Our project aims to provide a snapshot of the possibilities of Augmented Reality (AR) art creation using Abobe Aero within a limited timeframe, offering participants a taste of their creative potential within augmented reality. We introduce different types of audiences, ranging from middle schoolers to college students, to the world of AR via several workshops. We plan to survey our audiences, then analyze the results of these surveys and present the results of our endeavor in our poster.

Teaching Art Creation with Augmented Reality
Our project aims to provide a snapshot of the possibilities of Augmented Reality (AR) art creation within a limited timeframe. It offers participants a way to express their creativity. We introduce college students to the world of AR via several workshops. Here we present the results of these workshops. Our audience understood how to create 3D models and how to use them in an augmented reality environment. Participants also found our workshop fun and engaging and that it expanded their interest in these new technologies.

null (Ed.)Augmented reality (AR) applications are growing in popularity in educational settings. While the effects of AR experiences on learning have been widely studied, there is relatively less research on understanding the impact of AR on the dynamics of co-located collaborative learning, specifically in the context of novices programming robots. Educational robotics are a powerful learning context because they engage students with problem solving, critical thinking, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) concepts, and collaboration skills. However, such collaborations can suffer due to students having unequal access to resources or dominant peers. In this research we investigate how augmented reality impacts learning and collaboration while peers engage in robot programming activities. We use a mixed methods approach to measure how participants are learning, manipulating resources, and engaging in problem solving activities with peers. We investigate how these behaviors are impacted by the presence of augmented reality visualizations, and by participants? proximity to resources. We find that augmented reality improved overall group learning and collaboration. Detailed analysis shows that AR strongly helps one participant more than the other, by improving their ability to learn and contribute while remaining engaged with the robot. Furthermore, augmented reality helps both participants maintain a common ground and balance contributions during problem solving activities. We discuss the implications of these results for designing AR and non-AR collaborative interfaces.more » « less

This study examines the ergonomic impact of augmented reality (AR) technologies in educational contexts, with a focus on understanding how prolonged AR engagement affects postural dynamics and physical demands on users. By analyzing slouching scores alongside NASA Task Load Index (TLX) Physical Demand (PD) values, we assess the physical strain experienced by participants during the initial modules of an AR-based lecture series. Our findings demonstrate a notable decline in slouching scores as participants progress through the lecture modules, indicating increased postural deviations. To quantify these effects, we developed a regression model that effectively predicts the physical demands imposed by various AR modules, based on the observed slouching scores.more » « less

As applications for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology increase, it will be important to understand how users perceive their action capabilities in virtual environments. Feedback about actions may help to calibrate perception for action opportunities (affordances) so that action judgments in VR and AR mirror actors’ real abilities. Previous work indicates that walking through a virtual doorway while wielding an object can calibrate the perception of one’s passability through feedback from collisions. In the current study, we aimed to replicate this calibration through feedback using a different paradigm in VR while also testing whether this calibration transfers to AR. Participants held a pole at 45°and made passability judgments in AR (pretest phase). Then, they made passability judgments in VR and received feedback on those judgments by walking through a virtual doorway while holding the pole (calibration phase). Participants then returned to AR to make posttest passability judgments. Results indicate that feedback calibrated participants’ judgments in VR. Moreover, this calibration transferred to the AR environment. In other words, after experiencing feedback in VR, passability judgments in VR and in AR became closer to an actor’s actual ability, which could make training applications in these technologies more effective.more » « less

Immersive environments enable users to engage in embodied interaction, enhancing the sensemaking processes involved in completing tasks such as immersive analytics. Previous comparative studies on immersive analytics using augmented and virtual realities have revealed that users employ different strategies for data interpretation and text-based analytics depending on the environment. Our study seeks to investigate how augmented and virtual reality influences sensemaking processes in quantitative immersive analytics. Our results, derived from a diverse group of participants, indicate that users demonstrate comparable performance in both environments. However, it was observed that users exhibit a higher tolerance for cognitive load in VR and travel further in AR. Based on our findings, we recommend providing users with the option to switch between AR and VR, thereby enabling them to select an environment that aligns with their preferences and task requirements.more » « less
