Abstract The chemical stability of 2D MXene nanosheets in aqueous dispersions must be maintained to foster their widespread application. MXene nanosheets react with water, which results in the degradation of their 2D structure into oxides and carbon residues. The latter detrimentally restricts the shelf life of MXene dispersions and devices. However, the mechanism of MXene degradation in aqueous environment has yet to be fully understood. In this work, the oxidation kinetics is investigated of Ti3C2Txand Ti2CTxin aqueous media as a function of initial pH values, ionic strengths, and nanosheet concentrations. The pH value of the dispersion is found to change with time as a result of MXene oxidation. Specifically, MXene oxidation is accelerated in basic media by their reaction with hydroxyl anions. It is also demonstrated that oxidation kinetics are strongly dependent on nanosheet dispersion concentration, in which oxidation is accelerated for lower MXene concentrations. Ionic strength does not strongly affect MXene oxidation. The authors also report that citric acid acts as an effective antioxidant and mitigates the oxidation of both Ti3C2Txand Ti2CTxMXenes. Reactive molecular dynamic simulations suggest that citric acid associates with the nanosheet edge to hinder the initiation of oxidation.

Computational evaluation of structural and chemical possibilities exposed by Ti 2 CT x nanoribbons and 2D-nanoparticles
MXenes are a rapidly expanding family of 2D materials known for their unique tunability, yet studies of their edges remain sparse compared to their better-characterized basal planes.

On L 1 -Embeddability of Unions of L 1 -Embeddable Metric Spaces and of Twisted Unions of HypercubesAbstract We study properties of twisted unions of metric spaces introduced in [Johnson, Lindenstrauss, and Schechtman 1986], and in [Naor and Rabani 2017]. In particular, we prove that under certain natural mild assumptions twisted unions of L 1 -embeddable metric spaces also embed in L 1 with distortions bounded above by constants that do not depend on the metric spaces themselves, or on their size, but only on certain general parameters. This answers a question stated in [Naor 2015] and in [Naor and Rabani 2017]. In the second part of the paper we give new simple examples of metric spaces such that their every embedding into L p , 1 ≤ p < ∞, has distortion at least 3, but which are a union of two subsets, each isometrically embeddable in L p . This extends the result of [K. Makarychev and Y. Makarychev 2016] from Hilbert spaces to L p -spaces, 1 ≤ p < ∞.more » « less

Abstract This study presents a thorough analysis of the electronic structures of the TaPxAs1−xseries of compounds, which are of significant interest due to their potential as topological materials. Using a combination of first principles and Wannier‐based tight‐binding methods, this study investigates both the bulk and surface electronic structures of the compounds for varying compositions (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1), with a focus on their topological properties. By using chirality analysis, (111) surface electronic structure analysis, and surface Fermi arcs analysis, it is established that the TaPxAs1−xcompounds exhibit topologically nontrivial behavior, characterized as Weyl semimetals (WSMs). The effect of spin–orbit coupling (SOC) on the topological properties of the compounds is further studied. In the absence of SOC, the compounds exhibit linearly dispersive fourfold degenerate points in the first Brillouin zone (FBZ) resembling Dirac semimetals. However, the introduction of SOC induces a phase transition to WSM states, with the number and position of Weyl points (WPs) varying depending on the composition of the alloy. For example, TaP has 12 WPs in the FBZ. The findings provide novel insights into the electronic properties of TaPxAs1−xcompounds and their potential implications for the development of topological materials for various technological applications.more » « less

We determine the composition dependence of the transverse and longitudinal optical infrared-active phonon modes in rhombohedral α-(AlxGa1−x)2O3alloys by far-infrared and infrared generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry. Single-crystalline high quality undoped thin-films grown on m-plane oriented α-Al2O3substrates with x = 0.18, 0.37, and 0.54 were investigated. A single mode behavior is observed for all phonon modes, i.e., their frequencies shift gradually between the equivalent phonon modes of the isostructural binary parent compounds. We also provide physical model line shape functions for the anisotropic dielectric functions. We use the anisotropic high-frequency dielectric constants for polarizations parallel and perpendicular to the lattice c axis measured recently by Hilfiker et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 119, 092103 (2021)], and we determine the anisotropic static dielectric constants using the Lyddane–Sachs–Teller relation. The static dielectric constants can be approximated by linear relationships between those of α-Ga2O3and α-Al2O3. The optical phonon modes and static dielectric constants will become useful for device design and free charge carrier characterization using optical techniques.more » « less
