Title: First Evidence for Direct CP Violation in Beauty to Charmonium Decays
The CP asymmetry and branching fraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa-suppressed decay B+J/ψπ+ are precisely measured relative to the favored decay B+J/ψK+ using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4fb1 recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV during 2016–2018. The results of the CP asymmetry difference and branching fraction ratio are ΔACPACP(B+J/ψπ+)ACP(B+J/ψK+)=(1.29±0.49±0.08)×102 , Rπ/K [B(B+J/ψπ+)/B(B+J/ψK+)]=(3.852±0.022±0.018)×102 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. A combination with previous LHCb results based on data collected at 7 and 8 TeV in 2011 and 2012 yields ΔACP=(1.42±0.43±0.08)×102 and Rπ/K =(3.846±0.018±0.018)×102 . The combined ΔACP value deviates from zero by 3.2 standard deviations, providing the first evidence for direct CP violation in the amplitudes of beauty decays to charmonium final states. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration2025CERN  more » « less

  1. The first observation of the decay Ξb ψ(2S) Ξ and measurement of the branching ratio of Ξb ψ(2S) Ξ to ΞbJ/ψΞ are presented. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay modes. The results are based on proton-proton colliding beam data from the LHC collected by the CMS experiment at s=13TeV in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140fb1 . The branching fraction ratio is measured to be B( Ξb ψ(2S) Ξ )/B( Ξb J/ψΞ )=0.8 40.19+0.21 (stat)±0.10(syst)±0.02(B) , where the last uncertainty comes from the uncertainties in the branching fractions of the charmonium states. New measurements of the Ξb(5945)0 baryon mass and natural width are also presented, using the Ξbπ+ final state, where the Ξb baryon is reconstructed through the decays J/ψΞ , ψ(2S) Ξ , J/ψΛK , and J/ψΣ0K . Finally, the fraction of Ξb baryons produced from Ξb(5945)0 decays is determined. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN

  2. We present a measurement of the branching fraction and time-dependent charge-parity ( CP ) decay-rate asymmetries in B0J/ψπ0 decays. The data sample was collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric e+e collider in 2019–2022 and contains (387±6)×106BB¯ meson pairs from ϒ(4S) decays. We reconstruct 392±24 signal decays and fit the CP parameters from the distribution of the proper-decay-time difference of the two B mesons. We measure the branching fraction to be ( B0J/ψπ0 )=(2.00±0.12±0.09)×105 and the direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries to be CCP =0.13±0.12±0.03 and SCP =0.88±0.17±0.03 , respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We observe mixing-induced CP violation with a significance of 5.0 standard deviations for the first time in this mode. Published by the American Physical Society2025

  3. A study is presented of B+KS0Kπ+K+ and B+KS0K+πK+ decays based on the analysis of proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb1 . The KS0Kπ invariant-mass distributions of both B+ decay modes show, in the m( KS0Kπ )<1.85GeV mass region, large activity which is resolved using an amplitude analysis. A simple model, where JPC amplitudes are described by multiple Breit-Wigner functions with appropriate angular distributions, provides a good description of the experimental data. In this approach a complex mixture of JPC=0+ , 1++ and 1+ amplitudes is observed that is dominated by η(1405) , η(1470) , η(1760) , f1(1285) , f1(1420) and h1(1405) resonances. The KS0Kπ Dalitz plots are dominated by asymmetric crossing K*K¯ bands which are different for the two B+ decay modes. This is due to a different interference pattern between the 1++ and 1+ amplitudes in the two channels. Branching fractions are measured for each resonant contribution. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration2025CERN

  4. We report the first evidence for the hb (2P)ϒ(1S)η transition with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations. The decay branching fraction is measured to be B[ hb (2P)ϒ(1S)η]=( 7.13.2+3.7 ±0.8)×103 , which is noticeably smaller than expected. We also set upper limits on π0 transitions of B[ hb (2P)ϒ(1S)π0]<1.8×103 , and B[ hb (1P)ϒ(1S)π0]<1.8×103 , at the 90% confidence level. These results are obtained with a 131.4fb1 data sample collected near the ϒ(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e collider. 5. A measurement of the ratio of branching fractions R(J/ψ)=B(Bc+J/ψτ+ντ)/B(Bc+J/ψμ+νμ) in the J/ψμ+μ , τ+μ+ νμ ν¯ τ decay channel is presented. This measurement uses a sample of proton-proton collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV by the CMS experiment in 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 59.7fb1 . The measured ratio, R(J/ψ)=0.1 70.17+0.18 (stat) 0.22+0.21 (syst) 0.18+0.19 (theo) =0.17±0.33 , agrees with the value of 0.2582±0.0038 predicted by the standard model, which assumes lepton flavor universality. By testing lepton flavor universality, this measurement is a probe of new physics using Bc+ mesons, which are currently only produced at the LHC.
