Title: System size and energy dependence of the mean transverse momentum fluctuations at the LHC
Abstract Event-by-event fluctuations of the event-wise mean transverse momentum,$$\langle p_{\textrm{T}}\rangle $$ pT , of charged particles produced in proton–proton (pp) collisions at$$\sqrt{s}$$ s = 5.02 TeV, Xe–Xe collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$$ sNN = 5.44 TeV, and Pb–Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$$ sNN = 5.02 TeV are studied using the ALICE detector based on the integral correlator$$\langle \!\langle \Delta p_\textrm{T}\Delta p_\textrm{T}\rangle \!\rangle $$ ΔpTΔpT . The correlator strength is found to decrease monotonically with increasing produced charged-particle multiplicity measured at midrapidity in all three systems. In Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions, the multiplicity dependence of the correlator deviates significantly from a simple power-law scaling as well as from the predictions of the HIJING and AMPT models. The observed deviation from power-law scaling is expected from transverse radial flow in semicentral to central Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions. In pp collisions, the correlation strength is also studied by classifying the events based on the transverse spherocity,$$S_0$$ S0 , of the particle production at midrapidity, used as a proxy for the presence of a pronounced back-to-back jet topology. Low-spherocity (jetty) events feature a larger correlation strength than those with high spherocity (isotropic). The strength and multiplicity dependence of jetty and isotropic events are well reproduced by calculations with the PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC models.  more » « less

  1. Abstract This paper presents the measurement of the isolated prompt photon inclusive production cross section in pp and p–Pb collisions by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC. The measurement is performed in p–Pb collisions at centre-of-mass energies per nucleon pair of$$\sqrt{s_{\text {NN}}}={5.02}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ sNN =5.02TeV and 8.16 TeV, as well as in pp collisions at$$\sqrt{s}={5.02}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ s=5.02TeV and 8 TeV. The cross section is obtained at midrapidity$$(|y|<0.7)$$ (|y|<0.7) using a charged-track based isolation momentum$$p_\textrm{T}^{\text {iso,~ch}}<{1.5}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ pTiso, ch <1.5GeV/c in a cone with radius$$R=0.4$$ R=0.4 . The data for both collision systems are well reproduced by perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations at next-to-leading order (NLO) using recent parton distribution functions for free (PDF) and bound (nPDF) nucleons. Furthermore, the nuclear modification factor$$R_{\text {pA}}$$ RpA for both collision energies is consistent with unity for$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT $$>{20}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ >20GeV/c . However, deviations from unity ($$R_\textrm{pA}<1$$ RpA<1 ) of up to 20% are observed for$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT $$<{20}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ <20GeV/c with limited significance, indicating the possible presence of nuclear effects in the initial state of the collision. The suppression increases with decreasing$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT with a significance of$$2.3\upsigma $$ 2.3σ for a non-zero slope and yields$$R_{\textrm{pA}}<1$$ RpA<1 with a significance of$$1.8\upsigma $$ 1.8σ at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}={8.16}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ sNN =8.16TeV for$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT $$<{20}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ <20GeV/c . In addition, a significance of$$1.1\upsigma $$ 1.1σ is observed for$$R_{\textrm{pA}}<1$$ RpA<1 at the lower collision energy$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}={5.02}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ sNN =5.02TeV for$$p_{\textrm{T}} < {14}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ pT<14GeV/c . The magnitude and shape of the suppression are consistent with pQCD predictions at NLO using nPDFs that incorporate nuclear shadowing effects in the Pb nucleus.

  2. Abstract The azimuthal-correlation distributions between electrons from the decays of heavy-flavor hadrons and associated charged particles in Pb–Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$$ sNN =5.02 TeV are reported for the 0–10% and 30–50% centrality classes. This measurement provides access to the jet-like correlation observables in the heavy-flavor sector in Pb–Pb collisions. The analysis is performed for trigger electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays with transverse momentum$$4< p_\textrm{T}^\textrm{e} < 16~\textrm{GeV}/c$$ 4<pTe<16GeV/c , considering associated particles within the transverse-momentum range$$1< p_\textrm{T}^\textrm{assoc} < 7$$ 1<pTassoc<7 $$\textrm{GeV}/c$$ GeV/c , and a pseudorapidity difference of$$|\Delta \eta |<1$$ |Δη|<1 between the trigger electron and associated particles. The per-trigger nuclear modification factor ($$I_\textrm{AA}$$ IAA ) is calculated to compare the near- and away-side peak yields to those in pp collisions at$$\sqrt{s} = 5.02$$ s=5.02 TeV. In 0–10% central collisions, the$$I_\textrm{AA}$$ IAA indicates a hint of enhancement of associated-particle yields with$$p_\textrm{T}<3$$ pT<3 GeV/con the near side, and a suppression of yields with$$p_\textrm{T}>4$$ pT>4 GeV/con the away side. The$$I_\textrm{AA}$$ IAA for electron triggers from heavy-flavor hadron decays is compared with that for light-flavor and strange-particle triggers to investigate the dependence on different fragmentation processes and parton-medium dynamics, and is found to be the same within uncertainties.

  3. Abstract Measurements of charged-particle production in pp, p–Pb, and Pb–Pb collisions in the toward, away, and transverse regions with the ALICE detector are discussed. These regions are defined event-by-event relative to the azimuthal direction of the charged trigger particle, which is the reconstructed particle with the largest transverse momentum$$ \left({p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{trig}}\right) $$ pTtrig in the range 8<$$ {p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\textrm{trig}} $$ pTtrig <15 GeV/c. The toward and away regions contain the primary and recoil jets, respectively; both regions are accompanied by the underlying event (UE). In contrast, the transverse region perpendicular to the direction of the trigger particle is dominated by the so-called UE dynamics, and includes also contributions from initial- and final-state radiation. The relative transverse activity classifier,$$ {R}_{\textrm{T}}={N}_{\textrm{ch}}^{\textrm{T}}/\left\langle {N}_{\textrm{ch}}^{\textrm{T}}\right\rangle $$ RT=NchT/ NchT , is used to group events according to their UE activity, where$$ {N}_{\textrm{ch}}^{\textrm{T}} $$ NchT is the charged-particle multiplicity per event in the transverse region and$$ \left\langle {N}_{\textrm{ch}}^{\textrm{T}}\right\rangle $$ NchT is the mean value over the whole analysed sample. The energy dependence of theRTdistributions in pp collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 2.76, 5.02, 7, and 13 TeV is reported, exploring the Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling properties of the multiplicity distributions. The first measurements of charged-particlepTspectra as a function ofRTin the three azimuthal regions in pp, p–Pb, and Pb–Pb collisions at$$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ sNN = 5.02 TeV are also reported. Data are compared with predictions obtained from the event generators PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC. This set of measurements is expected to contribute to the understanding of the origin of collective-like effects in small collision systems (pp and p–Pb).

  4. Abstract The dependence of$$\textrm{f}_{0}$$ f0 (980) production on the final-state charged-particle multiplicity is reported for proton–proton (pp) collisions at the centre-of-mass energy,$$\sqrt{s}=$$ s=  13 TeV. The production of$$\textrm{f}_{0}$$ f0 (980) is measured with the ALICE detector via the$$\textrm{f}_0 (980) \rightarrow \pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ f0(980)π+π- decay channel in a midrapidity region of$$|y|<$$ |y|<  0.5. The evolution of the integrated yields and mean transverse momentum of f$$_{0}$$ 0 (980) as a function of charged-particle multiplicity measured in pp at$$\sqrt{s}=$$ s=  13 TeV follows the trends observed in pp at$$\sqrt{s}=$$ s=  5.02 TeV and in proton–lead (p–Pb) collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}=$$ sNN =  5.02 TeV. Particle yield ratios of$$\textrm{f}_{0}$$ f0 (980) to$$\pi ^{\pm }$$ π± and$$\textrm{K}^{*}$$ K (892)$$^{0}$$ 0 are found to decrease with increasing charged-particle multiplicity. These particle ratios are compared with calculations from the canonical statistical thermal model as a function of charged-particle multiplicity. The thermal model calculations provide a better description of the decreasing trend of particle ratios when no strange or antistrange quark composition for f$$_{0}$$ 0 (980) is assumed, which suggests that the data do not support significant hidden strangeness in the$$\textrm{f}_{0} (980)$$ f0(980)

  5. Abstract The azimuthal ($$\Delta \varphi $$ Δφ ) correlation distributions between heavy-flavor decay electrons and associated charged particles are measured in pp and p–Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{{NN}}}} = 5.02$$ sNN =5.02 TeV. Results are reported for electrons with transverse momentum$$4 4<pT<16 $$\textrm{GeV}/c$$ GeV/c  and pseudorapidity$$|\eta |<0.6$$ |η|<0.6 . The associated charged particles are selected with transverse momentum$$1 1<pT<7 $$\textrm{GeV}/c$$ GeV/c , and relative pseudorapidity separation with the leading electron$$|\Delta \eta | < 1$$ |Δη|<1 . The correlation measurements are performed to study and characterize the fragmentation and hadronization of heavy quarks. The correlation structures are fitted with a constant and two von Mises functions to obtain the baseline and the near- and away-side peaks, respectively. The results from p–Pb collisions are compared with those from pp collisions to study the effects of cold nuclear matter. In the measured trigger electron and associated particle kinematic regions, the two collision systems give consistent results. The$$\Delta \varphi $$ Δφ distribution and the peak observables in pp and p–Pb collisions are compared with calculations from various Monte Carlo event generators.
