Title: JWST Early Release Science Program TEMPLATES: Targeting Extremely Magnified Panchromatic Lensed Arcs and Their Extended Star Formation
Abstract This paper gives an overview of Targeting Extremely Magnified Panchromatic Lensed Arcs and Their Extended Star formation (TEMPLATES), a JWST Early Release Science program that targeted four extremely bright, gravitationally lensed galaxies, two extremely dusty and two with low attenuation, as templates for galaxy evolution studies with JWST. TEMPLATES obtains a common set of spectral diagnostics for these 1.3 ≤z≤ 4.2 galaxies, in particular Hα, Paschenα, and the rest-frame optical and near-infrared continua. In addition, two of the four targets have JWST coverage of [Oiii] 5007 Å and Hβ; the other two targets have JWST coverage of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon 3.3μm and complementary Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array data covering the [Cii] 158μm emission line. The science goals of TEMPLATES are to demonstrate attenuation-robust diagnostics of star formation, map the distribution of star formation, compare the young and old stellar populations, and measure the physical conditions of star formation and their spatial variation across the galaxies. In addition, TEMPLATES has the technical goal to establish best practices for the integral field units within the NIRSpec and MIRI instruments, both in terms of observing strategy and in terms of data reduction. The paper describes TEMPLATES’s observing program, scientific and technical goals, data reduction methods, and deliverables, including high-level data products and data reduction cookbooks.  more » « less

  1. Abstract We present the first spatially resolved maps of gas-phase metallicity for two dust-obscured star-forming galaxies atz∼ 4, from the JWST TEMPLATES Early Release Science program, derived from NIRSpec integral field unit spectroscopy of the Hαand [Nii] emission lines. Empirical optical line calibrations are used to determine that the sources are globally enriched to near-solar levels. While one source shows elevated [N ii]/Hαratios and broad Hαemission consistent with the presence of an active galactic nucleus in a ≳1 kpc region, we argue that both systems have already undergone significant metal enrichment as a result of their extremely high star formation rates. Utilizing Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array rest-frame 380μm continuum and [Ci](3P23P1) line maps we compare the spatial variation of the metallicity and gas-to-dust ratio in the two galaxies, finding the two properties to be anticorrelated on highly resolved spatial scales, consistent with various literature studies ofz∼ 0 galaxies. The data are indicative of the enormous potential of JWST to probe the enrichment of the interstellar medium on ∼kpc scales in extremely dust-obscured systems atz∼ 4 and beyond.

  2. Abstract We present JWST and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) imaging for the lensing system SPT0418−47, which includes a strongly lensed, dusty, star-forming galaxy at redshiftz= 4.225 and an associated multiply imaged companion. The JWST NIRCam and MIRI imaging observations presented in this paper were acquired as part of the Early Release Science program Targeting Extremely Magnified Panchromatic Lensed Arcs and Their Extended Star formation (TEMPLATES). This data set provides robust mutiwavelength detections of stellar light in both the main (SPT0418A) and companion (SPT0418B) galaxies, while the ALMA detection of [Cii] emission confirms that SPT0418B lies at the same redshift as SPT0418A. We infer that the projected physical separation of the two galaxies is 4.42 ± 0.05 kpc. We derive total magnifications ofμ= 29 ± 1 andμ= 4.1 ± 0.7 for SPT0418A and SPT0418B, respectively. We use bothprospectorandcigaleto derive stellar masses. We find that SPT0418A has a stellar mass of M* = 3.40.6+1.1 ×1010 M fromprospector orM*= 1.5 ± 0.3 × 1010Mfromcigale. The stellar mass ratio of SPT0418A and SPT0418B is roughly between 4 and 7 ( 4.21.6+1.9 forprospectorand 7.5 ± 3.7 forcigale). We see evidence of extended structure associated with SPT0418A that is suggestive of a tidal feature. These features, along with the close projected proximity, imply that the system is interacting. Interestingly, the star formation rates and stellar masses of both galaxies are consistent with the main sequence of star-forming galaxies at this epoch, indicating that this ongoing interaction has not noticeably elevated the star formation levels.

  3. We used the ultra-deep GLIMPSE JWST/NIRCam survey to constrain the faint end of the [O III]+Hβluminosity function (LF) down to 1039erg s−1atz ∼ 7 − 9 behind the lensed Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster Abell S1063. We applied a spectral energy distribution fitting on a Lyman-break galaxy selected sample of 164 lensed galaxies and measured their combined Hβ+[O III]λλ4960, 5008 flux to build the emission line LF. We found a [O III]+HβLF with a faint-end slope (α= −1.78+0.06−0.06forz = 7 − 8 andα= −1.55+0.11−0.11forz = 8 − 9), which is flatter than the UV LF at similar redshifts (α ≤ −2) and suggests a lower number density of weak [O III]+Hβemitting galaxies at fixedMUV. We analysed several possible explanations: (i) a decrease in the [O III]+Hβ-to-UV ratio due to bursty star formation histories (SFHs), (ii) the effect of metallicity on the [O III]-to-Hβratio, or (iii) signs of a faint-end turnover in the UV LF. Under the assumption of an evolving [O III]-to-Hβratio, we separated the contribution of [O III]λ5008 and Hβand obtained a flatter [O III]λ5008 LF (α= −1.66+0.05−0.05forz = 7 − 8 andα= −1.45+0.09−0.10forz = 8 − 9) but steeper HβLF ($$ \alpha=-1.95_{-0.08}^{+0.08} $$ forz = 7 − 8 andα= −1.68+0.13−0.14forz = 8 − 9). The combination of a decreasing metallicity and bursty SFH can reconcile the observed differences between the UV and [O III]+HβLF. By converting this LF into the ionising photon-production rateṄion, we show that galaxies withL ≥ 1039erg s−1, that is, with a star formation rate (SFR) (Hα)  ≥  5 × 10−3Myr−1) cause 31%−90% and 46%−156% of the ionising photon budget (at 7 < z < 8 and 8 < z < 9), when we assume a constant escape fraction of Lyman-continuum photon (fesc = 0.14). The shape of the LF further shows the negligible contribution of faint galaxies to theṄion. Additionally, we derived the cosmic star formation rate density (SFRD), finding results consistent with previous estimates. However, the sensitivity of GLIMPSE to lower SFRs reinforces the conclusion that very faint galaxies contribute very little toṄionand the SFRD. Our results suggests that GLIMPSE has detected the bulk of the total [O III]+Hβemission from star-forming galaxies, and that galaxies below our detection limits are likely minor contributors to cosmic re-ionisation.

  4. Abstract We report the discovery of two companion sources to a strongly lensed galaxy SPT0418-47 (“ring”) at redshift 4.225, targeted by the JWST Early Release Science program. We confirm that these sources are at a similar redshift to the ring based on H α detected in the NIRSpec spectrum and [C ii ] λ 158 μ m line from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Using multiple spectral lines detected in JWST/NIRSpec, the rest-frame optical to infrared images from NIRCam and MIRI and far-infrared dust continuum detected by ALMA, we argue that the newly discovered sources are actually lensed images of the same companion galaxy SPT0418-SE, hereafter referred to “SE,” located within 5 kpc in the source plane of the ring. The star formation rate derived using [C ii ] and the dust continuum puts a lower limit of 17 M ☉ yr −1 , while the SFR H α is estimated to be >2 times lower, thereby confirming that SE is a dust-obscured star-forming galaxy. Analysis using optical strong line diagnostics suggests that SE has near-solar elemental abundance, while the ring appears to have supersolar metallicity O/H and N/O. We attempt to reconcile the high metallicity in this system by invoking early onset of star formation with continuous high star-forming efficiency or by suggesting that optical strong line diagnostics need revision at high redshift. We suggest that SPT0418-47 resides in a massive dark-matter halo with yet-to-be-discovered neighbors. This work highlights the importance of joint analysis of JWST and ALMA data for a deep and complete picture of the early universe.

  5. We use JWST Near-Infrared Spectrograph observations from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release survey, GLASS-JWST ERS (GLASS), and JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey to measure rest-frame optical emission-line ratios of 89 galaxies atz > 4. The stacked spectra of galaxies with and without a broad-line feature reveal a difference in the [Oiii]λ4364 and Hγratios. This motivated our investigation of the [Oiii]λ4364/Hγversus [Neiii]/[Oii] diagram. We define two active galactic nucleus (AGN)/star formation (SF) classification lines based on 21,048 Sloan Digital Sky Survey galaxies atz ∼ 0. After applying a redshift correction to the AGN/SF lines, we find 69.2% of broad-line active galactic nuclei (BLAGN) continue to land in the AGN region of the diagnostic, largely due to the [Neiii]/[Oii] ratio. However, 33.0% of non-BLAGN land is in the AGN region as well. The [Oiii]λ4364/Hγversus [Neiii]/[Oii] diagram does not robustly separate BLAGN from non-broad-line galaxies atz> 4. This could be due to star-forming galaxies having harder ionization, or these galaxies contain a narrow line AGN, which are not accounted for. We further inspected galaxies without broad emission lines in each region of [Oiii]λ4364/Hγversus [Neiii]/[Oii] diagram and found that they have slightly stronger Ciii]λ1908 fluxes and equivalent width when landing in the BLAGN region. However, the cause of this higher ionization is unclear and may be revealed by observing UV lines.
