Title: Incentive Effects Capture Variability in Task-General Control Allocation.
To understand how people vary in their cognitive control engagement, researchers use different laboratory tasks and compare performance on trials that are more versus less control-demanding (e.g., congruency effects). However, previous research has struggled to uncover consistent patterns of correlation across cognitive control tasks, leading to questions about the utility of these tasks and the existence of task-general control. The current study sought to test whether these validity concerns may center on the stimulus-driven nature of congruency effects, rather than the tasks themselves. To overcome this obstacle, we varied task incentives while holding stimulus features constant. We show both theoretically and empirically that the effects of incentives on control allocation correlate across tasks.   1. Abstract The effects of bilingual language experience on cognitive control are still debated. A recent proposal is that being bilingual enhances attentional control. This is based on studies showing smaller effects of the nature of the preceding trial on the current trial in bilinguals (Grundy et al., 2017). However, performance on such tasks can also be accounted for by lower-level processes such as the binding and unbinding of stimulus and response features. The current study used a Partial Repetition Cost paradigm to explicitly test whether language experience can affect such processes. Results showed that bi- and monolinguals did not differ in their responses when the stimulus features were task-relevant. However, the bilinguals showed smaller partial repetition costs when the features were task-irrelevant. These findings suggest that language experience does not affect lower-level processes, and supports the view that bilinguals exhibit enhanced attentional disengagement.

  2. Episodic memories are records of personally experienced events, coded neurally via the hippocampus and sur- rounding medial temporal lobe cortex. Information about the neural signal corresponding to a memory representation can be measured in fMRI data when the pattern across voxels is examined. Prior studies have found that similarity in the voxel patterns across repetition of a to-be-remembered stimulus predicts later memory retrieval, but the results are inconsistent across studies. The current study investigates the possibility that cognitive goals (defined here via the task instructions given to participants) during encoding affect the voxel pattern that will later support memory retrieval, and therefore that neural representations cannot be interpreted based on the stimulus alone. The behavioral results showed that exposure to variable cognitive tasks across repetition of events benefited subsequent memory retrieval. Voxel patterns in the hippocampus indicated a significant interaction between cognitive tasks (variable vs. consistent) and memory (remembered vs. forgotten) such that reduced voxel pattern similarity for repeated events with variable cognitive tasks, but not consistent cognitive tasks, sup- ported later memory success. There was no significant interaction in neural pattern similarity between cognitive tasks and memory success in medial temporal cortices or lateral occipital cortex. Instead, higher similarity in voxel patterns in right medial temporal cortices was associated with later memory retrieval, regardless of cognitive task. In conclusion, we found that the relationship between pattern similarity across repeated encoding and memory success in the hippocampus (but not medial temporal lobe cortex) changes when the cognitive task during encoding does or does not vary across repetitions of the event.

    To invest effort into any cognitive task, people must be sufficiently motivated. Whereas prior research has focused primarily on how the cognitive control required to complete these tasks is motivated by the potential rewards for success, it is also known that control investment can be equally motivated by the potential negative consequence for failure. Previous theoretical and experimental work has yet to examine how positive and negative incentives differentially influence the manner and intensity with which people allocate control. Here, we develop and test a normative model of control allocation under conditions of varying positive and negative performance incentives. Our model predicts, and our empirical findings confirm, that rewards for success and punishment for failure should differentially influence adjustments to the evidence accumulation rate versus response threshold, respectively. This dissociation further enabled us to infer how motivated a given person was by the consequences of success versus failure.

  4. Abstract Retrospective judgments require decision-makers to gather information over time and integrate that information into a summary statistic like the average. Many retrospective judgments require putting equal weight on early and late information, in contrast to prospective judgments that involve predicting the future and so rely more on late information. We investigate how people weight information over time when continuously reporting the average stimulus strength in a sequence of displays. We investigate the consistency of these temporal profiles across perceptual and value-based tasks using both behavior and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. We found that people display remarkably consistent temporal weighting functions across choice domains, with a generally strong recency bias and modest primacy bias. The fMRI data revealed evidence-tracking activity in the cuneus in both tasks and in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in the value-based task. Finally, a network of cognitive control regions is more active for people who exhibit a stronger primacy vs. recency bias. Together, our behavioral findings indicate that people consistently overweight recency when evaluating past information, and the neural data suggest that overcoming this tendency may require cognitive control.

    Abstract Information processing under conditions of uncertainty requires the involvement of cognitive control. Despite behavioral evidence of the supramodal function (i.e., independent of sensory modality) of cognitive control, the underlying neural mechanism needs to be directly tested. This study used functional magnetic imaging together with visual and auditory perceptual decision-making tasks to examine brain activation as a function of uncertainty in the two stimulus modalities. The results revealed a monotonic increase in activation in the cortical regions of the cognitive control network (CCN) as a function of uncertainty in the visual and auditory modalities. The intrinsic connectivity between the CCN and sensory regions was similar for the visual and auditory modalities. Furthermore, multivariate patterns of activation in the CCN predicted the level of uncertainty within and across stimulus modalities. These findings suggest that the CCN implements cognitive control by processing uncertainty as abstract information independent of stimulus modality.
