Abstract Dual light-excited ketone/transition-metal catalysis is a rapidly developing field of photochemistry. It allows for versatile functionalizations of C–H or C–X bonds enabled by triplet ketone acting as a hydrogen-atom-abstracting agent, a single-electron acceptor, or a photosensitizer. Abstract Microbes are the drivers of soil phosphorus (P) cycling in terrestrial ecosystems; however, the role of soil microbes in mediating P cycling in P‐rich soils during primary succession remains uncertain. This study examined the impacts of bacterial community structure (diversity and composition) and its functional potential (absolute abundances of P‐cycling functional genes) on soil P cycling along a 130‐year glacial chronosequence on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. Bacterial community structure was a better predictor of soil P fractions than P‐cycling genes along the chronosequence. After glacier retreat, the solubilization of inorganic P and the mineralization of organic P were significantly enhanced by increased bacterial diversity, changed interspecific interactions, and abundant species involved in soil P mineralization, thereby increasing P availability. Although 84% of P‐cycling genes were associated with organic P mineralization, these genes were more closely associated with soil organic carbon than with organic P. Bacterial carbon demand probably determined soil P turnover, indicating the dominant role of organic matter decomposition processes in P‐rich alpine soils. Moreover, the significant decrease in the complexity of the bacterial co‐occurrence network and the taxa‐gene‐P network at the later stage indicates a declining dominance of the bacterial community in driving soil P cycling with succession. Our results reveal that bacteria with a complex community structure have a prominent potential for biogeochemical P cycling in P‐rich soils during the early stages of primary succession.more » « less

Abstract IntroductionIgA nephropathy (IgAN) can cause end‐stage kidney disease (ESKD). This study assesses the impact of induction and maintenance immunosuppression on IgAN recurrence, graft survival, and mortality in living and deceased donor kidney transplants (LDKT and DDKT). MethodsRetrospective analysis of the UNOS database in adults with ESKD secondary to IgAN who received kidney transplants between January 2000 and June 30, 2022. Patients with thymoglobulin (ATG), alemtuzumab, or basiliximab/daclizumab induction with calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) with or without prednisone maintenance were analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify factors correlated with IgA recurrence. Multivariable Cox regression analyses were performed for clinically suspected risk factors. Kaplan Meir Analysis was utilized for overall graft survival. ResultsCompared to ATG with steroid maintenance, alemtuzumab with steroid increased the odds of IgAN recurrence in DDKTs (OR 1.90,p <.010, 95% CI [1.169–3.101]). Alemtuzumab with and without steroid increased the odds of recurrence by 52% (p = .036) and 56% (p = .005), respectively, in LDKTs. ATG without steroids was associated with less risk of IgAN recurrence (HR .665,p = .044, 95% CI [.447–.989]), graft failure (HR .758,p = .002, 95% CI [.633–.907]), and death (HR .619,p <.001, 95% CI [.490–.783]) in DDKTs. Recurrence was strongly associated with risks of graft failure in DDKTs and LDKTs and death in LDKTs. ConclusionIn patients with IgAN requiring a kidney transplant, Alemtuzumab induction correlates with increased IgAN recurrence. Relapse significantly affects graft survival and mortality. ATG without steroids is associated with the least graft loss and mortality.more » « less

Objective:Cognitive training may benefit older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), but the prognostic factors are not well-established. Methods:This study analyzed data from a 78-week trial with 107 participants with MCI, comparing computerized cognitive training (CCT) and computerized crossword puzzle training (CPT). Outcomes were changes in cognitive and functional measures from baseline. Linear mixed-effect models were used to identify prognostic factors for each intervention. Results:Baseline neuropsychological composite z-score was positively associated with cognitive and functional improvements for both interventions in univariable models, retaining significance in the final multivariable model for functional outcome in CPT (P< 0.001). Apolipoprotein E e4 carriers had worse cognitive (P= 0.023) and functional (P= 0.001) outcomes than noncarriers for CPT but not CCT. African Americans showed greater functional improvements than non-African Americans in both CPT (P= 0.001) and CCT (P= 0.010). Better baseline odor identification was correlated with cognitive improvements in CPT (P= 0.006) and functional improvements in CCT (P< 0.001). Conclusion:Baseline cognitive test performance, African American background, and odor identification ability are potential prognostic factors for improved outcomes with cognitive interventions in older adults with MCI. Apolipoprotein E e4 is associated with poor outcomes. Replication of these findings may improve the selection of cognitive interventions for individuals with MCI.more » « less

Abstract National nutrient inventories provide surplus phosphorus (P) estimates derived from county‐scale mass balance calculations using P inputs from manure and fertilizer sales and P outputs from crop yield data. Although bioavailable P and surplus P are often correlated at the field scale, few studies have investigated the relationship between measured soil P concentrations of large‐scale soil testing programs and inventory‐based surplus P estimates. In this study, we assessed the relationship between national surplus P data from the NuGIS dataset and laboratory‐measured soil test phosphorus (STP) at the county scale for Arkansas, North Carolina, and Oklahoma. For optimal periods of surplus P aggregation, surplus P was positively correlated with STP based on both Pearson (Arkansas:r = 0.65, North Carolina:r = 0.45, Oklahoma:r = 0.52) and Spearman correlation coefficients (Arkansas:ρ = 0.57, North Carolina:ρ = 0.28, and Oklahoma:ρ = 0.66). Based on Pearson correlations, the optimal surplus P aggregation periods were 10, 30, and 4 years for AR, NC, and OK, respectively. On average, STP was more strongly correlated with surplus P than with individual P inventory components (fertilizer, manure, and crop removal), except in North Carolina. In Arkansas and North Carolina, manure P was positively correlated with STP, and fertilizer P was negatively correlated with STP. Altogether, results suggest that surplus P moderately correlates with STP concentrations, but aggregation period and location‐specific factors influence the strength of the relationship.more » « less
