Classroom orchestration requires teachers to concurrently manage multiple activities across multiple social levels (individual, group, and class) and under various constraints. Real-time dashboards can support teachers; however, designing actionable dashboards is a huge challenge. This paper describes a participatory design study to identify and inform critical features of a dashboard for displaying relevant, actionable, real-time data. We leveraged a Sense-Assess-Act framework to present dashboard mockups to teachers for feedback. Although the participating teachers differed in how they would use the presented information (during class or after class as a post hoc analysis tool), two common emerging themes were that they wanted to use the data to a) better support their students and b) to make broader instructional decisions. We present data from our study and propose a customizable, mobile dashboard, that can be adapted to a teacher's specific needs at a specific time, to help them better facilitate learning activities.

Co-Designing MathFlowLens: A Teacher-Focused Tool for Identifying Strategic Thinking in Mathematics
This project is a second-round development iteration of the MathFlowLens Dashboard, a data visualization tool for teachers that helps them identify their students’ strategic thinking and problem solving pathways. Development is guided by a co-design process where teachers were consulted multiple times to provide feedback and usability data that are analyzed and turned into features that meet those needs. Focus groups with middle school mathematics teachers gave insight into the round-one prototype of the dashboard, the data from which was used to synthesize needs into features that address them. This project’s development saw the inclusion of a new data visualization component that allows teachers to see each individual student’s journey through a problem – as well as several other modifications and accessibility features. As an iterative product, future work should include additional focus groups with teachers and studies to evaluate the effectiveness of the tool.

Although there is extensive research on what makes teacher computer science (CS) professional development (PD) effective, little attention has been given to how PD providers prefer to collect and report data. A platform that met the needs of teachers while also simultaneously meeting the needs of funding bodies could be powerful in answering questions about participation and experiences in CS PD. Our research question for this study was: Which features and types of data do teachers find most important to include in a platform designed to record data related to their engagement with PD?We used an exploratory-sequential mixed methods approach that included focus groups and a survey created from an analysis of the data from the focus groups. The three most desired feature included adding information about the subject/topics targeted by the CS PD offerings for the CS PD they took, the grade levels targeted by the CS PD offering, and the number of training hours, points, and/or CEU credits earned or available to be earned by each CS PD offering taken. The three least desired features included have the capability for teachers to take notes about a CS PD, QR codes for signing up for CS PD, and capability to enter data about non-CS PDs you have completed. While we will use this data to inform the development of the platform, this study is significant as states can leverage this knowledge as they create their own systems for creating platforms for teachers within their own states.more » « less

ABSTRACT BackgroundEducational technologies typically provide teachers with analytics regarding student proficiency, but few digital tools provide teachers with process‐based information about students' variable problem‐solving strategies as they solve problems. Utilising design thinking and co‐designing with teachers can provide insight to researchers about what educators need to make instructional decisions based on student problem‐solving data. ObjectivesThis case study presents a collaboration where researchers and teachers co‐designed MathFlowLens, a teacher‐facing dashboard that provides analytics and visualisations about students' diverse problem‐solving strategies and behaviours used when solving online math problems in the classroom. MethodsOver several sessions, teachers discussed, mocked up, and were provided with behavioural data and strategy visualisations from students' math problem‐solving that demonstrated the variability of strategic approaches. Throughout this process, the team documented, transcribed, and used these conversations and artefacts to inform the design and development of the teacher tool. Results and ConclusionsTeachers discussed and designed prototypes of data dashboards and provided the research team with ongoing feedback to inform the iteration of the tool development.more » « less

Mavrikis, M; Lalle, S; Azevedo, R; Biswas, G; Roll, I (Ed.)Exploratory learning environments (ELEs), such as simulation-based platforms and open-ended science curricula, promote hands-on exploration and problem-solving but make it difficult for teachers to gain timely insights into students' conceptual understanding. This paper presents LearnLens, a generative AI (GenAI)-enhanced teacher-facing dashboard designed to support problem-based instruction in middle school science. LearnLens processes students' open-ended responses from digital assessments to provide various insights, including sample responses, word clouds, bar charts, and AI-generated summaries. These features elucidate students' thinking, enabling teachers to adjust their instruction based on emerging patterns of understanding. The dashboard was informed by teacher input during professional development sessions and implemented within a middle school Earth science curriculum. We report insights from teacher interviews that highlight the dashboard's usability and potential to guide teachers' instruction in the classroom.more » « less

As interest in programming as a major grows, instructors must accommodate more students in their programming courses. One particularly challenging aspect of this growth is providing quality assistance to students during in-class and out-of-class programming exercises. Prior work proposes using instructor dashboards to help instructors combat these challenges. Further, the introduction of ChatGPT represents an exciting avenue to assist instructors with programming exercises but needs a delivery method for this assistance. We propose a revision of a current instructor dashboard Assistant Dashboard Plus that extends an existing dashboard with two new features: (a) identifying students in difficulty so that instructors can effectively assist them, and (b) providing instructors with pedagogically relevant groupings of students’ exercise solutions with similar implementations so that instructors can provide overlapping code style feedback to students within the same group. For difficulty detection, it uses a state-of-the-art algorithm for which a visualization has not been created. For code clustering, it uses GPT.
