Title: Intermittency and Lower Dimensional Dissipation in Incompressible Fluids
Abstract In the context of incompressible fluids, the observation that turbulent singular structures fail to be space filling is known as “intermittency”, and it has strong experimental foundations. Consequently, as first pointed out by Landau, real turbulent flows do not satisfy the central assumptions of homogeneity and self-similarity in the K41 theory, and the K41 prediction of structure function exponents$$\zeta _p={p}/{3}$$ ζ p = p / 3 might be inaccurate. In this work we prove that, in the inviscid case, energy dissipation that is lower-dimensional in an appropriate sense implies deviations from the K41 prediction in everyp-th order structure function for$$p>3$$ p > 3 . By exploiting a Lagrangian-type Minkowski dimension that is very reminiscent of the Taylor’sfrozen turbulencehypothesis, our strongest upper bound on$$\zeta _p$$ ζ p coincides with the$$\beta $$ β -model proposed by Frisch, Sulem and Nelkin in the late 70s, adding some rigorous analytical foundations to the model. More generally, we explore the relationship between dimensionality assumptions on the dissipation support and restrictions on thep-th order absolute structure functions. This approach differs from the current mathematical works on intermittency by its focus on geometrical rather than purely analytical assumptions. The proof is based on a new local variant of the celebrated Constantin-E-Titi argument that features the use of a third order commutator estimate, the special double regularity of the pressure, and mollification along the flow of a vector field.  more » « less

  1. Abstract We define a type of modulus$$\operatorname {dMod}_p$$ dMod p for Lipschitz surfaces based on$$L^p$$ L p -integrable measurable differential forms, generalizing the vector modulus of Aikawa and Ohtsuka. We show that this modulus satisfies a homological duality theorem, where for Hölder conjugate exponents$$p, q \in (1, \infty )$$ p , q ( 1 , ) , every relative Lipschitzk-homology classchas a unique dual Lipschitz$$(n-k)$$ ( n - k ) -homology class$$c'$$ c such that$$\operatorname {dMod}_p^{1/p}(c) \operatorname {dMod}_q^{1/q}(c') = 1$$ dMod p 1 / p ( c ) dMod q 1 / q ( c ) = 1 and the Poincaré dual ofcmaps$$c'$$ c to 1. As$$\operatorname {dMod}_p$$ dMod p is larger than the classical surface modulus$$\operatorname {Mod}_p$$ Mod p , we immediately recover a more general version of the estimate$$\operatorname {Mod}_p^{1/p}(c) \operatorname {Mod}_q^{1/q}(c') \le 1$$ Mod p 1 / p ( c ) Mod q 1 / q ( c ) 1 , which appears in works by Freedman and He and by Lohvansuu. Our theory is formulated in the general setting of Lipschitz Riemannian manifolds, though our results appear new in the smooth setting as well. We also provide a characterization of closed and exact Sobolev forms on Lipschitz manifolds based on integration over Lipschitzk-chains.

  2. Abstract Let us fix a primepand a homogeneous system ofmlinear equations$$a_{j,1}x_1+\dots +a_{j,k}x_k=0$$ a j , 1 x 1 + + a j , k x k = 0 for$$j=1,\dots ,m$$ j = 1 , , m with coefficients$$a_{j,i}\in \mathbb {F}_p$$ a j , i F p . Suppose that$$k\ge 3m$$ k 3 m , that$$a_{j,1}+\dots +a_{j,k}=0$$ a j , 1 + + a j , k = 0 for$$j=1,\dots ,m$$ j = 1 , , m and that every$$m\times m$$ m × m minor of the$$m\times k$$ m × k matrix$$(a_{j,i})_{j,i}$$ ( a j , i ) j , i is non-singular. Then we prove that for any (large)n, any subset$$A\subseteq \mathbb {F}_p^n$$ A F p n of size$$|A|> C\cdot \Gamma ^n$$ | A | > C · Γ n contains a solution$$(x_1,\dots ,x_k)\in A^k$$ ( x 1 , , x k ) A k to the given system of equations such that the vectors$$x_1,\dots ,x_k\in A$$ x 1 , , x k A are all distinct. Here,Cand$$\Gamma $$ Γ are constants only depending onp,mandksuch that$$\Gamma Γ < p . The crucial point here is the condition for the vectors$$x_1,\dots ,x_k$$ x 1 , , x k in the solution$$(x_1,\dots ,x_k)\in A^k$$ ( x 1 , , x k ) A k to be distinct. If we relax this condition and only demand that$$x_1,\dots ,x_k$$ x 1 , , x k are not all equal, then the statement would follow easily from Tao’s slice rank polynomial method. However, handling the distinctness condition is much harder, and requires a new approach. While all previous combinatorial applications of the slice rank polynomial method have relied on the slice rank of diagonal tensors, we use a slice rank argument for a non-diagonal tensor in combination with combinatorial and probabilistic arguments.

  3. Abstract The Chabauty–Kim method and its refined variant by Betts and Dogra aim to cut out theS-integral points$$X(\mathbb {Z}_S)$$ X ( Z S ) on a curve inside thep-adic points$$X(\mathbb {Z}_p)$$ X ( Z p ) by producing enough Coleman functions vanishing on them. We derive new functions in the case of the thrice-punctured line whenScontains two primes. We describe an algorithm for computing refined Chabauty–Kim loci and verify Kim’s Conjecture over$$\mathbb {Z}[1/6]$$ Z [ 1 / 6 ] for all choices of auxiliary prime $$p < 10{,}000$$ p < 10 , 000

  4. Abstract We define the half-volume spectrum$$\{{\tilde{\omega }_p\}_{p\in \mathbb {N}}}$$ { ω ~ p } p N of a closed manifold$$(M^{n+1},g)$$ ( M n + 1 , g ) . This is analogous to the usual volume spectrum ofM, except that we restrict top-sweepouts whose slices each enclose half the volume ofM. We prove that the Weyl law continues to hold for the half-volume spectrum. We define an analogous half-volume spectrum$$\tilde{c}(p)$$ c ~ ( p ) in the phase transition setting. Moreover, for$$3 \le n+1 \le 7$$ 3 n + 1 7 , we use the Allen–Cahn min-max theory to show that each$$\tilde{c}(p)$$ c ~ ( p ) is achieved by a constant mean curvature surface enclosing half the volume ofMplus a (possibly empty) collection of minimal surfaces with even multiplicities.

  5. Abstract Assuming the Riemann Hypothesis, we study negative moments of the Riemann zeta-function and obtain asymptotic formulas in certain ranges of the shift in ζ ( s ) {\zeta(s)}. For example, integrating | ζ ( 1 2 + α + i t ) | - 2 k {|\zeta(\frac{1}{2}+\alpha+it)|^{-2k}}with respect totfromTto 2 T {2T}, we obtain an asymptotic formula when the shift α is roughly bigger than 1 log T {\frac{1}{\log T}}and k < 1 2 {k<\frac{1}{2}}. We also obtain non-trivial upper bounds for much smaller shifts, as long as log 1 α log log T {\log\frac{1}{\alpha}\ll\log\log T}. This provides partial progress towards a conjecture of Gonek on negative moments of the Riemann zeta-function, and settles the conjecture in certain ranges. As an application, we also obtain an upper bound for the average of the generalized Möbius function.
