Title: Vocal pitch enables differential motor learning of speech segments
Previous work shows that sensorimotor learning can be specific to different motor contexts, but to date, this research has only examined contexts provided by the same effector as the learning target or its contralateral pair. We show that laryngeal movements for pitch enable differentiated learning of oral articulator movements for vowels, even when the pitch is linguistically meaningless. This indicates that motor contexts that enable learning can be generated by effectors distinct from those that undergo learning.  more » « less

  1. Precise timing underlies many behaviors, from musical performance to navigating a dynamic environment. This study examined how stable temporal patterns that emerge during goal-directed movements influence timing acuity in perceptual discrimination. Rather than relying on explicitly timed actions, we used a selfpaced throwing task in which temporal structure develops implicitly with practice. Across three experiments, participants were trained for four days, developing stable motor timing reflected in consistent ‘‘ball release times.’’ This emergent timing selectively enhanced sensitivity to matching temporal intervals in a perceptual discrimination task. Importantly, this effect was not explained by perceptual learning and persisted over several weeks, suggesting a durable motor-perceptual linkage. The results point to a shared representation of time in action and perception, an emergent timing primitive that arises through experience in spatiotemporal movements. These findings shed light on how motor learning can shape temporal perception in ecologically relevant contexts, with implications for rehabilitation and sensorimotor integration.

Most sensorimotor studies investigating the covariation of populations of neurons in primary motor cortex (M1) have considered only a few trained movements made under highly constrained conditions. However, motor behaviors in daily living happen in a far more complex and varied contexts. It is unclear whether M1 neurons would have different population responses in a more naturalistic, unconstrained setting, including requirements to accommodate multiple limbs and body posture, and more extensive proprioceptive inputs. Here, we recorded M1 spiking signals while a monkey performed hand grasp movements in two different contexts: one in the typical constrained lab setting, and the other while moving freely in a large plastic cage. We compared the covariance patterns of the neural activity during movements across the two contexts. We found that the neural covariation patterns accompanying two different hand grasps in the unconstrained context were largely preserved, while they differed across contexts, even for the same type of grasp. We also found that the M1 population activity was confined to context-dependent neural manifolds, but these manifolds were not completely independent, as some dimensions appeared to be shared across the contexts. These results suggest that the coordinated activity of M1 neurons is strongly dependent on behavioral context, in ways that were not entirely anticipated.

  3. Sensorimotor tasks that humans perform are often affected by different sources of uncertainty. Nevertheless, the central nervous system (CNS) can gracefully coordinate our movements. Most learning frameworks rely on the internal model principle, which requires a precise internal representation in the CNS to predict the outcomes of our motor commands. However, learning a perfect internal model in a complex environment over a short period of time is a nontrivial problem. Indeed, achieving proficient motor skills may require years of training for some difficult tasks. Internal models alone may not be adequate to explain the motor adaptation behavior during the early phase of learning. Recent studies investigating the active regulation of motor variability, the presence of suboptimal inference, and model-free learning have challenged some of the traditional viewpoints on the sensorimotor learning mechanism. As a result, it may be necessary to develop a computational framework that can account for these new phenomena. Here, we develop a novel theory of motor learning, based on model-free adaptive optimal control, which can bypass some of the difficulties in existing theories. This new theory is based on our recently developed adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) and robust ADP (RADP) methods and is especially useful for accounting for motor learning behavior when an internal model is inaccurate or unavailable. Our preliminary computational results are in line with experimental observations reported in the literature and can account for some phenomena that are inexplicable using existing models.

  4. ABSTRACT Flying insects solve a daunting control problem of generating a patterned and precise motor program to stay airborne and generate agile maneuvers. In this motor program, each muscle encodes information about movement in precise spike timing down to the millisecond scale. Whereas individual muscles share information about movement, we do not know whether they have separable effects on an animal's motion, or whether muscles functionally interact such that the effects of any muscle's timing depend heavily on the state of the entire musculature. To answer these questions, we performed spike-resolution electromyography and electrical stimulation in the hawkmoth Manduca sexta during tethered flapping. We specifically explored how flight power muscles contribute to pitch control. Combining correlational study of visually induced turns with causal manipulation of spike timing, we discovered likely coordination patterns for pitch turns, and investigated whether these patterns can drive pitch control. We observed significant timing change of the main downstroke muscles, the dorsolongitudinal muscles (DLMs), associated with pitch turns. Causally inducing this timing change in the DLMs with electrical stimulation produced a consistent, mechanically relevant feature in pitch torque, establishing that power muscles in M. sexta have a control role in pitch. Because changes were evoked in only the DLMs, however, these pitch torque features left large unexplained variation. We found this unexplained variation indicates significant functional overlap in pitch control such that precise timing of one power muscle does not produce a precise turn, demonstrating the importance of coordination across the entire motor program for flight.

This study employed the N400 event-related potential (ERP) to investigate how observing different types of gestures at learning affects the subsequent processing of L2 Mandarin words differing in lexical tone by L1 English speakers. The effects of pitch gestures conveying lexical tones (e.g., upwards diagonal movements for rising tone), semantic gestures conveying word meanings (e.g., waving goodbye for to wave), and no gesture were compared. In a lexical tone discrimination task, larger N400s for Mandarin target words mismatching vs. matching Mandarin prime words in lexical tone were observed for words learned with pitch gesture. In a meaning discrimination task, larger N400s for English target words mismatching vs. matching Mandarin prime words in meaning were observed for words learned with pitch and semantic gesture. These findings provide the first neural evidence that observing gestures during L2 word learning enhances subsequent phonological and semantic processing of learned L2 words.
