Title: A Spectral Atlas of Lyα Emitters at z = 5.7 and z = 6.6
Abstract We present two uniformly observed spectroscopic samples of Lyαemitters (LAEs; 127 atz= 5.7 and 82 atz= 6.6), which we use to investigate the evolution of the LAE population at these redshifts. The observations cover a large field (44 deg2) in the North Ecliptic Pole, as well as several smaller fields. We have a small number of exotic LAEs in the samples: double-peaked Lyαprofiles; very extended red wings; and one impressive lensed LAE cross. We also find three broad-line active galactic nuclei. We compare the Lyαline width measurements at the two redshifts, finding that the lower-luminosity LAEs show a strong evolution of decreasing line width with increasing redshift, while the high-luminosity LAEs do not, with a transition luminosity of logL(Lyα) ≈ 43.25 erg s−1. Thus, atz= 6.6, the high-luminosity LAEs may be producing large ionized bubbles themselves, or they may be residing in overdense galaxy sites that are producing such bubbles. In order to avoid losses in the red wing, the radius of the ionized bubble must be larger than 1 pMpc. The double-peaked LAEs also require transmission on the blue side. For the four atz= 6.6, we use models to estimate the proximity radii,Ra, where the ionizing flux of the galaxy is sufficient to make the surroundings have a low enough neutral fraction to pass the blue light. Since the requiredRaare large, multiple ionizing sources in the vicinity may be needed.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Recent evidence suggests that high-redshift Ly α emitting galaxies (LAEs) with log L ( Ly α ) > 43.5 erg s − 1 , referred to as ultraluminous LAEs (ULLAEs), may show less evolution than lower-luminosity LAEs in the redshift range z = 5.7–6.6. Here we explore the redshift evolution of the velocity widths of the Ly α emission lines in LAEs over this redshift interval. We use new wide-field, narrowband observations from Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam to provide a sample of 24 z = 6.6 and 12 z = 5.7 LAEs with log L ( Ly α ) > 43 erg s − 1 , all of which have follow-up spectroscopy from Keck/DEIMOS. Combining with archival lower-luminosity data, we find a significant narrowing of the Ly α lines in LAEs at log L ( Ly α ) < 43.25 erg s − 1 —somewhat lower than the usual ULLAE definition—at z = 6.6 relative to those at z = 5.7, but we do not see this in higher-luminosity LAEs. As we move to higher redshifts, the increasing neutrality of the intergalactic medium should increase the scattering of the Ly α lines, making them narrower. The absence of this effect in the higher-luminosity LAEs suggests they may lie in more highly ionized regions, self-shielding from the scattering effects of the intergalactic medium.

  2. Abstract Lyman-alpha-emitting galaxies (LAEs) are typically young, low-mass, star-forming galaxies with little extinction from interstellar dust. Their low dust attenuation allows their Lyαemission to shine brightly in spectroscopic and photometric observations, providing an observational window into the high-redshift Universe. Narrowband surveys reveal large, uniform samples of LAEs at specific redshifts that probe large-scale structure and the temporal evolution of galaxy properties. The One-hundred-deg2DECam Imaging in Narrowbands (ODIN) utilizes three custom-made narrowband filters on the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) to discover LAEs at three equally spaced periods in cosmological history. In this paper, we introduce the hybrid-weighted double-broadband continuum estimation technique, which yields improved estimation of Lyαequivalent widths. Using this method, we discover 6032, 5691, and 4066 LAE candidates atz= 2.4, 3.1, and 4.5 in the extended COSMOS field (∼9 deg2). We find that [Oii] emitters are a minimal contaminant in our LAE samples, but that interloping Green Pea–like [Oiii] emitters are important for our redshift 4.5 sample. We introduce an innovative method for identifying [Oii] and [Oiii] emitters via a combination of narrowband excess and galaxy colors, enabling their study as separate classes of objects. We present scaled median stacked spectral energy distributions for each galaxy sample, revealing the overall success of our selection methods. We also calculate rest-frame Lyαequivalent widths for our LAE samples and find that the EW distributions are best fit by exponential functions with scale lengths ofw0= 53 ± 1, 65 ± 1, and 59 ± 1 Å, respectively.

  3. Abstract We present the first results from the Web Epoch of Reionization LyαSurvey (WERLS), a spectroscopic survey of Lyαemission using Keck I/MOSFIRE and LRIS. WERLS targets bright (J< 26) galaxy candidates with photometric redshifts of 5.5 ≲z≲ 8 selected from pre-JWST imaging embedded in the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) within three JWST deep fields: CEERS, PRIMER, and COSMOS-Web. Here, we report 11z∼ 7–8 Lyαemitters (LAEs; three secure and eight tentative candidates) detected in the first five nights of WERLS MOSFIRE data. We estimate our observed LAE yield is ∼13%, which is broadly consistent with expectations assuming some loss from redshift uncertainty, contamination from sky OH lines, and that the Universe is approximately half-ionized at this epoch, whereby observable Lyαemission is unlikely for galaxies embedded in a neutral intergalactic medium. Our targets are selected to be UV-bright, and span a range of absolute UV magnitudes with −23.1 <MUV< −19.8. With two LAEs detected atz= 7.68, we also consider the possibility of an ionized bubble at this redshift. Future synergistic Keck+JWST efforts will provide a powerful tool for pinpointing beacons of reionization and mapping the large-scale distribution of mass relative to the ionization state of the Universe.

  4. Abstract We describe the ensemble properties of the 1.9 <z< 3.5 Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) found in the HETDEX survey’s first public data release, HETDEX Public Source Catalog 1. Stacking the low-resolution (R∼ 800) spectra greatly increases the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), revealing spectral features otherwise hidden by noise, and we show that the stacked spectrum is representative of an average member of the set. The flux-limited, LyαS/N restricted stack of 50,000 HETDEX LAEs shows the ensemble biweightaveragez∼ 2.6 LAE to be a blue (UV continuum slope ∼ −2.4 andE(B – V)< 0.1), moderately bright (MUV∼ −19.7) star-forming galaxy with strong Lyαemission (logLLyα∼ 42.8 andWλ(Lyα) ∼ 114 Å), and potentially significant leakage of ionizing radiation. The rest-frame UV light is dominated by a young, metal-poor stellar population with an average age of 5–15 Myr and metallicity of 0.2–0.3Z

Context.One of the surprising early findings with JWST has been the discovery of a strong “roll-over” or a softening of the absorption edge of Lyαin a large number of galaxies atz≳ 6, in addition to systematic offsets from photometric redshift estimates and fundamental galaxy scaling relations. This has been interpreted as strong cumulative damped Lyαabsorption (DLA) wings from high column densities of neutral atomic hydrogen (H I), signifying major gas accretion events in the formation of these galaxies. Aims.To explore this new phenomenon systematically, we assembled the JWST/NIRSpec PRImordial gas Mass AssembLy (PRIMAL) legacy survey of 584 galaxies atz = 5.0 − 13.4, designed to study the physical properties and gas in and around galaxies during the reionization epoch. Methods.We characterized this benchmark sample in full and spectroscopically derived the galaxy redshifts, metallicities, star formation rates, and ultraviolet (UV) slopes. We defined a new diagnostic, the Lyαdamping parameterDLyα, to measure and quantify the net effect of Lyαemission strength, the H Ifraction in the intergalactic medium, or the local H Icolumn density for each source. The JWST-PRIMAL survey is based on the spectroscopic DAWN JWST Archive (DJA-Spec). We describe DJA-Spec in this paper, detailing the reduction methods, the post-processing steps, and basic analysis tools. All the software, reduced spectra, and spectroscopically derived quantities and catalogs are made publicly available in dedicated repositories. Results.We find that the fraction of galaxies showing strong integrated DLAs withNHI > 1021 cm−2only increases slightly from ≈60% atz ≈ 6 up to ≈65 − 90% atz > 8. Similarly, the prevalence and prominence of Lyαemission is found to increase with decreasing redshift, in qualitative agreement with previous observational results. Strong Lyαemitters (LAEs) are predominantly found to be associated with low-metallicity and UV faint galaxies. By contrast, strong DLAs are observed in galaxies with a variety of intrinsic physical properties, but predominantly at high redshifts and low metallicities. Conclusions.Our results indicate that strong DLAs likely reflect a particular early assembly phase of reionization-era galaxies, at which point they are largely dominated by pristine H Igas accretion. Atz = 8 − 10, this gas gradually cools and forms into stars that ionize their local surroundings, forming large ionized bubbles and producing strong observed Lyαemission atz < 8.
