Title: Constraints on f(R) gravity from thermal-Sunyaev-Zel’dovich-effect-selected SPT galaxy clusters and weak lensing mass calibration from DES and HST
We present constraints on the f ( R ) gravity model using a sample of 1005 galaxy clusters in the redshift range 0.25–1.78 that have been selected through the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect from South Pole Telescope data and subjected to optical and near-infrared confirmation with the multicomponent matched filter algorithm. We employ weak gravitational lensing mass calibration from the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 data for 688 clusters at z < 0.95 and from the Hubble Space Telescope for 39 clusters with 0.6 < z < 1.7 . Our cluster sample is a powerful probe of f ( R ) gravity, because this model predicts a scale-dependent enhancement in the growth of structure, which impacts the halo mass function (HMF) at cluster mass scales. To account for these modified gravity effects on the HMF, our analysis employs a semianalytical approach calibrated with numerical simulations. Combining calibrated cluster counts with primary cosmic microwave background temperature and polarization anisotropy measurements from the Planck 2018 release, we derive robust constraints on the f ( R ) parameter f R 0 . Our results, log 10 | f R 0 | < 5.32 at the 95% credible level, are the tightest current constraints on f ( R ) gravity from cosmological scales. This upper limit rules out f ( R ) -like deviations from general relativity that result in more than a 20 % enhancement of the cluster population on mass scales M 200 c > 3 × 10 14 M . 1. We measure the tau-to-light-lepton ratio of inclusive B -meson branching fractions R ( X τ / ) B ( B X τ ν ) / B ( B X ν ) , where indicates an electron or muon, and thereby test the universality of charged-current weak interactions. We select events that have one fully reconstructed B meson and a charged lepton candidate from 189 fb 1 of electron-positron collision data collected with the Belle II detector. We find R ( X τ / ) = 0.228 ± 0.016 ( stat ) ± 0.036 ( syst ) , in agreement with standard-model expectations. This is the first direct measurement of R ( X τ / ) . 2. The production of the ψ ( 2 S ) charmonium state was measured with ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV , in the dimuon decay channel. A significant signal was observed for the first time at LHC energies down to zero transverse momentum, at forward rapidity ( 2.5 < y < 4 ). The measurement of the ratio of the inclusive production cross sections of the ψ ( 2 S ) and J / ψ resonances is reported as a function of the centrality of the collisions and of transverse momentum, in the region p T < 12 GeV / c . The results are compared with the corresponding measurements in p p collisions, by forming the double ratio [ σ ψ ( 2 S ) / σ J / ψ ] Pb Pb / [ σ ψ ( 2 S ) / σ J / ψ ] p p . It is found that in Pb-Pb collisions the ψ ( 2 S ) is suppressed by a factor of 2 with respect to the J / ψ . The ψ ( 2 S ) nuclear modification factor R AA was also obtained as a function of both centrality and p T . The results show that the ψ ( 2 S ) resonance yield is strongly suppressed in Pb-Pb collisions, by a factor of up to 3 with respect to p p . Comparisons of cross section ratios with previous Super Proton Synchrotron findings by the NA50 experiment and of R AA with higher- p T results at LHC energy are also reported. These results and the corresponding comparisons with calculations of transport and statistical models address questions on the presence and properties of charmonium states in the quark-gluon plasma formed in nuclear collisions at the LHC. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN

  3. We search for excited charmed baryons in the Λ c + η system using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 980 fb 1 . The data were collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e asymmetric-energy collider. No significant signals are found in the Λ c + η mass spectrum, including the known Λ c ( 2880 ) + and Λ c ( 2940 ) + . Clear Λ c ( 2880 ) + and Λ c ( 2940 ) + signals are observed in the p D 0 mass spectrum. We set upper limits at 90% credibility level on ratios of branching fractions of Λ c ( 2880 ) + and Λ c ( 2940 ) + decaying to Λ c + η relative to Σ c ( 2455 ) π of < 0.13 for the Λ c ( 2880 ) + and < 1.11 for the Λ c ( 2940 ) + . We measure ratios of branching fractions of Λ c ( 2880 ) + and Λ c ( 2940 ) + decaying to p D 0 relative to Σ c ( 2455 ) π of 0.75 ± 0.03 ( stat ) ± 0.07 ( syst ) for the Λ c ( 2880 ) + and 3.59 ± 0.21 ( stat ) ± 0.56 ( syst ) for the Λ c ( 2940 ) + . 4. We report the first evidence for the h b ( 2 P ) ϒ ( 1 S ) η transition with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations. The decay branching fraction is measured to be B [ h b ( 2 P ) ϒ ( 1 S ) η ] = ( 7.1 3.2 + 3.7 ± 0.8 ) × 10 3 , which is noticeably smaller than expected. We also set upper limits on π 0 transitions of B [ h b ( 2 P ) ϒ ( 1 S ) π 0 ] < 1.8 × 10 3 , and B [ h b ( 1 P ) ϒ ( 1 S ) π 0 ] < 1.8 × 10 3 , at the 90% confidence level. These results are obtained with a 131.4 fb 1 data sample collected near the ϒ ( 5 S ) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e collider. 5. In the bottomonium sector, the hindered magnetic dipole transitions between P-wave states h b ( 2 P ) χ b J ( 1 P ) γ , J = 0 , 1, 2, are expected to be severely suppressed according to the relativized quark model, due to the spin flip of the b quark. Nevertheless, a recent model following the coupled-channel approach predicts the corresponding branching fractions to be enhanced by orders of magnitude. In this Letter, we report the first search for such transitions. We find no significant signals and set upper limits at 90% confidence level on the corresponding branching fractions: B [ h b ( 2 P ) γ χ b 0 ( 1 P ) ] < 2.7 × 10 1 , B [ h b ( 2 P ) γ χ b 1 ( 1 P ) ] < 5.4 × 10 3 and B [ h b ( 2 P ) γ χ b 2 ( 1 P ) ] < 1.3 × 10 2 . These values help to constrain the parameters of the coupled-channel models. The results are obtained using a 121.4 fb 1 data sample taken around s = 10.860 GeV with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e collider.
