Abstract We measure the CO-to-H2conversion factor (αCO) in 37 galaxies at 2 kpc resolution, using the dust surface density inferred from far-infrared emission as a tracer of the gas surface density and assuming a constant dust-to-metal ratio. In total, we have ∼790 and ∼610 independent measurements ofαCOfor CO (2–1) and (1–0), respectively. The mean values forαCO (2–1)andαCO (1–0)are and , respectively. The CO-intensity-weighted mean is 5.69 forαCO (2–1)and 3.33 forαCO (1–0). We examine howαCOscales with several physical quantities, e.g., the star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass, and dust-mass-weighted average interstellar radiation field strength ( ). Among them, , ΣSFR, and the integrated CO intensity (WCO) have the strongest anticorrelation with spatially resolvedαCO. We provide linear regression results toαCOfor all quantities tested. At galaxy-integrated scales, we observe significant correlations betweenαCOandWCO, metallicity, , and ΣSFR. We also find thatαCOin each galaxy decreases with the stellar mass surface density (Σ⋆) in high-surface-density regions (Σ⋆≥ 100M⊙pc−2), following the power-law relations and . The power-law index is insensitive to the assumed dust-to-metal ratio. We interpret the decrease inαCOwith increasing Σ⋆as a result of higher velocity dispersion compared to isolated, self-gravitating clouds due to the additional gravitational force from stellar sources, which leads to the reduction inαCO. The decrease inαCOat high Σ⋆is important for accurately assessing molecular gas content and star formation efficiency in the centers of galaxies, which bridge “Milky Way–like” to “starburst-like” conversion factors.

A Massive H i -absorption-selected Galaxy at z ≈ 2.356
Abstract We use the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array to detect CO(1–0), CO(3–2), and rest-frame 349 GHz continuum emission from an Hi-selected galaxy, DLA1020+2733g, atz ≈ 2.3568 in the field of thez= 2.3553 damped Lyαabsorber (DLA) toward QSO J1020+2733. The VLA CO(1–0) detection yields a molecular gas mass of (2.84 ± 0.42) × 1011 × (αCO/4.36)M⊙, the largest ever measured in an Hi-selected galaxy. The DLA metallicity is +0.28 ± 0.16, from the Zniiλ2026 absorption line detected in a Keck Echellette Spectrograph and Imager spectrum. This continues the trend of high-metallicity DLAs being frequently associated with massive galaxies. We obtain a star formation rate (SFR) of ≲400M⊙yr−1from the rest-frame 349 GHz continuum emission and a relatively long molecular gas depletion timescale of ≳0.6 Gyr. The excitation of theJ= 3 rotational level is subthermal, with , suggesting that DLA1020+2733g has a low SFR surface density. The large velocity spread of the CO lines, ≈500 km s−1, and the long molecular gas depletion timescale suggest that DLA1020+2733g is likely to be a cold rotating-disk galaxy.

Abstract We report statistically significant detection of Hi21 cm emission from intermediate-redshift (z ≈ 0.2–0.6) galaxies. By leveraging multisightline galaxy survey data from the Cosmic Ultraviolet Baryon Survey and deep radio observations from the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey, we have established a sample of ≈6000 spectroscopically identified galaxies in 11 distinct fields to constrain the neutral gas content at intermediate redshifts. The galaxies sample a broad range in stellar mass, from to , with a median of and a wide range in redshift fromz ≈ 0.24 toz ≈ 0.63 with a median of 〈z〉med = 0.44. While no individual galaxies show detectable Hiemission, the emission line signal is detected in the stacked spectra of all subsamples at greater than 4σsignificance. The observed total Hi21 cm line flux translates to a Himass,MH I≈1010M⊙. We find a high Hi-to-stellar-mass ratio ofMHI/Mstar ≈ 6 for low-mass galaxies with (>3.7σ). For galaxies with , we findMHI/Mstar ≈ 0.3 (>4.7σ). In addition, the redshift evolution of Himass, 〈MH I〉, in both low- and high-mass field galaxies, inferred from the stacked emission-line signal, aligns well with the expectation from the cosmic star formation history. This suggests that the overall decline in the cosmic star formation activity across the general galaxy population may be connected to a decreasing supply of neutral hydrogen. Finally, our analysis has revealed significant 21 cm signals at distances greater than 75 kpc from these intermediate-redshift galaxies, indicating a substantial reservoir of Higas in their extended surroundings.more » « less

Abstract We present13CO(J= 1 → 0) observations for the EDGE-CALIFA survey, which is a mapping survey of 126 nearby galaxies at a typical spatial resolution of 1.5 kpc. Using detected12CO emission as a prior, we detect13CO in 41 galaxies via integrated line flux over the entire galaxy and in 30 galaxies via integrated line intensity in resolved synthesized beams. Incorporating our CO observations and optical IFU spectroscopy, we perform a systematic comparison between the line ratio and the properties of the stars and ionized gas. Higher values are found in interacting galaxies compared to those in noninteracting galaxies. The global slightly increases with infrared colorF60/F100but appears insensitive to other host-galaxy properties such as morphology, stellar mass, or galaxy size. We also present azimuthally averaged profiles for our sample up to a galactocentric radius of 0.4r25(∼6 kpc), taking into account the13CO nondetections by spectral stacking. The radial profiles of are quite flat across our sample. Within galactocentric distances of 0.2r25, the azimuthally averaged increases with the star formation rate. However, Spearman rank correlation tests show the azimuthally averaged does not strongly correlate with any other gas or stellar properties in general, especially beyond 0.2r25from the galaxy centers. Our findings suggest that in the complex environments in galaxy disks, is not a sensitive tracer for ISM properties. Dynamical disturbances, like galaxy interactions or the presence of a bar, also have an overall impact on , which further complicates the interpretations of variations.more » « less

Abstract We present a survey undertaken with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to study the galaxies associated with a representative sample of 16 damped Lyαabsorbers (DLAs) atz ≈ 4.1–4.5, using the [Cii] 158μm ([Cii]) line. We detect seven [Cii]-emitting galaxies in the fields of five DLAs, all of which have absorption metallicity [M/H] > −1.5. We find that the detectability of these Hi-selected galaxies with ALMA is a strong function of DLA metallicity, with a detection rate of % for DLAs with [M/H] > −1.5 and 0+18% for DLAs with [M/H] < −1.5. The identified DLA galaxies have far-IR properties similar to those of typical star-forming galaxies atz ∼ 4, with estimated obscured star formation rates ranging from ≲6M⊙yr−1to 110M⊙yr−1. High-metallicity DLAs therefore provide an efficient way to identify and study samples of high-redshift, star-forming galaxies, without preselecting the galaxies by their emission properties. The agreement between the velocities of the metal absorption lines of the DLA and the [Cii] emission line of the DLA galaxy indicates that the metals within the DLA originated in the galaxy. With observed impact parameters between 14 and 59 kpc, this indicates that star-forming galaxies atz ∼ 4 have a substantial reservoir of dense, cold, neutral gas within their circumgalactic medium that has been enriched with metals from the galaxy.more » « less

Abstract We analyze the CO-to-H2conversion factor (αCO) in the nearby barred spiral galaxy M83. We present new Hiobservations from the VLA and single-dish GBT in the disk of the galaxy, and combine them with maps of CO(1-0) integrated intensity and dust surface density from the literature.αCOand the gas-to-dust ratio (δGDR) are simultaneously derived in annuli of 2 kpc width fromR= 1–7 kpc. We find thatαCOandδGDRboth increase radially, by a factor of ∼2–3 from the center to the outskirts of the disk. The luminosity-weighted averages over the disk areαCO= 3.14 (2.06, 4.96) andδGDR= 137 (111, 182) at the 68% (1σ) confidence level. These are consistent with theαCOandδGDRvalues measured in the Milky Way. In addition to possible variations ofαCOdue to the radial metallicity gradient, we test the possibility of variations inαCOdue to changes in the underlying cloud populations, as a function of galactic radius. Using a truncated power-law molecular cloud CO luminosity function and an empirical power-law relation for cloud mass and luminosity, we show that the changes in the underlying cloud population may account for a factor of ∼1.5–2.0 radial change inαCO.more » « less
