Abstract We investigate the dynamics responsible for generating the potential of theη′, the (would-be) Goldstone boson associated with the anomalous axial U(1) symmetry of QCD. The standard lore posits that pure QCD dynamics generates a confining potential with a branched structure as a function of theθangle, and that this same potential largely determines the properties of theη′once fermions are included. Here we test this picture by examining a supersymmetric extension of QCD with a small amount of supersymmetry breaking generated via anomaly mediation. For pure SU(N) QCD without flavors, we verify that there areNbranches generated by gaugino condensation. Once quarks are introduced, the flavor effects qualitatively change the strong dynamics of the pure theory. ForFflavors we find |N − F| branches, whose dynamical origin is gaugino condensation in the unbroken subgroup forF < N –1, and in the dual gauge group forF > N+ 1. For the special cases ofF=N –1,N,N+ 1 we find no branches and the entire potential is consistent with being a one-instanton effect. The number of branches is a simple consequence of the selection rules of an anomalous U(1)Rsymmetry. We find that theη′mass does not vanish in the largeNlimit for fixedF/N, since the anomaly is non-vanishing. The same dynamics that is responsible for theη′potential is also responsible for the axion potential. We present a simple derivation of the axion mass formula for an arbitrary number of flavors.

Abstract We show that near the edges of the conformal window of supersymmetric SU(Nc) QCD, perturbed by Anomaly Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking (AMSB), chiral symmetry can be broken depending on the initial conditions of the RG flow. We do so by perturbatively expanding around Banks-Zaks fixed points and taking advantage of Seiberg duality. Interpolating between the edges of the conformal window, we predict that non-supersymmetric QCD breaks chiral symmetry up toNf≤ 3Nc− 1, while we cannot say anything definitive forNf≥ 3Ncat this moment.

Abstract We study 1 + 1-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory coupled to one adjoint multiplet of Majorana fermions on a small spatial circle of circumferenceL. Using periodic boundary conditions, we derive the effective action for the quantum mechanics of the holonomy and the fermion zero modes in perturbation theory up to order (gL)3. When the adjoint fermion mass-squared is tuned tog2N/(2π), the effective action is found to be an example of supersymmetric quantum mechanics with a nontrivial superpotential. We separate the states into theℤNcenter symmetry sectors (universes) labeled byp= 0, . . . ,N– 1 and show that in one of the sectors the supersymmetry is unbroken, while in the others it is broken spontaneously. These results give us new insights into the (1, 1) supersymmetry of adjoint QCD2, which has previously been established using light-cone quantization. When the adjoint mass is set to zero, our effective Hamiltonian does not depend on the fermions at all, so that there are 2N−1degenerate sectors of the Hilbert space. This construction appears to provide an explicit realization of the extended symmetry of the massless model, where there are 22N−2operators that commute with the Hamiltonian. We also generalize our results to other gauge groupsG, for which supersymmetry is found at the adjoint mass-squaredg2h∨/(2π), whereh∨is the dual Coxeter number ofG.more » « less

Abstract Inside a medium, showers originating from a very high energy particle develop via medium-induced splitting processes such as bremsstrahlung and pair production. During shower development, two consecutive splittings sometimes overlap quantum mechanically, so that they cannot be treated independently. Some of these effects can be absorbed into an effective value of a medium parameter known as$$ \hat{q} $$ . Previous calculations (with certain simplifying assumptions) have found that, after adjusting the value of$$ \hat{q} $$ , the leftover effect of overlapping splittings is quite small for purely gluonic large-Ncshowers but is very much larger for large-NfQED showers, at comparable values ofNα. Here, by investigating the same problem for QCDwith quarksin the large-Nflimit of many quark flavors, we make a first study of whether the small effect in purely gluonic showers (i) was merely an accident or (ii) is more broadly characteristic of such overlap effects in QCD. We also offer a qualitative explanation for the large size of the effect in QED vs. QCD.more » « less

Abstract We combine supersymmetric localization with the numerical conformal bootstrap to bound the scaling dimension and OPE coefficient of the lowest-dimension unprotected operator in$$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 SU(N) super-Yang-Mills theory for a wide range ofNand Yang-Mills couplingsgYM. We find that our bounds are approximately saturated by weak coupling results at smallgYM. Furthermore, at largeNour bounds interpolate between integrability results for the Konishi operator at smallgYMand strong-coupling results, including the first few stringy corrections, for the lowest-dimension double-trace operator at largegYM. In particular, our scaling dimension bounds describe the level splitting between the single- and double-trace operators at intermediate coupling.more » « less

Abstract We use medium-resolution Keck/Echellette Spectrograph and Imager spectroscopy of bright quasars to study cool gas traced by Caiiλλ3934, 3969 and Naiλλ5891, 5897 absorption in the interstellar/circumgalactic media of 21 foreground star-forming galaxies at redshifts 0.03 <z< 0.20 with stellar masses 7.4 ≤ logM*/M⊙≤ 10.6. The quasar–galaxy pairs were drawn from a unique sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar spectra with intervening nebular emission, and thus have exceptionally close impact parameters (R⊥< 13 kpc). The strength of this line emission implies that the galaxies’ star formation rates (SFRs) span a broad range, with several lying well above the star-forming sequence. We use Voigt profile modeling to derive column densities and component velocities for each absorber, finding that column densitiesN(Caii) > 1012.5cm−2(N(Nai) > 1012.0cm−2) occur with an incidencefC(Caii) = 0.63+0.10−0.11(fC(Nai) = 0.57+0.10−0.11). We find no evidence for a dependence offCor the rest-frame equivalent widthsWr(CaiiK) orWr(Nai5891) onR⊥orM*. Instead,Wr(CaiiK) is correlated with local SFR at >3σsignificance, suggesting that Caiitraces star formation-driven outflows. While most of the absorbers have velocities within ±50 km s−1of the host redshift, their velocity widths (characterized by Δv90) are universally 30–177 km s−1larger than that implied by tilted-ring modeling of the velocities of interstellar material. These kinematics must trace galactic fountain flows and demonstrate that they persist atR⊥> 5 kpc. Finally, we assess the relationship between dust reddening andWr(CaiiK) (Wr(Nai5891)), finding that 33% (24%) of the absorbers are inconsistent with the best-fit Milky WayE(B−V)-Wrrelations at >3σsignificance.more » « less
