Title: From the Community to the Classroom: Public and Global Health Perspectives on Heart Disease
Community-centered projects on health and the environment are vital for inclusive and equitable student learning. One of the ways to engage STEM and humanities undergraduates on public and global health and environmental justice topics is using a framework called community-based participatory research (CBPR). CBPR provides a framework for culturally relevant and responsive environmental or health topics through community engagement. In our feature article, we provide background on public and global health perspectives related to heart disease, and showcase how CBPR can be woven into the introduction to biology class and lab as a pathways to engage and empower students from all disciplines on developing a community awareness project.  more » « less

  1. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is a framework to improve social equity by engaging communities as equal partners in research design, conduct, and knowledge creation. While CBPR has seen increasing application in Arctic regions, its use in Greenland has been limited by logistical, linguistic, and historical challenges, including community fatigue from extractive research practices. This manuscript details a CBPR-informed approach used to conduct an exploratory study on fertility, reproductive health, and climate adaptation in the Kalaallit community of Paamiut. The study aimed to understand the socio-environmental factors influencing fertility decisions amid economic and environmental changes. We report on nine strategies used to conduct equitable health and socio-ecological research in Greenland guided by the principles of CBPR. Using CBPR principles improved trust, participant recruitment, and the creation of community-valued research products in Paamiut. While time and funding limitations constrained full implementation of CBPR best practices, this study highlights the potential of CBPR to improve equity in Greenlandic research. Using CBPR principles to guide community-engaged research in Greenland provides a concrete and actionable way for students or early-career researchers to promote equitable relationships despite resource limitations. The methods described can be applied across other research disciplines to continue building trust and sustainability in international research partnerships in Greenland.

Over the past two decades, scientific research on the connections between the health and resilience of marine ecosystems and human health, well-being, and community prosperity has expanded and evolved into a distinct “metadiscipline” known as Oceans and Human Health (OHH), recognized by the scientific community as well as policy makers. OHH goals are diverse and seek to improve public health outcomes, promote sustainable use of aquatic systems and resources, and strengthen community resilience. OHH research has historically included some level of community outreach and partner involvement; however, the increasing disruption of aquatic environments and urgency of public health impacts calls for a more systematic approach to effectively identify and engage with community partners to achieve project goals and outcomes. Herein, we present a strategic framework developed collaboratively by community engagement personnel from the four recently established U.S. Centers for Oceans and Human Health (COHH). This framework supports researchers in defining levels of community engagement and in aligning partners, purpose, activities, and approaches intentionally in their community engagement efforts. Specifically, we describe: (a) a framework for a range of outreach and engagement approaches; (b) the need for identifying partners, purpose, activities, and approaches; and (c) the importance of making intentional alignment among them. Misalignment across these dimensions may lead to wasting time or resources, eroding public trust, or failing to achieve intended outcomes. We illustrate the framework with examples from current COHH case studies and conclude with future directions for strategic community engagement in OHH and other environmental health contexts.

American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities experience notable health disparities associated with substance use, including disproportionate rates of accidents/injuries, diabetes, liver disease, suicide, and substance use disorders. Effective treatments for substance use are needed to improve health equity for AI/ AN communities. However, an unfortunate history of unethical and stigmatizing research has engendered distrust and reluctance to participate in research among many Native communities. In recent years, researchers have made progress toward engaging in ethical health disparities research by using a community-based participatory research (CBPR) framework to work in close partnership with community members throughout the research process. In this methodological process paper, we discuss the collaborative development of a quantitative survey aimed at understanding risk and protective factors for substance use among a sample of tribal members residing on a rural AI reservation with numerous systems-level barriers to recovery and limited access to treatment. By using a CBPR approach and prioritizing trust and transparency with community partners and participants, we were able to successfully recruit our target sample and collect quality data from nearly 200 tribal members who self-identified as having a substance use problem. Strategies for enhancing buy-in and recruiting a community sample are discussed.

  5. Synopsis Public health researchers have long been aware of the importance of defining the human community associated with research on environmental health initiatives. However, the field community’s human components where applied ecology research is conducted, e.g. diverse participants and perspectives, are often overlooked in environmental problem solving. We outline a framework for elevating the human dimension in defining the field community in applied ecology research and for teaching diverse undergraduate students the skills needed to address Anthropocene environmental concerns. We promote broadening participation and incorporating cultural and racial perspectives in ecology research planning, implementation, and teaching. We use the environmental research problem of concern to identify the diverse human community groups potentially connected to the problem and guide the strategies for incorporating their perspectives in the proposed research project. Which human community, whether local, ethnic, or visiting public community, affects the resource management strategy, i.e. people protect what they love, can change the outcomes of applied ecological research, as well as promote development of a diverse environmental workforce. Broadening participation and perspectives means that the people asking the research questions are also part of the social ecological community processes who choose which questions to pursue to manage the natural resources of the community. Here, we promote research and teaching practices that consider the long-standing multicultural connections to nature to allow all students to pursue their love of nature and its beauty in a safe, comfortable, and mentoring setting. We integrate current human diversity, equity, and inclusion-focused pedagogical knowledge into the Ecological Society of America-endorsed 4DEE multidimensional curricular framework. We provide a faculty action guide to engage and train diverse students in ecological practices that meet the needs of today’s environmental problem-solving workforce.
