Title: Maximizing science communication skills in a primary scientific literature-based cancer biology course: practical implementation methods
ABSTRACT Integrating primary scientific literature into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curricula enhances critical thinking, scientific literacy, and communication skills but presents challenges due to complex terminology and data interpretation barriers. To address these challenges, a scaffolded journal club approach was implemented in a Cancer Biology course. The course utilized Hypothes.is web-based annotations, methods presentations, figure annotations, and structured discussions to promote active engagement with the literature. Additionally, integrated science communication assignments—including written, graphical, and video abstracts—provided diverse opportunities for students to develop scientific literacy. This structured approach is designed to facilitate comprehension, encourage proactive learning, and foster confidence in engaging with primary scientific literature. Student feedback highlighted improved ability to dissect research articles, enhanced presentation skills, and increased enjoyment of scientific reading. The journal club model and science communication assignments offer a replicable framework for enhancing primary scientific literature engagement across various STEM disciplines and educational levels.  more » « less

  1. Socioscientific issues (SSI) are often used to facilitate students’ engagement in multiple scientific practices such as decision-making and argumentation, both of which are goals of STEM literacy, science literacy, and integrated STEM education. Literature often emphasizes scientific argumentation over socioscientific argumentation, which involves considering social factors in addition to scientific frameworks. Analyzing students’ socioscientific arguments may reveal how students construct such arguments and evaluate pedagogical tools supporting these skills. In this study, we examined students’ socioscientific arguments regarding three SSI on pre- and post-assessments in the context of a course emphasizing SSI-based structured decision-making. We employed critical integrative argumentation (CIA) as a theoretical and analytical framework, which integrates arguments and counterarguments with stronger arguments characterized by identifying and refuting counterarguments. We hypothesized that engaging in structured decision-making, in which students integrate multidisciplinary perspectives and consider tradeoffs of various solutions based upon valued criteria, may facilitate students’ development of integrated socioscientific arguments. Findings suggest that students’ arguments vary among SSI contexts and may relate to students’ identities and perspectives regarding the SSI. We conclude that engaging in structured decision-making regarding personally relevant SSI may foster more integrated argumentation skills, which are critical to engaging in information-laden democratic societies.

    ABSTRACT Undergraduate students need the opportunity to engage with primary scientific literature so they can gain a greater understanding of the scientific process and insights into the larger impacts of scientific research in their field. Reading primary scientific literature (PSL) also provides the opportunity for students to consider the application of primary scientific research to help solve socioscientific issues. Helping students consider more inclusive approaches to science communication can facilitate their connections between primary scientific research and collaborative solving of socioscientific issues. The CREATE method by Hoskins et al. is one pre-existing method of reading scientific papers that gives students a structured opportunity to examine papers. The CREATE method gives students the opportunity to practice scientific process skills, reflect on the impact of research, and consider future studies. We have added an additional element to the CREATE method to help students consider other areas of expertise and ways of knowing needed to apply science in the article to solve socioscientific issues, helping them take a more inclusive approach to reading the PSL. We have deemed this activity ‘inclusive-CREATE’ or iCREATE. Here, we present a curricular plan for implementing iCREATE and show evidence of its efficacy. For instance, we show that the iCREATE method increases students’ science and science communication identity and self-efficacy. We also show that iCREATE increases students’ inclusive science communication self-efficacy, intents, and planned behaviors. Overall, adding a more inclusive element to the CREATE method will help students feel more confident, more like a scientist, and more likely to engage in inclusive science communication behaviors.

  3. The American Psychological Association Guidelines for the Psychology Major emphasize the development of scientific inquiry and critical thinking skills. We present findings from a department-wide effort to promote statistical literacy in introductory psychology at a nonselective public college. We examined course outcomes across 10 course sections taught in person or online with varying enrollments (total N = 485 students). Instructors administered online assignments about psychological research via Qualtrics, featuring statistics exercises and Excel worksheet activities. As a low-stakes introduction to statistical reasoning, instructors graded work based on completion rather than accuracy. Students completed the majority of Qualtrics assignments and about half of the Excel worksheets. As potential factors related to student outcomes, we considered external factors, internal factors, and student skills, and included demographic factors as control variables. Students with greater work obligations and those who completed work on smartphones or tablets (external factors) completed fewer assignments than their peers. Students with higher self-efficacy and greater anxiety about statistics (internal factors) completed more Qualtrics assignments, and those with higher statistics knowledge and reading comprehension (student skills) completed more Excel worksheets. Course section characteristics (modality, enrollment) were unrelated to student outcomes. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using low-stakes assignments to promote statistical literacy while emphasizing psychology as an empirical science. Future studies should assess learning gains associated with the curriculum and identify specific pedagogical features (e.g., feedback, active learning) that increase student engagement.

Societal Impact StatementThe practice of writing science blogs benefits both the scientist and society alike by providing professional development opportunities and delivering information in a format that is accessible to large and diverse audiences. By designing a project that introduced upper‐level undergraduate students to science blog writing with a focus on plant biology, we piqued students' interest in science writing and the content of a popular plant science blog website. If adopted more widely, this work could broaden the scope of science education and promote the development of effective science communication skills for the next generation of scientists. SummarySuccessful scientists must communicate their research to broad audiences, including distilling key scientific concepts for the general public. Students pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields benefit from developing public communication skills early in their careers, but opportunities are limited in traditional biology curricula.We created the “Plant Science Blogging Project” for a Plant Biology undergraduate course at the University of Pittsburgh in Fall 2018 and 2019. Students wrote blog posts merging personal connections with plants with plant biology concepts for the popular science blogsPlant Love StoriesandEvoBites. By weaving biology into their narratives, students learned how to share botanical knowledge with the general public.The project had positive impacts on student learning and public engagement. In post‐assignment surveys, the majority of students reported that they enjoyed the assignment, felt it improved their understanding of plant biology, and piqued their interest in reading and writing science blogs in the future. Approximately one‐third of the student‐authored blogs were published, including two that rose to the top 10 most‐read posts on Plant Love Stories. Some dominant themes in student blogs, including medicine and culture, differed from common story themes published on the web, indicating the potential for students to diversify science blog content.Overall, the Plant Science Blogging Project allows undergraduate students to engage with plant biology topics in a new way, sharpen their scientific communication skills in accordance with today's world of mass information sharing, and contribute to the spread of scientific knowledge for public benefit.

When implemented effectively, Place-Based Experiential Learning (PBEL) pedagogies have been shown through different studies to enhance student content knowledge, course engagement, critical thinking skills, and civic-mindedness. This research followed 10 semester long university courses, during one academic year, implementing PBEL pedagogies with a focus on urban farming. Courses came from a wide array of disciplines including courses focused on science, technology, engineering, or mathematics as well as many non-STEM courses. Students completed pre- and post-assessments to measure change in civic-mindedness, place attachment, situated sustainability meaning-making, and environmental scientific literacy. Statistically significant positive change with small to moderate effect sizes were found in student’s environmental scientific literacy, situated sustainability meaning-making, place attachment, and civic-mindedness.
