Title: Bridging the Gap: Mentorship and Career Support for Neurodivergent STEM Scholars
The increasing recognition of neurodiversity (ND) within science, technology, engineeringand mathematics (STEM) fields has led to a growing demand for inclusive educationalpractices that support neurodivergent scholars. This paper explores the impact ofmentorship, career counseling, and the use of strengths-based assessments, such as theBirkman® assessment, on the career readiness of neurodivergent students at LandmarkCollege’s S-STEM program. Using social cognitive career theory (SCCT) as a framework,we analyze longitudinal data from program participants, highlighting an increase ininternship participation and career confidence. Interviews with recent graduates reveal keychallenges in the post-graduation transition period, the role of professional networks, andthe importance of near-peer mentoring in career persistence. The study underscores thecritical need for structured post-graduate support and proposes a near-peer mentorshipmodel to facilitate career integration for neurodivergent STEM graduates. Findingscontribute to the growing literature on ND inclusion in STEM and offer actionable insightsfor higher education institutions.  more » « less

  1. Despite interest and potential in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), neurodivergent (ND) individuals face underrepresentation and marginalization. These individuals experience low rates of degree completion and even higher dropout rates from STEM programs. In the workplace, elevated levels of unemployment among individuals with disabilities underscore the need to address obstacles to persistence in STEM programs and pathways to the workforce. The AIE-STEMPLOS (Access to Innovative Education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics-Providing Learning Opportunities and Scholarship) program at Landmark College, launched in 2021, aims to empower ND STEM scholars by leveraging effective mentoring strategies to support degree completion and career development in STEM fields. Supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) through scholarship funding (S-STEM), the program's primary goals are to support domestic low-income, academically talented ND scholars in Computer Science and Life Science, create a robust culture of mentorship within the STEM department, and strengthen scholarly professional development. We generally refer to students as scholars in this program as that is the language preferred by the NSF. The mentoring component is designed to enhance psychosocial and professional development through faculty, group, and peer mentoring. Employing tools like the Birkman Method, mentor maps and Individual Development Plans (IDP), the program fosters self-understanding and community among scholars. Evaluation methods include qualitative and quantitative assessments, with data showing high satisfaction with mentor-mentee relationships, robust engagement in professional development activities, and significant improvements in scholars' professional outlook and STEM identity. This comprehensive approach integrates faculty mentors, career counselors, and weekly cohort meetings for mentoring and professional development activities. This paper will highlight the faculty and group/ peer mentoring components of the program, demonstrating how inclusive educational strategies can promote diversity within STEM fields.

Despite the adaptive strengths and unique problem-solving skills demonstrated by neurodivergent (ND) individuals, they remain underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. High unemployment rates among individuals with disabilities emphasize the need for addressing barriers to entry and persistence in the workforce. This study introduces a program designed to enhance opportunities for neurodivergent STEM scholars with financial needs, supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The program involves: 1) a weekly cohort course to engage in professional development, 2) use of the Birkman Method® survey to help scholars identify and communicate strengths, fostering self-awareness and growth, and 3) one-on-one mentoring with STEM faculty and career counselors to assist students in identifying and pursuing internship opportunities and developing career paths. This paper, co-written by cohort scholars, highlights the program’s successes, to date, in facilitating internships for neurodivergent students, addressing challenges associated with executive function, and providing ongoing support through cohort activities and mentorship. Overall, the program seeks to bridge the gap between neurodivergent scholars and STEM opportunities.

In a 1‐credit evolving STEM Community and Identity course, low‐income and neurodivergent students participate in cohort activities to build community and develop their professional STEM portfolios. The strengths‐based Birkman Method personality survey is used to enhance STEM identity and clarify communication and work styles. This course involves collaboration between STEM faculty, education faculty, and career counselors. Many neurodivergent students entering college lack confidence and struggle to identify and communicate their strengths, which can affect their academic performance and professional growth. This study documents the benefits of using a common language, based on the Birkman Method, for students, mentors, and career counselors. The language is integrated into the course, mentoring sessions, and students' professional portfolios. As a result, students feel a stronger sense of belonging within their cohort and build more meaningful connections with mentors and career counselors. The Birkman Method also helps neurodivergent students take a more informed approach to job searching, improving their morale, mental health, and employment retention. This paper outlines activities designed to foster a community of scientific thinkers and support professional development at all academic levels of postsecondary education.

  4. This work-in-progress research paper describes the prevalence of neurodivergent students (ND) in engineering across two institutions. There is growing awareness that engineering students who are neurodivergent bring unique assets and face challenges to their higher education experience. Neurodivergent students may also face additional challenges associated with chronic illness or being marginalized due to their gender or race/ethnicity. This paper provides background on these issues, followed by demographic data from two institutions. The goal of the paper is to raise the awareness of engineering faculty that the variety of differences and medical conditions among engineering students may be more diverse and/or prevalent than many realize. Students may not disclose these conditions or receive formal accommodations but can be successful. With a notable percentage of engineering students identifying as ND, faculty should ensure these students feel supported. Higher education institutions should also prioritize systematic planning and programming to support the retention and success of these neurodivergent students.

  5. BackgroundDespite efforts to increase the participation of marginalized students, neurodivergent students remain underrepresented in graduate STEM programs. Prior research shows that these students often experience challenges related to key aspects of writing. The objective of this qualitative study is to deepen understanding of the writing experiences, strengths, and challenges of neurodivergent students pursuing graduate degrees in STEM fields. In this analysis, we consider the factors that influence the writing-specific challenges faced by neurodivergent students in graduate STEM programs. This work also explores how neurodivergent students leverage strengths and strategies for success in graduate-level writing tasks. ResultsThis qualitative study draws on Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) to consider the ways cognitive, behavioral, and environmental factors impact writing experiences. We used thematic analysis of the transcripts from 13 focus groups and 1 interview to examine the writing experiences of 31 students who identify as neurodivergent in graduate STEM programs. The findings suggest that many writing challenges faced by neurodivergent graduate students are behaviors and beliefs that emerge in response to environmental factors such as the culture of STEM fields, prior experiences with writing assignments, anxiety driven by intensive feedback cycles, and perceived and experienced stigma. Study participants employed a range of collaborative and situational strategies to support and enhance their writing productivity. ConclusionThese findings may provide insight for current and future neurodivergent graduate students as they adjust to the intense writing demands of graduate degree programs and for graduate program administrators and faculty advisors as they consider new ways to support the academic success of neurodivergent graduate students.
