Title: Relationships between Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Small Dust Grains, H 2 , and H i in Local Group Dwarf Galaxies NGC 6822 and WLM Using JWST, ALMA, and the VLA
Abstract We present 0.6–3.2 pc resolution mid-infrared (MIR) JWST images at 7.7μm (F770W) and 21μm (F2100W) covering the main star-forming regions of two of the closest star-forming low-metallicity dwarf galaxies, NGC 6822 and Wolf–Lundmark–Melotte (WLM). The images of NGC 6822 reveal filaments, edge-brightened bubbles, diffuse emission, and a plethora of point sources. By contrast, most of the MIR emission in WLM is pointlike, with a small amount of extended emission. Compared to solar-metallicity galaxies, the ratio of 7.7μm intensity ( I ν F770W ), tracing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), to 21μm intensity ( I ν F2100W ), tracing small, warm dust grain emission, is suppressed in these low-metallicity dwarfs. Using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array CO(2–1) observations, we find that detected CO intensity versus I ν F770W at ≈2 pc resolution in dwarfs follows a similar relationship to that at solar metallicity and lower resolution, while the CO versus I ν F2100W relationship in dwarfs lies significantly below that derived from solar-metallicity galaxies at lower resolution, suggesting more pronounced destruction of CO molecules at low metallicity. Finally, adding in Local Group L-Band Survey 21 cm Hiobservations from the Very Large Array, we find that I ν F2100W and I ν F770W versus total gas ratios are suppressed in NGC 6822 and WLM compared to solar-metallicity galaxies. In agreement with dust models, the level of suppression appears to be at least partly accounted for by the reduced galaxy-averaged dust-to-gas and PAH-to-dust mass ratios in the dwarfs. Remaining differences are likely due to spatial variations in dust model parameters, which should be an exciting direction for future work in local dwarf galaxies.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are promising candidate sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, since they provide environments rich in matter and photon targets where cosmic-ray interactions may lead to the production of gamma rays and neutrinos. We searched for high-energy neutrino emission from AGN using the Swift-BAT Spectroscopic Survey catalog of hard X-ray sources and 12 yr of IceCube muon track data. First, upon performing a stacked search, no significant emission was found. Second, we searched for neutrinos from a list of 43 candidate sources and found an excess from the direction of two sources, the Seyfert galaxies NGC 1068 and NGC 4151. We observed NGC 1068 at flux ϕ ν μ + ν ¯ μ = 4.0 2 1.52 + 1.58 × 1 0 11 TeV−1cm−2s−1normalized at 1 TeV, with a power-law spectral indexγ= 3.10 0.22 + 0.26 , consistent with previous IceCube results. The observation of a neutrino excess from the direction of NGC 4151 is at a posttrial significance of 2.9σ. If interpreted as an astrophysical signal, the excess observed from NGC 4151 corresponds to a flux ϕ ν μ + ν ¯ μ = 1.5 1 0.81 + 0.99 × 1 0 11 TeV−1cm−2s−1normalized at 1 TeV andγ= 2.83 0.28 + 0.35

  2. Abstract We present ∼300 stellar metallicity measurements in two faint M31 dwarf galaxies, Andromeda XVI (MV= −7.5) and Andromeda XXVIII (MV= –8.8), derived using metallicity-sensitive calcium H and K narrowband Hubble Space Telescope imaging. These are the first individual stellar metallicities in And XVI (95 stars). Our And XXVIII sample (191 stars) is a factor of ∼15 increase over literature metallicities. For And XVI, we measure [Fe/H] = 2.17 0.05 + 0.05 , σ [Fe/H] = 0.33 0.07 + 0.07 , and ∇[Fe/H]= −0.23 ± 0.15 dex R e 1 . We find that And XVI is more metal-rich than Milky Way ultrafaint dwarf galaxies of similar luminosity, which may be a result of its unusually extended star formation history. For And XXVIII, we measure [Fe/H] = 1.95 0.04 + 0.04 , σ [Fe/H] = 0.34 0.05 + 0.05 , and ∇[Fe/H]= −0.46 ± 0.10 dex R e 1 , placing it on the dwarf galaxy mass–metallicity relation. Neither galaxy has a metallicity distribution function (MDF) with an abrupt metal-rich truncation, suggesting that star formation fell off gradually. The stellar metallicity gradient measurements are among the first for faint (L≲ 106L) galaxies outside the Milky Way halo. Both galaxies’ gradients are consistent with predictions from the FIRE simulations, where an age–gradient strength relationship is the observational consequence of stellar feedback that produces dark matter cores. We include a catalog for community spectroscopic follow-up, including 19 extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H] < –3.0) star candidates, which make up 7% of And XVI’s MDF and 6% of And XXVIII’s.

  3. Abstract We measure the metallicities of 374 red giant branch (RGB) stars in the isolated, quenched dwarf galaxy Tucana using Hubble Space Telescope narrowband (F395N) calcium H and K imaging. Our sample is a factor of ∼7 larger than what is available from previous studies. Our main findings are as follows. (i) A global metallicity distribution function (MDF) with [Fe/H] = 1.55 0.04 + 0.04 and σ [Fe/H] = 0.54 0.03 + 0.03 . (ii) A metallicity gradient of −0.54 ± 0.07 dex R e 1 (−2.1 ± 0.3 dex kpc−1) over the extent of our imaging (∼2.5Re), which is steeper than literature measurements. Our finding is consistent with predicted gradients from the publicly available FIRE-2 simulations, in which bursty star formation creates stellar population gradients and dark matter cores. (iii) Tucana’s bifurcated RGB has distinct metallicities: a blue RGB with [Fe/H] = 1.78 0.06 + 0.06 and σ [Fe/H] = 0.44 0.06 + 0.07 and a red RGB with [Fe/H] = 1.08 0.07 + 0.07 and σ [Fe/H] = 0.42 0.06 + 0.06 . (iv) At fixed stellar mass, Tucana is more metal-rich than Milky Way satellites by ∼0.4 dex, but its blue RGB is chemically comparable to the satellites. Tucana’s MDF appears consistent with star-forming isolated dwarfs, though MDFs of the latter are not as well populated. (v) About 2% of Tucana’s stars have [Fe/H] < −3% and 20% have [Fe/H] > −1. We provide a catalog for community spectroscopic follow-up.

  4. Abstract The circumgalactic medium (CGM) is poorly constrained at the subparsec scales relevant to turbulent energy dissipation and regulation of multiphase structure. Fast radio bursts are sensitive to small-scale plasma density fluctuations, which can induce multipath propagation (scattering). The amount of scattering depends on the density fluctuation spectrum, including its amplitude C n 2 , spectral indexβ, and dissipation scaleli. We use quasar observations of CGM turbulence at ≳pc scales to infer C n 2 , finding it to be 1 0 16 C n 2 1 0 9 m−20/3for hot (T> 106K) gas and 1 0 8 C n 2 1 0 4 m−20/3for cool (104≲T≲ 105K) gas, depending on the gas sound speed and density. These values of C n 2 are much smaller than those inferred in the interstellar medium at similar physical scales. The resulting scattering delays from the hot CGM are negligible (≪1μs at 1 GHz), but they are more detectable from the cool gas as either radio pulse broadening or scintillation, depending on the observing frequency and sightline geometry. Joint quasar-FRB observations of individual galaxies can yield lower limits onli, even if the CGM is not a significant scattering site. An initial comparison between quasar and FRB observations (albeit for different systems) suggestsli≳ 750 km in ∼104K gas in order for the quasar and FRB constraints to be consistent. If a foreground CGM is completely ruled out as a source of scattering along an FRB sightline, thenlimay be comparable to the smallest cloud sizes (≲pc) inferred from photoionization modeling of quasar absorption lines.

  5. Abstract We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of the [CI] 492 and 806 GHz fine-structure lines in 25 dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) atz= 4.3 in the core of the SPT2349–56 protocluster. The protocluster galaxies exhibit a median L [ C I ] ( 2 1 ) / L [ C I ] ( 1 0 ) ratio of 0.94, with an interquartile range of 0.81–1.24. These ratios are markedly different to those observed in DSFGs in the field (across a comparable redshift and 850μm flux density range), where the median is 0.55, with an interquartile range of 0.50–0.76, and we show that this difference is driven by an excess of [Ci](2–1) in the protocluster galaxies for a given 850μm flux density. Assuming local thermal equilibrium, we estimate gas excitation temperatures of T ex = 59 . 1 6.8 + 8.1 K for our protocluster sample and T ex = 33 . 9 2.2 + 2.4 K for the field sample. Our main interpretation of this result is that the protocluster galaxies have had their cold gas driven to their cores via close-by interactions within the dense environment, leading to an overall increase in the average gas density and excitation temperature, as well as an elevated [Ci](2–1) luminosity-to-far-infrared-luminosity ratio.
