Title: Water chemistry in streams and precipitation samples in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, 2022-2023
Water samples have been collected for chemical analysis at various locations in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, starting in 2022. The database includes grab samples gathered approximately weekly in selected streams and bulk precipitation collected at the PRIMET meteorological station. Samples were analyzed for cations (Si4+, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and Na+) and anions (Cl- and SO42-).  more » « less

  1. This data set includes nutrient measurements of water samples collected at hydrographic stations from the Research Vessel (R/V) Sikuliaq during the Arctic Chief Scientist Training cruise June 6–12, 2023 sponsored by the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) Arctic Icebreaker Coordinating Committee and the National Science Foundation. SKQ202309T was utilized as a training expedition for early-career Arctic oceanographers, focusing on skills essential for leading research cruises. Training topics centered on logistics, how to request time on ships, how to coordinate personnel and equipment, how to plan for operations and survey tasks at sea, how to work with vessel crew and staff, and how to edit research plans based on field conditions. Participants collected various data sets opportunistically throughout the research training. The cruise transited from Seward to Nome and water samples were collected at six hydrographic stations for nutrients (this data set). Specifically, this data set contains nutrient (total dissolved phosphorus (TDP), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), phosphate, and nitrate+nitrite) measurements at surface and above seabed water depths. Bottle samples were collected in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) bottles which were rinsed at least three times before filling. The bottles were frozen at -40 Celsius (C).

  2. This dataset contains species abundance data of epilithic diatoms collected from the Upper Kuparuk River, Alaska (USA), spanning from 1997 to 2022. The dataset is part of a long-term study aimed at understanding the ecological impacts of phosphorus enrichment in Arctic freshwater ecosystems. Samples were collected annually from the river to examine if physical, chemical, biological, weather, and climate variables influence diatom community composition over time. The dataset includes detailed records of diatom species identified and their relative abundances ins the reference reach only. Analyses of this dataset using permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA), canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), and partial canonical correspondence analysis (pCCA) . Analyses reveal significant shifts in diatom community composition over time, closely linked to changes in alkalinity, nitrate + nitrite, total dissolved phosphorus, dissolved organic carbon, and wind speed. We identify specific diatom taxa as bioindicators, highlighting their sensitivity to shifts in alkalinity, nitrate + nitrite, and wind speed. This dataset provides valuable insights on how climate change is reshaping the structure and function of Arctic rivers, underscoring the importance of diatoms as bioindicators in Arctic ecosystems. It serves as an important resource for researchers studying nutrient dynamics, ecological monitoring, and the impacts of climate change on Arctic freshwater systems.

  3. The Lake Mendota Microbial Observatory collects routine water physical and chemical measurements alongside their microbial samples. This dataset includes measurements of water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and conductivity collected at the central Deep Hole, collocated with a weather buoy (43°05'58.2"N 89°24'16.2"W). All measurements were collected with handheld probes. Data from 2006-2014 was compiled from multiple sources and includes only water temperature and dissolved oxygen. Data from 2014-2019 is from the same probe, a YSI Pro Plus instrument, and also includes pH and specific conductance. Routine microbial observatory sampling continues into the present.

  4. Samples for the analysis of dissolved nutrients were collected during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) from the water column, sea ice cores and from special events/locations (e.g., leads, melt ponds, brine, incubation experiments). Samples for dissolved inorganic nutrients (NO3 +NO2 , NO2 , PO4 , Si(OH)4, NH4 ) were analysed onboard during PS122 legs 1 to 3, with duplicate samples collected from CTD casts for later analysis of total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) and total dissolved phosphorus (TDP). From leg 4, all samples collected were stored frozen at -20°C for later analysis. Analyses of stored samples were carried out at the AWI Nutrient Facility between January and March 2021. Nutrient analyses onboard and on land were carried out using a Seal Analytical AA3 continuous flow autoanalyser, controlled by the AACE software version 7.09. Best practice procedures for the measurement of nutrients were adopted following GO-SHIP recommendations (Hydes et al., 2010; Becker et al., 2019). Descriptions of sample collection and handling can be found in the various cruise reports (Haas & Rabe, 2023; Kanzow & Damm, 2023; Rex & Metfies, 2023; Rex & Nicolaus, 2023; Rex & Shupe, 2023). Here we provide data from the water column, obtained from the analysis of discrete samples collected from CTD-Rosette casts from Polarstern (https://sensor.awi.de/?site=search&q=vessel:polarstern:ctd_sbe9plus_321) and Ocean City (https://sensor.awi.de/?site=search&q=vessel:polarstern:ctd_sbe9plus_935). Data from sea ice cores and special events are presented elsewhere. Data from sea ice cores and special events are presented elsewhere. For reference, here we included data from CTD-BTL files associated with nutrient samples. These data are presented by Tippenhauer et al. (2023) Polarstern CTD and Tippenhauer et al. (2023) Ocean City CTD.
