Abstract Sex estimation is a critical component of the biological profile, and forensic anthropologists may use a variety of sex estimation methods depending upon the degree of completeness and state of preservation of the skeletal remains being analyzed. The innominate is widely accepted to be the most sexually dimorphic skeletal element. TheDiagnose Sexuelle Probabiliste(DSP) method, which uses 10 measurements of the innominate, was introduced in 2005 and updated as DSP2 in 2017. While DSP2 has been reported to have high classification accuracy rates in studies of South American and European populations, the method has not been widely tested in US samples, and few US practitioners incorporate this method into their casework. The goal of this study was to test the reliability and accuracy of DSP2 using a large, modern sample from the US (n = 174). Two observers, blinded from demographic information associated with each specimen, collected the DSP2 metrics. Intra‐ and interobserver error analyses showed acceptable levels of agreement for all measurements, except for IIMT. Classification accuracies exceeded 95%, with minimal sex bias, for both observers and using various measurement combinations; however, an inclusivity sex bias occurred with more males reaching the 0.95 posterior probability threshold required by DSP2 to provide a sex classification estimate. Based on its high accuracy, forensic anthropologists in the US may consider incorporating DSP2 into their casework, although we recommend excluding IIMT and using SPU with caution. Additional methods will continue to be needed when the posterior probability threshold is not reached.

Reevaluating skeletal sex estimation practices in forensic anthropology
Abstract Understanding practitioner preferences in method selection and reporting for skeletal sex estimation is a necessary step toward the standardization of biological profile estimation within forensic anthropological practice in the United States. To better understand the current state of skeletal sex estimation, an electronic survey was sent via omnichannel distribution methods, targeted to individuals practicing skeletal sex estimation in forensic anthropology. One hundred eighteen individuals responded, answering questions about their educational and training background, case experience, practices, and preferences for skeletal sex estimation, and preferences for future method development. Most respondents use both qualitative and quantitative approaches to estimate skeletal sex (99.0%) and employ multiple methods for casework. The pelvis was preferred for morphological approaches, and the Fordisc program [2005, FORDISC 3: Personal computer forensic discriminate functions] was preferred for metric approaches to skeletal sex estimation. Respondents placed emphasis on the validity and reliability of specific methods, their experience and comfort level with applying specific methods, and utilizing methods that did not require expensive equipment. There was considerable variation in how the final sex estimate was determined and reported, with most either giving preference to the pelvis (36.1%) or reporting all methods but basing the final estimation on experience (39.2%). These results were largely similar to the results from a similar survey conducted in 2012, including a preference for using the pelvis for morphological sex estimation; however, the introduction and adoption of new sex estimation methods since 2012 have changed the landscape of practitioner preferences.

Abstract Sex estimation of skeletons is fundamental to many archaeological studies. Currently, three approaches are available to estimate sex–osteology, genomics, or proteomics, but little is known about the relative reliability of these methods in applied settings. We present matching osteological, shotgun-genomic, and proteomic data to estimate the sex of 55 individuals, each with an independent radiocarbon date between 2,440 and 100 cal BP, from two ancestral Ohlone sites in Central California. Sex estimation was possible in 100% of this burial sample using proteomics, in 91% using genomics, and in 51% using osteology. Agreement between the methods was high, however conflicts did occur. Genomic sex estimates were 100% consistent with proteomic and osteological estimates when DNA reads were above 100,000 total sequences. However, more than half the samples had DNA read numbers below this threshold, producing high rates of conflict with osteological and proteomic data where nine out of twenty conditional DNA sex estimates conflicted with proteomics. While the DNA signal decreased by an order of magnitude in the older burial samples, there was no decrease in proteomic signal. We conclude that proteomics provides an important complement to osteological and shotgun-genomic sex estimation.more » « less

Background: The implementation of telemedicine by healthcare providers was accelerated by the COVID‐19 pandemic and in most health systems has reached a lower but steady percentage of total visits. As health systems navigate the integration of telemedicine modalities into care delivery models, understanding the way each discipline can optimally utilize this technology has become increasingly important. The purpose of this study was to determine how specialists who perform surgical procedures as part of their practice want to implement telemedicine into their practice and when they believe it can be most effectively used within their work schedule. Methods: A survey regarding opinions about the use of telemedicine in the postoperative period was conducted in late 2019 prior to the onset of the COVID‐19 pandemic and re‐administered about one year later. The respondents were identified by department and division as physicians who perform at least some surgical procedures. All respondents practice as part of a single urban, academic, multispecialty group across the DC‐Maryland‐Virginia area. These healthcare professionals were asked about their experiences in telemedicine, willingness to incorporate telemedicine into their practice for post‐operative visits during their global surgical period, and their opinions on how accepting patients in general may be of telemedicine. The follow‐up survey provided an opportunity to examine how opinions evolved after having obligatory telehealth experience during the pandemic. Survey responses were analyzed and descriptive statistics are presented in this study. Results: A total of 77 unique respondents participated in the surveys, and we evaluated the responses of the 75 participants who had any telemedicine (TM) experience. Respondents were 74.7% male, 66.7% were aged 36‐55, and 46% had between 1‐10 years of practice experience while the rest reported >11 years of experience. Additionally, specialties included traditional surgical specialties, interventional radiology, ophthalmology, and dermatology. Of those who completed the second survey, 77.1% expressed that the COVID‐19 exposure to TM increased their interest in video TM follow‐ups for post‐operative visits. Respondents further believed that 93.6% of patients in general also express a similar sentiment. However, just 46.7% believe TM would increase their productivity even if the technological infrastructure was perfect. When asked about preferences for when they would perform TM visits, 40.0% said they would want to conduct them as a part of regular hours and 41.3% said they would want these visits during a dedicated time within working hours. If given the chance to offer TM outside regular hours or during the weekend, the majority of respondents was against it or unsure, 77.4% and 88.0%, respectively. Discussion: Although a majority of the respondents surveyed think patients are interested in telemedicine and are themselves interested in using telemedicine follow‐ups in the post‐surgical period, less than half believe that telemedicine would increase productivity. Also, there is great variability in preference for dedicated timeblocks for telemedicine versus integration into traditional clinic schedules. As health systems continue to iterate on optimal models to integrate telehealth into efficient care delivery, it is important to better understand how physicians performing surgical procedures consider the value proposition of telemedicine for post operative care. Further study is required to understand the barriers to utilizing telehealth and how its implementation could impact reimbursement, work hours, the future of work as well as patient access, patient convenience, and patient satisfaction.more » « less

As a core component of casework, methods for estimating the biological profile must meet current legal standards to be admissible as part of a forensic anthropologist’s expert witness testimony. Since the 1993 US Supreme Court Daubert decision, forensic anthropologists have voiced concern that methods relying on subjective or qualitative data might now be at risk of judicial exclusion. This research used a bibliometric approach to assess whether current forensic anthropology research has shifted toward the use of more objective and/or quantitative data. Forensic anthropology articles published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences between 1972 and 2020 were reviewed (n = 1,142), with data collected on each article’s topic, use of different data types, and inclusion of observer error studies. A subset of articles focusing on methods for estimating the four main parameters of the biological profile (age, sex, ancestry/population affinity, stature) was analyzed using chi-square tests for trend in proportions. Age and sex estimation articles showed a significant shift toward more quantitative data (p < 0.001), although no biological profile subtopic showed a significant shift toward more objective data. While this may seem to be a surprising result, a deeper review of current legal standards and standards of practice suggests that Daubert does not require significant changes to how forensic anthropologists approach research design and method development. So long as the principles of good science are followed, the continued reliance on qualitative data should not be a concern from the standpoint of evidentiary admissibility.more » « less

null (Ed.)Age-at-death estimation constitutes one of the key parameters for identification of human remains in forensic investigations. However, for applications in forensic anthropology, many current methods are not sufficiently accurate for adult individuals, leading to chronological age estimates erring by ±10 years. Based on recent trends in aging studies, DNA methylation has great potential as a solution to this problem. However, there are only a few studies that have been published utilizing DNA methylation to determine age from human remains. The aim of the present study was to expand the range of this work by analyzing DNA methylation in dental pulp from adult individuals. Healthy erupted third molars were extracted from individuals aged 22–70. DNA from pulp was isolated and bisulfite converted. Pyrosequencing was the chosen technique to assess DNA methylation. As noted in previous studies, we found that ELOVL2 and FHL2 CpGs played a role in age estimation. In addition, three new markers were evaluated—NPTX2, KLF14, and SCGN. A set of CpGs from these five loci was used in four different multivariate regression models, providing a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) between predicted and chronological age of 1.5–2.13 years. The findings from this research can improve age estimation, increasing the accuracy of identification in forensic anthropology.more » « less
