Title: Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Litter and soil radiocarbon and selective metal measurements from Bear Brook, 1998–2023
Radiocarbon time series of archived litter and soil samples from Bear Brook (west of watershed 6) at lower elevation from 1998 to 2023. Additional measurements include total carbon and nitrogen for all samples, and selective dissolution metal concentrations for the Oa/A and mineral soil layers. Selective dissolution metals include pyrophosphate-extractable aluminum (Al); iron (Fe), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and manganese (Mn); oxalate-extractable Al, Fe, Ca, Mg, and Mn; and dithionite-extractable Al, Fe, Ca, Mg, and Mn. All samples are from the Microbial Biomass and Activity Sampling Effort (Groffman and Martel, 2025, https://doi.org/10.6073/pasta/aff4a2074fd56102f62f13a19ce46f2d). These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the US Forest Service, Northern Research Station.  more » « less

  1. {"Abstract":["This data set includes chemistry of O-horizons ("forest floor") and the 0-10 cm \nmineral soil layer in Watershed 1 at Hubbard Book. Calcium in the form of wollastonite \n(CaSiO3) was added to Watershed 1 in October 1999. The application rate was 1028 kg \nCa per ha, and the application was relatively uniform across the watershed. Pre-treatment \nforest floor surveys were completed in 1996 and 1998. The first post-treatment forest \nfloor survey was completed in 2000. This data set includes mass and thickness data for \nthe sampled layers. Chemical data include concentrations and pools of organic matter, \nC, N, Ca, Mg, K, P, Mn, Fe, Al, Cu, Pb, and Zn. Soil pH and exchangeable Al, Ca, Mg, K, \nand H are also included. Sampling is intended to continue at 4 or 5 year intervals.\n These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). \nThe HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, \nwhich is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station."]}

  2. Soil element concentrations (Na, Mg, K, Ca, Al, Mn, Fe, Si, Sr, and Ba) were measured in salt exchangeable extracts of soil samples taken in July 2017 in the MELNHE study, specifically in Bartlett stands C1-C9 and Hubbard Brook stands HBM and HBO. Additional detail on the MELNHE project, including a datatable of site descriptions and a pdf file with the project description and diagram of plot configuration can be found in this data package: https://portal.edirepository.org/nis/mapbrowse?scope=knb-lter-hbr&identifier=344. Additional analysis data on these samples can be found in the dataset "Soil properties in the MELNHE study at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, Bartlett Experimental Forest and Jeffers Brook, central NH USA, 2009 - present" (https://portal.edirepository.org/nis/mapbrowse?scope=knb-lter-hbr&identifier=165). This work is a contribution of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study. Hubbard Brook is part of the LTER network, which is supported by the US National Science Foundation. The Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest is operated and maintained by the US Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

  3. This dataset consists of chemical analyses of subsurface water samples collected from Watershed 3, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, Woodstock, NH, USA from 2009-2015. Samples include groundwater samples pumped from monitoring wells, grab samples of natural groundwater seeps, and soil water samples pumped from Prenart lysimeters. For samples from wells where water table was monitored, depth to water table is given. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
