Learned traits are thought to be subject to different evolutionary dynamics than other phenotypes, but their evolutionary tempo and mode has received little attention. Learned bird song has been thought to be subject to rapid and constant evolution. However, we know little about the evolutionary modes of learned song divergence over long timescales. Here, we provide evidence that aspects of the territorial songs of Eastern Afromontane sky island sunbirds Cinnyris evolve in a punctuated fashion, with periods of stasis of the order of hundreds of thousands of years or more, broken up by evolutionary pulses. Stasis in learned songs is inconsistent with learned traits being subject to constant or frequent change, as would be expected if selection does not constrain song phenotypes over evolutionary timescales. Learned song may instead follow a process resembling peak shifts on adaptive landscapes. While much research has focused on the potential for rapid evolution in bird song, our results suggest that selection can tightly constrain the evolution of learned songs over long timescales. More broadly, these results demonstrate that some aspects of highly variable, plastic traits can exhibit punctuated evolution, with stasis over long time periods.

Punctuated equilibria from 2008 to 2023: continued validation, expanded analytical approaches, plus some drift on defining stasis
Abstract Over the interval 2008–2023 a large number of studies have been published testing various aspects of punctuated equilibria, including the prevalence of stasis, and also the extent to which most evolutionary change is concentrated at cladogenesis. In the vast majority of studies, punctuated equilibria continued to be strongly validated, as widespread evidence for stasis accumulated, with only some rare incidences of gradual change found. Support for the importance of cladogenetic change has increased, and new analytical approaches to study punctuated equilibria have been developed. Over this time period, there has also been an increase in the number of studies that have concentrated on extant taxa to test for punctuated equilibria, and these have also corroborated its widespread presence. In this respect, punctuated equilibria has served as an important bridge between neontological and paleontological approaches to evolutionary biology. From 2008 to 2023, there has also been some drift in how stasis is defined, such that, in certain studies, the definition diverged from the original 1972 definition in important respects. Notably, it is the few studies that have most changed the definition of what stasis constitutes that have most challenged the validity of punctuated equilibria, indicating it is morphing interpretations and definitions rather than the discovery of data compatible with phyletic gradualism that are most responsible for divergent results.

null (Ed.)A mathematical analysis of the evolution of a large population under the weak-mutation limit shows that such a population would spend most of the time in stasis in the vicinity of saddle points on the fitness landscape. The periods of stasis are punctuated by fast transitions, in ln N e /s time ( N e , effective population size; s , selection coefficient of a mutation), when a new beneficial mutation is fixed in the evolving population, which accordingly moves to a different saddle, or on much rarer occasions from a saddle to a local peak. Phenomenologically, this mode of evolution of a large population resembles punctuated equilibrium (PE) whereby phenotypic changes occur in rapid bursts that are separated by much longer intervals of stasis during which mutations accumulate but the phenotype does not change substantially. Theoretically, PE has been linked to self-organized criticality (SOC), a model in which the size of “avalanches” in an evolving system is power-law-distributed, resulting in increasing rarity of major events. Here we show, however, that a PE-like evolutionary regime is the default for a very simple model of an evolving population that does not rely on SOC or any other special conditions.more » « less

Abstract Most species exhibit morphological stasis following speciation, and this is a key feature of the concept of punctuated equilibria. Stasis results in species often having long durations on geological timescales. Durational data are fundamental to many types of paleobiological analyses and are ideally based on occurrence data represented by specimens in museum collections. Often, however, durational data are presented without supporting information about voucher specimens that document stratigraphic ranges, including first and last appearances. We use the iconic Devonian trilobiteEldredgeops ranato demonstrate that durational data can be challenging to determine at multiple taxonomic levels. Further, we show that different datasets—including Sepkoski’s published databases, the Paleobiology Database, and iDigBio—give discordant results concerning first and last occurrences. We argue that paleontologists should adopt two general best practices to help address these problems. First, systematists should clearly identify voucher specimens that represent stratigraphic occurrences of species. Second, we recommend that high-quality photographs of occurrence vouchers be placed in open access websites and be assigned public domain licensing before being paywalled by journals. Such voucher images also have a role to play in training artificial intelligence (AI) systems that will be applied to future paleobiological questions.more » « less

Theories in political science are most commonly tested through comparisons of means via difference tests or regression, but some theoretical frameworks offer implications regarding other distributional features. I consider the literature on models of policy change, and their implications for the thickness of the tails in the distribution of policy change. Change in public policy output is commonly characterized by periods of stasis that are punctuated by dramatic change—a heavy-tailed distribution of policy change. Heavy-tailed policy change is used to differentiate between the incrementalism and punctuated equilibrium models of policy change. The evidentiary value of heavy-tailed outputs rests on the assumption that changes in inputs are normally distributed. I show that, in order for conventional assumptions to imply normally distributed inputs, variance in the within-time distribution of inputs must be assumed to be constant over time. I present this result, and then present an empirical example of a possible aggregate policy input—a major public opinion survey item—that exhibits over-time variation in within-time variance. I conclude that the results I present should serve as motivation for those interested in testing the implications of punctuated equilibrium theory to adopt more flexible assumptions regarding, and endeavor to measure, policy inputs.more » « less

It has been proposed that climate adaptation research can benefit from an evolutionary approach. But related empirical research is lacking. We advance the evolutionary study of climate adaptation with two case studies from contemporary United States agriculture. First, we define ‘cultural adaptation to climate change’ as a mechanistic process of population-level cultural change. We argue this definition enables rigorous comparisons, yields testable hypotheses from mathematical theory and distinguishes adaptive change, non-adaptive change and desirable policy outcomes. Next, we develop an operational approach to identify ‘cultural adaptation to climate change’ based on established empirical criteria. We apply this approach to data on crop choices and the use of cover crops between 2008 and 2021 from the United States. We find evidence that crop choices are adapting to local trends in two separate climate variables in some regions of the USA. But evidence suggests that cover cropping may be adapting more to the economic environment than climatic conditions. Further research is needed to characterize the process of cultural adaptation, particularly the routes and mechanisms of cultural transmission. Furthermore, climate adaptation policy could benefit from research on factors that differentiate regions exhibiting adaptive trends in crop choice from those that do not.
