP medium to jet propagation. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN

  2. Top-quark pair production is observed in lead–lead ( Pb+Pb ) collisions at sNN =5.02TeV at the Large Hadron Collider with the ATLAS detector. The data sample was recorded in 2015 and 2018, amounting to an integrated luminosity of 1.9nb1 . Events with exactly one electron and one muon and at least two jets are selected. Top-quark pair production is measured with an observed (expected) significance of 5.0 (4.1) standard deviations. The measured top-quark pair production cross section is σ t t¯ =3.6 0.9+1.0 (stat) 0.5+0.8 (syst)μb , with a total relative uncertainty of 31%, and is consistent with theoretical predictions using a range of different nuclear parton distribution functions. The observation of this process consolidates the evidence of the existence of all quark flavors in the preequilibrium stage of the quark-gluon plasma at very high energy densities, similar to the conditions present in the early Universe. © 2025 CERN, for the ATLAS Collaboration2025CERN

  3. Nuclear medium effects on B+ meson production are studied using the binary-collision scaled cross section ratio between events of different charged-particle multiplicities from proton-lead collisions. Data, collected by the CMS experiment in 2016 at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of sNN =8.16TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175nb1 , were used. The scaling factors in the ratio are determined using a novel approach based on the Zμμ+ cross sections measured in the same events. The scaled ratio for B+ is consistent with unity for all event multiplicities, putting stringent constraints on nuclear modification for heavy flavor. © 2025 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2025CERN

  4. A search is presented for an extended Higgs sector with two new particles, X and ϕ , in the process Xϕϕ(γγ)(γγ) . Novel neural networks classify events with diphotons that are merged and determine the diphoton masses. The search uses LHC proton-proton collision data at s =13TeV collected with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb1 . No evidence of such resonances is seen. Upper limits are set on the production cross section for mX between 300 and 3000 GeV and mϕ/mX between 0.5% and 2.5%, representing the most sensitive search in this channel. © 2025 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2025CERN

  5. Energy correlators that describe energy-weighted distances between two or three particles in a hadronic jet are measured using an event sample of s =13TeV proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3fb1 . The measured distributions are consistent with the trends in the simulation that reveal two key features of the strong interaction: confinement and asymptotic freedom. By comparing the ratio of the measured three- and two-particle energy correlator distributions with theoretical calculations that resum collinear emissions at approximate next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy matched to a next-to-leading-order calculation, the strong coupling is determined at the Z boson mass: αS ( mZ ) =0.122 90.0050+0.0040 , the most precise αS(mZ) value obtained using jet substructure observables. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN
