Title: Teaching Art Creation with Augmented Reality and Aero
Our project aims to provide a snapshot of the possibilities of Augmented Reality (AR) art creation using Abobe Aero within a limited timeframe, offering participants a taste of their creative potential within augmented reality. We introduce different types of audiences, ranging from middle schoolers to college students, to the world of AR via several workshops. We plan to survey our audiences, then analyze the results of these surveys and present the results of our endeavor in our poster.  more » « less

  1. Augmented Reality (AR) in human rights museums and memorialization efforts can empower these initiatives to create stronger connections between audiences and victims; however, there is little research on the risks of depicting sensitive narratives through immersive technologies. We examined the opportunities and challenges of applying AR to memorialization by designing and deploying an AR application with a human rights museum in Colombia. We report lessons from our collaboration about navigating the risk of re-victimizing testimonial authors while creating engaging AR interactions. Furthermore, we report on a user study where participants interacted with our museum exhibition. Based on observations of our co-design process and the user study results, we discuss implications for immersive application design with strategies for selecting immersive content, balancing audience engagement, and identifying technology gaps. Finally, we reflect on the implications for collaborations between HCI researchers, human rights professionals, and organizations to inform designs involving sensitive narratives.

  2. Our project aims to provide a snapshot of the possibilities of Augmented Reality (AR) art creation within a limited timeframe. It offers participants a way to express their creativity. We introduce college students to the world of AR via several workshops. Here we present the results of these workshops. Our audience understood how to create 3D models and how to use them in an augmented reality environment. Participants also found our workshop fun and engaging and that it expanded their interest in these new technologies.

  3. Augmented and Virtual Reality technologies enable powerful forms of spatial interaction with a wide range of digital information. While AR and VR headsets are more affordable today than they have ever been, their interfaces are relatively unfamiliar, and a large majority of people around the world do not yet have access to such devices. Inspired by contemporary research towards cross-reality systems that support interactions between mobile and head-mounted devices, we have been exploring the potential of mobile devices to bridge the gap between spatial collaboration and wider availability. In this paper, we outline the development of a cross-reality collaborative experience centered around mobile phones. Nearly fifty users interacted with the experience over a series of research demo days in our lab. We use the initial insights gained from these demonstrations to discuss potential research directions for bringing spatial computing and cross-reality collaboration to wider audiences in the near future.

  4. Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that integrates 3D virtual objects into the physical world in real-time, while virtual reality (VR) is a technology that immerses users in an interactive 3D virtual environment. The fast development of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies has reshaped how people interact with the physical world. This presentation will outline the results from two unique AR and one Web-based VR coastal engineering projects, motivating the next stage in the development of the augmented reality package for coastal students, engineers, and planners.

Augmented Reality (AR) is becoming readily more available as the number of AR capable smartphones and tablets increase in popularity. With its exponential development, augmented reality offers an oppurtunity to facilitate education in online chemistry. In hopes of furthering the advancement of augmented reality in online chemistry education, we developed a boiling water experiment to show the effects of heat capacity and to create an interactive lab experiment for online learning. Our work-in-progress paper explores how the utilization of augmented reality can improve the learning process and better exhibit chemistry lab concepts.
