The electrical properties of the entropy stabilized oxides: Zr6Nb2O17, Zr6Ta2O17, Hf6Nb2O17and Hf6Ta2O17were characterized. The results and the electrical properties of the products (i.e. ZrO2, HfO2, Nb2O5and Ta2O5) led us to hypothesize the A6B2O17family is a series of mixed ionic-electronic conductors. Conductivity measurements in varying oxygen partial pressure were performed on A6Nb2O17and A6Ta2O17.The results indicate that electrons are involved in conduction in A6Nb2O17while holes play a role in conduction of A6Ta2O17. Between 900 °C–950 °C, the charge transport in the A6B2O17system increases in Ar atmosphere. A combination of DTA/DSC and in situ high temperature X-ray diffraction was performed to identify a potential mechanism for this increase. In-situ high temperature X-ray diffraction in Ar does not show any phase transformation. Based on this, it is hypothesized that a change in the oxygen sub-lattice is the cause for the shift in high temperature conduction above 900 °C–950 °C. This could be:(i)Nb(Ta)4+- oxygen vacancy associate formation/dissociation,(ii)formation of oxygen/oxygen vacancy complexes(iii)ordering/disordering of oxygen vacancies and/or(iv)oxygen-based superstructure commensurate or incommensurate transitions. In-situ high temperature neutron diffraction up to 1050 °C is required to help elucidate the origins of this large increase in conductivity.

Catalytic enantioselective synthesis of 2-pyrazolines via one-pot condensation/6π-electrocyclization: 3,5-bis(pentafluorosulfanyl)-phenylthioureas as powerful hydrogen bond donors
A new conjugate-base-stabilized carboxylic acid containing a 3,5-bis(SF5)phenylthiourea functionality catalyses challenging one-pot condensations/6π-electrocyclizations of hydrazines and α,β-unsaturated ketones.

Abstract The dialkyl malonate derived 1,3‐diphosphines R2C(CH2PPh2)2(R=a, Me;b, Et;c,n‐Bu;d,n‐Dec;e, Bn;f,p‐tolCH2) are combined with (p‐tol3P)2PtCl2ortrans‐(p‐tol3P)2Pt((C≡C)2H)2to give the chelatescis‐(R2C(CH2PPh2)2)PtCl2(2 a–f, 94–69 %) orcis‐(R2C(CH2PPh2)2)Pt((C≡C)2H)2(3 a–f, 97–54 %). Complexes3 a–dare also available from2 a–dand excess 1,3‐butadiyne in the presence of CuI (cat.) and excess HNEt2(87–65 %). Under similar conditions,2and3react to give the title compounds [(R2C(CH2PPh2)2)[Pt(C≡C)2]4(4 a–f; 89–14 % (64 % avg)), from which ammonium salts such as the co‐product [H2NEt2]+Cl−are challenging to remove. Crystal structures of4 a,bshow skew rhombus as opposed to square Pt4geometries. The NMR and IR properties of4 a–fare similar to those of mono‐ or diplatinum model compounds. However, cyclic voltammetry gives only irreversible oxidations. As compared to mono‐platinum or Pt(C≡C)2Pt species, the UV‐visible spectra show much more intense and red‐shifted bands. Time dependent DFT calculations define the transitions and principal orbitals involved. Electrostatic potential surface maps reveal strongly negative Pt4C16cores that likely facilitate ammonium cation binding. Analogous electronic properties of Pt3C12and Pt5C20homologs and selected equilibria are explored computationally.more » « less

Abstract Al(OC(CF3)3)(PhF) reacts with silanols present on partially dehydroxylated silica to form well‐defined ≡SiOAl(OC(CF3)3)2(O(Si≡)2) (1).27Al NMR and DFT calculations with a small cluster model to approximate the silica surface show that the aluminum in1adopts a distorted trigonal bipyramidal coordination geometry by coordinating to a nearby siloxane bridge and a fluorine from the alkoxide. Fluoride ion affinity (FIA) calculations follow experimental trends and show that1is a stronger Lewis acid than B(C6F5)3and Al(OC(CF3)3)(PhF) but is weaker than Al(OC(CF3)3) andiPr3Si+. Cp2Zr(CH3)2reacts with1to form [Cp2ZrCH3][≡SiOAl(OC(CF3)3)2(CH3)] (3) by methide abstraction. This reactivity pattern is similar to reactions of organometallics with the proposed strong Lewis acid sites present on Al2O3.more » « less

Abstract Ultra‐small nanoparticles of CeO2obtained in molecular form, so‐called molecular nanoparticles, have been limited to date to a family whose largest member is of nuclearity Ce40with a {Ce40O58} core atom count. Herein we report that a synthetic procedure has been developed to the cation [Ce100O149(OH)18(O2CPh)60(PhCO2H)12(H2O)20]16+, a member with a much higher Ce100nuclearity and a {Ce100O167} core that is more akin to the smallest ceria nanoparticles. Its crystal structure reveals it to possess a 2.4 nm size and high D2dsymmetry, and it has also allowed identification of core surface features including facet composition, the presence and location of Ce3+and H+(i.e. HO−) ions, and the binding modes of the ligand monolayer of benzoate, benzoic acid, and water ligands.more » « less
