We provide some evidence for nonzero electron velocity at the tunnel exit in strong-field atomic ionization. Our investigation is based on the analysis of a suitably chosen correlation function which describes correlations between the two observables: the longitudinal electron velocity and the appearance of the photoelectron in the continuum at the end of the laser pulse. The results of the correlation function analysis that we perform are confirmed by the calculations using the quantum orbits method. Published by the American Physical Society2024

Coherent control of multiphoton ionization of lithium atoms by a bichromatic laser field
We demonstrate a left-right asymmetry control of the photoelectron angular distribution in multiphoton ionization of Li atoms by a bichromatic laser field. By delaying the fundamental (780 nm) and its second harmonic relative to each other in steps of 130 attoseconds, we can vary the relative phase between the two laser fields with subwavelength accuracy and thereby steer the ejected electrons. Good agreement is found between the measurements and calculations at the appropriate intensities of the two harmonics. Published by the American Physical Society2024

Hydrodynamic plasma waveguides initiated by optical field ionization have recently become a key component of multi-GeV laser wakefield accelerators. Here, we present the most complete and accurate experimental and simulation-based characterization to date, applicable to current multi-GeV experiments and future 100 GeV-scale laser plasma accelerators. Crucial to the simulations is the correct modeling of intense Bessel beam interaction with meter-scale gas targets, the results of which are used as initial conditions for hydrodynamic simulations. The simulations are in good agreement with our experiments measuring evolving plasma and neutral hydrogen density profiles using two-color short pulse interferometry, enabling realistic determination of the guided mode structure for application to laser-driven plasma accelerator design. We present an expression for the spectral gap, opening up new possibilities for performing and accelerating spectral calculations of quantum many-body systems. We develop and demonstrate one such possibility in the context of tensor network simulations. Our approach requires only minor modifications of the widely used simple update method and is computationally lightweight relative to other approaches. We validate it by computing spectral gaps of the 2D and 3D transverse-field Ising models and find strong agreement with previously reported perturbation theory results. We present momentum resolved covariance measurements of entangled electronic-nuclear wave packets created and probed with octave spanning phaselocked ultrafast pulses. We launch vibrational wave packets on multiple electronic states via multiphoton absorption, and probe these wave packets via strong field double ionization using a second phaselocked pulse. Momentum resolved covariance mapping of the fragment ions highlights the nuclear motion, while measurements of the yield as a function of the relative phase between pump and probe pulses highlight the electronic coherence. The combined measurements allow us to directly visualize the entanglement between the electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom and follow the evolution of the complete wavefunction.
