Title: DISTRICT LEADERS IN SUPPORT OF COACHES EXAMINING DISTRICT MATHEMATICS LEADERS’ SUPPORT FOR SCHOOL-BASED MATHEMATICS COACHES
Mathematics coaching differs significantly from mathematics teaching, and many coaches transi- tion to the role directly from teaching with limited opportunities to learn to work effectively with teachers. Although coach professional develop- ment can provide one source of support for coach- es’ learning, coaches might also benefit from close work with other accomplished facilitators of teach- ers’ learning, such as district mathematics leaders. This study analyzed interviews with 15 district mathematics leaders to understand whether and how they supported school-based mathematics coaches. We found 13 of 15 leaders worked closely with coaches to support them, and we identified seven ways they did so (e.g., classroom visits with coaches).     This poster focuses on the experiences of TA Coaches in a comprehensive graduate teaching assistant training program in mathematical sciences that was designed and refined at one institution and is being replicated at two peer institutions. During program development, TA coaches were tasked with working with GTAs teaching recitation sections of college algebra and calculus I to facilitate active learning pedagogy and were asked to free-form journal about their experience. At the two institutions replicating the program, the duties changed to support the structure and needs of each department. Recent TA coaches at the three institutions participated in interviews about their experiences. This poster summarizes the roles of the TA Coaches across the three universities and explores their perceptions of the unique benefits that the TA coach role provides to the GTAs they assist and their own instructional experiences.

    Regular physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and improved mental well-being. Yet, more than half of the US population is insufficiently active. Health coaching has been successful in promoting healthy behaviors. In this paper, we present our work towards assisting health coaches by extracting the physical activity goal the user and coach negotiate via text messages. We show that information captured by dialogue acts can help to improve the goal extraction results. We employ both traditional and transformer-based machine learning models for dialogue acts prediction and find them statistically indistinguishable in performance on our health coaching dataset. Moreover, we discuss the feedback provided by the health coaches when evaluating the correctness of the extracted goal summaries. This work is a step towards building a virtual assistant health coach to promote a healthy lifestyle.

As school districts implement initiatives that bring computer science (CS) to academically diverse K-12 schools, they face heightened demands for supporting teachers in meeting the needs of a broad range of learners. However, limited knowledge exists about pedagogical approaches to teaching CS, especially to students with disabilities. This paper reports findings from a qualitative study of two CS instructional coaching models meant to support teachers in meeting the needs of diverse learners, including those with disabilities. One model involved a school-embedded coach and the other model involved a district-wide coach that traveled among multiple schools. Findings revealed that within both coaching models, co-planning and co-teaching played an integral role in supporting teachers in meeting the needs of students with disabilities. Instructional pedagogies that coaches promoted included scaffolded project planning, student collaboration, and immediate feedback to students. Within both coaching models, there was a focus on trust building and increasing teachers’ instructional skills. Differences between coaching models included a stronger level of familiarity between the coach and teachers in the school-embedded coaching. There were also different approaches to accountability and co-planning logistics.
