A<sc>bstract</sc> The production of strange hadrons ($$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ , Λ, Ξ±, and Ω±), baryon-to-meson ratios (Λ/$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ , Ξ/$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ , and Ω/$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ ), and baryon-to-baryon ratios (Ξ/Λ, Ω/Λ, and Ω/Ξ) associated with jets and the underlying event were measured as a function of transverse momentum (pT) in pp collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV and p Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The inclusive production of the same particle species and the corresponding ratios are also reported. The production of multi-strange hadrons, Ξ±and Ω±, and their associated particle ratios in jets and in the underlying event are measured for the first time. In both pp and p–Pb collisions, the baryon-to-meson and baryon-to-baryon yield ratios measured in jets differ from the inclusive particle production for low and intermediate hadronpT(0.6–6 GeV/c). Ratios measured in the underlying event are in turn similar to those measured for inclusive particle production. In pp collisions, the particle production in jets is compared with Pythia8 predictions with three colour-reconnection implementation modes. None of them fully reproduces the data in the measured hadronpTregion. The maximum deviation is observed for Ξ±and Ω±which reaches a factor of about six. The event multiplicity dependence is further investigated in p−Pb collisions. In contrast to what is observed in the underlying event, there is no significant event-multiplicity dependence for particle production in jets. The presented measurements provide novel constraints on hadronisation and its Monte Carlo description. In particular, they demonstrate that the fragmentation of jets alone is insufficient to describe the strange and multi-strange particle production in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.

Measurement of ω meson production in pp collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV
A<sc>bstract</sc> ThepT-differential cross section ofωmeson production in pp collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV at midrapidity (|y| <0.5) was measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC, covering an unprecedented transverse-momentum range of 1.6< pT<50 GeV/c. The meson is reconstructed via theω→π+π−π0decay channel. The results are compared with various theoretical calculations: PYTHIA8.2 with the Monash 2013 tune overestimates the data by up to 50%, whereas good agreement is observed with Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) calculations incorporatingωfragmentation using a broken SU(3) model. Theω/π0ratio is presented and compared with theoretical calculations and the available measurements at lower collision energies. The presented data triples thepTranges of previously available measurements. A constant ratio ofCω/π0= 0.578 ± 0.006 (stat.) ± 0.013 (syst.) is found above a transverse momentum of 4 GeV/c, which is in agreement with previous findings at lower collision energies within the systematic and statistical uncertainties.

Acharya, S; Adamová, D; Agarwal, A; Aglieri_Rinella, G; Aglietta, L; Agnello, M; Agrawal, N; Ahammed, Z; Ahmad, S; Ahn, S U; et al (, Journal of High Energy Physics)A<sc>bstract</sc> The production cross sections of D0, D+, and$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ hadrons originating from beauty-hadron decays (i.e. non-prompt) were measured for the first time at midrapidity in proton–lead (p–Pb) collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV. Nuclear modification factors (RpPb) of non-prompt D0, D+, and$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ are calculated as a function of the transverse momentum (pT) to investigate the modification of the momentum spectra measured in p–Pb collisions with respect to those measured in proton–proton (pp) collisions at the same energy. TheRpPbmeasurements are compatible with unity and with the measurements in the prompt charm sector, and do not show a significantpTdependence. ThepT-integrated cross sections andpT-integratedRpPbof non-prompt D0and D+mesons are also computed by extrapolating the visible cross sections down topT= 0. The non-prompt D-mesonRpPbintegrated overpTis compatible with unity and with model calculations implementing modification of the parton distribution functions of nucleons bound in nuclei with respect to free nucleons. The non-prompt$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ /D0and D+/D0production ratios are computed to investigate hadronisation mechanisms of beauty quarks into mesons and baryons. The measured ratios as a function ofpTdisplay a similar trend to that measured for charm hadrons in the same collision system.more » « less

Acharya, S; Adamová, D; Aglieri_Rinella, G; Agnello, M; Agrawal, N; Ahammed, Z; Ahmad, S; Ahn, S U; Ahuja, I; Akindinov, A; et al (, Journal of High Energy Physics)A<sc>bstract</sc> Measurements of the production cross sections of prompt D0, D+, D*+,$$ {\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+} $$ ,$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ , and$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ charm hadrons at midrapidity in proton-proton collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector are presented. The D-meson cross sections as a function of transverse momentum (pT) are provided with improved precision and granularity. The ratios ofpT-differential meson production cross sections based on this publication and on measurements at different rapidity and collision energy provide a constraint on gluon parton distribution functions at low values of Bjorken-x(10−5–10−4). The measurements of$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ ($$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ ) baryon production extend the measuredpTintervals down topT= 0(3) GeV/c. These measurements are used to determine the charm-quark fragmentation fractions and the$$ \textrm{c}\overline{\textrm{c}} $$ production cross section at midrapidity (|y|<0.5) based on the sum of the cross sections of the weakly-decaying ground-state charm hadrons D0, D+,$$ {\textrm{D}}_{\textrm{s}}^{+} $$ ,$$ {\Lambda}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ ,$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^0 $$ and, for the first time,$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ , and of the strongly-decaying J/ψmesons. The first measurements of$$ {\Xi}_{\textrm{c}}^{+} $$ and$$ {\Sigma}_{\textrm{c}}^{0,++} $$ fragmentation fractions at midrapidity are also reported. A significantly larger fraction of charm quarks hadronising to baryons is found compared to e+e−and ep collisions. The$$ \textrm{c}\overline{\textrm{c}} $$ production cross section at midrapidity is found to be at the upper bound of state-of-the-art perturbative QCD calculations.more » « less

Abdulhamid, M I; Aboona, B E; Adam, J; Adamczyk, L; Adams, J R; Aggarwal, I; Aggarwal, M M; Ahammed, Z; Aschenauer, E C; Aslam, S; et al (, Journal of High Energy Physics)A<sc>bstract</sc> We report multi-differential measurements of strange hadron production ranging from mid- to target-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at a center-of-momentum energy per nucleon pair of$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 3 GeV with the STAR experiment at RHIC.$$ {K}_S^0 $$ meson and Λ hyperon yields are measured via their weak decay channels. Collision centrality and rapidity dependences of the transverse momentum spectra and particle ratios are presented. Particle mass and centrality dependence of the average transverse momenta of Λ and$$ {K}_S^0 $$ are compared with other strange particles, providing evidence of the development of hadronic rescattering in such collisions. The 4πyields of each of these strange hadrons show a consistent centrality dependence. Discussions on radial flow, the strange hadron production mechanism, and properties of the medium created in such collisions are presented together with results from hadronic transport and thermal model calculations.more » « less

Acharya, S; Adamová, D; Aglieri_Rinella, G; Agnello, M; Agrawal, N; Ahammed, Z; Ahmad, S; Ahn, S U; Ahuja, I; Akindinov, A; et al (, Journal of High Energy Physics)A<sc>bstract</sc> The transverse momentum (pT) and centrality dependence of the nuclear modification factorRAAof prompt and non-prompt J/ψ, the latter originating from the weak decays of beauty hadrons, have been measured by the ALICE collaboration in Pb–Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ = 5.02 TeV. The measurements are carried out through the e+e−decay channel at midrapidity (|y| < 0.9) in the transverse momentum region 1.5 <pT< 10 GeV/c. Both prompt and non-prompt J/ψmeasurements indicate a significant suppression forpT> 5 GeV/c, which becomes stronger with increasing collision centrality. The results are consistent with similar LHC measurements in the overlappingpTintervals, and cover the kinematic region down topT= 1.5 GeV/cat midrapidity, not accessible by other LHC experiments. The suppression of prompt J/ψin central and semicentral collisions exhibits a decreasing trend towards lower transverse momentum, described within uncertainties by models implementing J/ψproduction from recombination of c and$$ \overline{\textrm{c}} $$ quarks produced independently in different partonic scatterings. At high transverse momentum, transport models including quarkonium dissociation are able to describe the suppression for prompt J/ψ. For non-prompt J/ψ, the suppression predicted by models including both collisional and radiative processes for the computation of the beauty-quark energy loss inside the quark-gluon plasma is consistent with measurements within uncertainties.more » « less

The meson is reconstructed via theω→π+π−π0decay channel. The results are compared with various theoretical calculations: PYTHIA8.2 with the Monash 2013 tune overestimates the data by up to 50%, whereas good agreement is observed with Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) calculations incorporatingωfragmentation using a broken SU(3) model. Theω/π0ratio is presented and compared with theoretical calculations and the available measurements at lower collision energies. The presented data triples thepTranges of previously available measurements. A constant ratio ofCω/π0= 0.578 ± 0.006 (stat.) ± 0.013 (syst.) is found above a transverse momentum of 4 GeV/c, which is in agreement with previous findings at lower collision energies within the
