This workshop’s goal is to help faculty who want to establish a course (or alternate vehicle) for mentoring undergraduates with some computer science background to participate in K-12 teaching computer science in local schools with engaging pedagogy. The workshop leverages the experiences and lessons learned from ten semesters of the organizers leading a course that meets once a week on campus for mentoring to support the undergraduates’ field experience in local schools and libraries. The workshop will dive deep into logistics including how to establish and maintain strong teacher partnerships, establishing student-teacher matches and weekly field experience schedules, weekly in-class activities and assignments to support the field experience, weekly student reflective journal prompts, and surveys for formative evaluation. Participants will actively reflect on their own contexts with potential opportunities and challenges, and organizers will facilitate small group discussions of how to address the challenges, different models for different contexts, and how to get started. Participants should leave with a plan for next steps toward offering a mentored undergraduate field experience in teaching computer science and access to a community of faculty who are working to help to broaden participation in computer science in K-12 while providing opportunities for undergraduates to hone their communication and leadership skills, increase their self confidence, and participate in giving back to the community using their technical skills.

SportSense: Engaging youth in data science experience in in-school and out-of-school K-12 contexts
For the past several years, our team has been developing and implementing curriculum and tools for integrating sports in data science learning experiences. We have developed a collection of activities and tools that we are eager to share with the larger data science community. The purpose of this session is to give participants an opportunity to explore some of these tools and activities in community with other data science educators and learners. The workshop will also serve as a space to try designing some new activities and ideate future directions for this work within the specific contexts of each workshop participant. Hence, we propose this workshop as a set of resources and a community that might spur new ideas that participants can adapt and extend based on the goals, needs, and affordances of their respective contexts.

A two day cyberinfrastructure alignment workshop was held in May 2025 as part of the Community-driven enhancement of information ecosystems for the discovery and use of paleontological specimen data project, which is funded under the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Open Science Ecosystem (GEO OSE) programme. Participants with expertise in informatics, technical cyberinfrastructure development and management and geo- and biological sciences were invited to foster a shared and increased understanding across this broad-community of the needs for palaeontological specimen data. This report describes the activities and outcomes of the workshop and how they will contribute to final deliverables for the grant funded project.more » « less

We investigated youth participation in three Community and Citizen Science (CCS) programs led by natural history museums in out-of-school settings. Using second generation Activity Theory, we looked at repeated participation over time, collecting and then qualitatively analyzing ethnographic fieldnote observations on focal youth participation and components of the activity systems. We found each program provided multiple and unique access points for youth to participate in environmental science. Further, when facilitators emphasized the scientific goals of the programs clearly and repeatedly, youth participation in the scientific processes of the CCS programs deepened. Access to scientific tools, facilitation in using them, and repeatedly applying them in authentic research, enabled youth to participate in different aspects of CCS, from exploring to submitting biological data. Repeated participation in CCS activities provided the opportunities for youth to try the same type of participation multiple times (intensification), as well as provided the opportunity for youth to try different types of participation (diversification). Our findings suggest that repeated participation in authentic scientific research in CCS contexts fosters youth development of new roles and possible development of environmental science identities.more » « less

null (Ed.)Interest in data science, especially within the context of grad- uate education, is exploding. In this study we present initial results from an ongoing qualitative study of an interdisciplinary cyberinfrastructure- focused NSF-funded graduate data science education workshop hosted at an iSchool in the US. The complexity of the workshop curriculum, the participants' and instructors' disparate disciplinary backgrounds, and the technical tools employed are particularly suited to qualitative meth- ods which can synthesize all of these aspects from rich observational, ethnographic, and trace data collected as part of the authors' role on the grant's qualitative evaluation team. The success of the workshop in equipping participants to do reproducible computational science was in part due to the successful acculturation process, whereby participants comprehended, altered, and enacted new norms amongst themselves. At the same time, we observed potential challenges for data science in- struction resulting from the rhetorical framing of the technologies as inescapably new. This language, which mirrors that of a successful grant proposal, tends to obscure the deeply embedded and contingent history of the command-line technologies required to preform computational sci- ence, many of which are decades old. We conclude by describing our on- going work, future theoretical sampling plans from this and future data, and the contributions that our ndings can provide to graduate data science curriculum development and pedagogy.more » « less

The CSSI 2019 workshop was held on October 28-29, 2019, in Austin, Texas. The main objectives of this workshop were to (1) understand the impact of the CSSI program on the community over the last 9 years, (2) engage workshop participants in identifying gaps and opportunities in the current CSSI landscape, (3) gather ideas on the cyberinfrastructure needs and expectations of the community with respect to the CSSI program, and (4) prepare a report summarizing the feedback gathered from the community that can inform the future solicitations of the CSSI program. The workshop participants included a diverse mix of researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and national laboratories. The participants belonged to diverse domains such as quantum physics, computational biology, High Performance Computing (HPC), and library science. Almost 50% participants were from computer science domain and roughly 50% were from non-computer science domains. As per the self-reported statistics, roughly 27% of the participants were from the different underrepresented groups as defined by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The workshop brought together different stakeholders interested in provisioning sustainable cyberinfrastructure that can power discoveries impacting the various fields of science and technology and maintaining the nation's competitiveness in the areas such as scientific software, HPC, networking, cybersecurity, and data/information science. The workshop served as a venue for gathering the community-feedback on the current state of the CSSI program and its future directions. Before they arrived at the workshop, the participants were encouraged to take an online survey on the challenges that they face in using the current cyberinfrastructure and the importance of the CSSI program in enabling cutting-edge research. The workshop included 16 brain-storming sessions of one hour each. Additionally, the workshop program included 16 lightning talks and an extempore session. The information collected from the survey, brainstorming sessions, lightning talks, and the extempore session are summarized in this report and can potentially be useful for the NSF in formulating the future CSSI solicitations. The workshop fostered an environment in which the participants were encouraged to identify gaps and opportunities in the current cyberinfrastructure landscape, and develop thoughts for proposing new projects.more » « less
