Abstract A measurement is presented of a ratio observable that provides a measure of the azimuthal correlations among jets with large transverse momentum$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ . This observable is measured in multijet events over the range of$$p_{\textrm{T}} = 360$$ –$$3170\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$ based on data collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$$\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$$ , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 134$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ . The results are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo parton-shower event generator simulations, as well as with fixed-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) predictions at next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy obtained with different parton distribution functions (PDFs) and corrected for nonperturbative and electroweak effects. Data and theory agree within uncertainties. From the comparison of the measured observable with the pQCD prediction obtained with the NNPDF3.1 NLO PDFs, the strong coupling at the Z boson mass scale is$$\alpha _\textrm{S} (m_{{\textrm{Z}}}) =0.1177 \pm 0.0013\, \text {(exp)} _{-0.0073}^{+0.0116} \,\text {(theo)} = 0.1177_{-0.0074}^{+0.0117}$$ , where the total uncertainty is dominated by the scale dependence of the fixed-order predictions. A test of the running of$$\alpha _\textrm{S}$$ in the$$\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$$ region shows no deviation from the expected NLO pQCD behaviour.

            Abstract This paper presents the first measurement of$$\psi {(2S)}$$ and$$\chi _{c1}(3872)$$ meson production within fully reconstructed jets. Each quarkonium state (tag) is reconstructed via its decay to the$${{J \hspace{-1.66656pt}/\hspace{-1.111pt}\psi }} $$ ($$\rightarrow $$ $$\mu ^+\mu ^-$$ )$$\pi ^+\pi ^-$$ final state in the forward region using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at the center-of-mass-energy of$$13\text {TeV} $$ in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of$$1.64\,\text {\,fb} ^{-1} $$ . The fragmentation function, presented as the ratio of the quarkonium-tag transverse momentum to the full jet transverse momentum ($$p_{\textrm{T}} (\text {tag})/p_{\textrm{T}} (\text {jet})$$ ), is measured differentially in$$p_{\textrm{T}} (\text {jet})$$ and$$p_{\textrm{T}} (\text {tag})$$ bins. The distributions are separated into promptly produced quarkonia from proton-proton collisions and quarkonia produced from displacedb-hadron decays. While the displaced quarkonia fragmentation functions are in general well described by parton-shower predictions, the prompt quarkonium distributions differ significantly from fixed-order non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) predictions followed by a QCD parton shower.

The$$\varphi ^{*}_{\eta }$$ observable, derived from angular measurements of the leptons and highly correlated with$$p_{\textrm{T}} (\ell \ell )$$ , is used to probe the low-$$p_{\textrm{T}} (\ell \ell )$$ region in a complementary way. Dilepton masses up to 1$$\,\text {Te\hspace{-.08em}V}$$ are investigated. Additionally, a measurement is performed requiring at least one jet in the final state. To benefit from partial cancellation of the systematic uncertainty, the ratios of the differential cross sections for various$$m_{\ell \ell }$$ ranges to those in the Z mass peak interval are presented. The collected data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.3$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ of proton–proton collisions recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$$\,\text {Te\hspace{-.08em}V}$$ . Jets are reconstructed with the anti-$$k_{\textrm{T}} $$ algorithm for distance parameters of$$R=0.4$$ and 0.8. Cross sections are measured double-differentially (2D) as a function of the largest absolute rapidity$$|y |_{\text {max}} $$ of the two jets with the highest transverse momenta$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ and their invariant mass$$m_{1,2} $$ , and triple-differentially (3D) as a function of the rapidity separation$$y^{*} $$ , the total boost$$y_{\text {b}} $$ , and either$$m_{1,2} $$ or the average$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ of the two jets. The cross sections are unfolded to correct for detector effects and are compared with fixed-order calculations derived at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The mean charged-particle multiplicity and jet fragmentation distributions are measured in minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions at center-of-mass energy$$\sqrt{s}$$ = 13 TeV using the ALICE detector. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles produced in the midrapidity region ($$|\eta | < 0.9$$ ) using the sequential recombination anti-$$k_{\textrm{T}}$$ algorithm with jet resolution parametersR= 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 for the transverse momentum ($$p_\textrm{T}$$ ) interval 5–110 GeV/c. The high-multiplicity events are selected by the forward V0 scintillator detectors. The mean charged-particle multiplicity inside the leading jet cone rises monotonically with increasing jet$$p_\textrm{T}$$ in qualitative agreement with previous measurements at lower energies. The distributions of jet fragmentation function variables$$z^{\textrm{ch}}$$ and$$\xi ^{\textrm{ch}}$$ are measured for different jet-$$p_\textrm{T}$$ intervals. Jet-$$p_\textrm{T}$$ independent fragmentation of leading jets is observed for wider jets except at high- and low-$$z^{\textrm{ch}}$$ values. The observed “hump-backed plateau” structure in the$$\xi ^{\textrm{ch}}$$ distribution indicates suppression of low-$$p_\textrm{T}$$ particles. In high-multiplicity events, an enhancement of the fragmentation probability of low-$$z^{\textrm{ch}}$$ particles accompanied by a suppression of high-$$z^{\textrm{ch}}$$ particles is observed compared to minimum-bias events. This behavior becomes more prominent for low-$$p_\textrm{T}$$ jets with larger jet radius. The results are compared with predictions of QCD-inspired event generators, PYTHIA 8 with Monash 2013 tune and EPOS LHC. It is found that PYTHIA 8 qualitatively reproduces the jet modification in high-multiplicity events except at high jet$$p_\textrm{T}$$ . A data sample of proton–proton collisions at$$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$ corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ recorded with the CMS detector is analyzed. No statistically significant excess is observed over the standard model backgrounds. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level ($$\text {CL}$$ ) on the Higgs boson branching fraction to$$\upmu \upmu \text{ b } \text{ b } $$ and to$$\uptau \uptau \text{ b } \text{ b },$$ via a pair of$$\text {a}_{1} $$ s. The limits depend on the pseudoscalar mass$$m_{\text {a}_{1}}$$ and are observed to be in the range (0.17–3.3) $$\times 10^{-4}$$ and (1.7–7.7) $$\times 10^{-2}$$ in the$$\upmu \upmu \text{ b } \text{ b } $$ and$$\uptau \uptau \text{ b } \text{ b } $$ final states, respectively. In the framework of models with two Higgs doublets and a complex scalar singlet (2HDM+S), the results of the two final states are combined to determine upper limits on the branching fraction$${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} \rightarrow \ell \ell \text{ b } \text{ b})$$ at 95%$$\text {CL}$$ , with$$\ell $$ being a muon or a$$\uptau $$ lepton. For different types of 2HDM+S, upper bounds on the branching fraction$${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} )$$ are extracted from the combination of the two channels. In most of the Type II 2HDM+S parameter space,$${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} )$$ values above 0.23 are excluded at 95%$$\text {CL}$$ for$$m_{\text {a}_{1}}$$ values between 15 and 60$$\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$$ .more » « less

Each quarkonium state (tag) is reconstructed via its decay to the$${{J \hspace{-1.66656pt}/\hspace{-1.111pt}\psi }} $$J/ψ($$\rightarrow $$→$$\mu ^+\mu ^-$$μ+μ-)$$\pi ^+\pi ^-$$π+π-final state in the forward region using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at the center-of-mass-energy of$$13\text {TeV} $$13TeVin 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of$$1.64\,\text {\,fb} ^{-1} $$1.64\,fb-1. The fragmentation function, presented as the ratio of the quarkonium-tag transverse momentum to the full jet transverse momentum ($$p_{\textrm{T}} (\text {tag})/p_{\textrm{T}} (\text {jet})$$pT(tag)/pT(jet)), is measured differentially in$$p_{\textrm{T}} (\text {jet})$$pT(jet)and$$p_{\textrm{T}} (\text {tag})$$pT(tag)bins. The distributions are separated into promptly produced quarkonia from proton-proton collisions and quarkonia produced from displacedb-hadron decays. While the displaced quarkonia fragmentation functions are in general well described by parton-shower predictions, the prompt quarkonium distributions differ significantly from fixed-order
