Title: On the genus Neoscotolemon (Opiliones: Laniatores: Samooidea incertae sedis) with the description of one new species
The genus Neoscotolemon Roewer, 1912, is herein reviewed and re-diagnosed for the first time using modern taxonomic standards. Neoscotolemon is removed from Grassatores incertae sedis and transferred to the superfamily Samooidea incertae sedis, transl. nov. The genera Citranus Goodnight & Goodnight, 1942, Rula Goodnight & Goodnight, 1942, and Vlachiolus Šilhavý, 1979, are considered new subjective synonyms of Neoscotolemon Roewer, 1912. Neoscotolemon pictipes (Banks, 1908) is redescribed and fully illustrated, including, for the first time, the external and genital morphology of males. Neoscotolemon armasi spec. nov. is described from Isla de la Juventud, Cuba. Five additional species are transferred to Neoscotolemon, including some that were newly ranked from subspecies to species: Neoscotolemon bolivari (Goodnight & Goodnight, 1945) comb. nov., stat. rest. (transferred from Stygnomma), N. cotilla (Goodnight & Goodnight, 1945) comb. nov., nom. rest., stat. rest. (transferred from Stygnomma), N. spinifer (Packard, 1888) comb. rest. (transferred from Stygnomma), N. tancahensis (Goodnight & Goodnight, 1951) comb. nov., stat. prom. (transferred from Stygnomma), and N. vojtechi (Šilhavý, 1979) comb. nov. (transferred from Vlachiolus). Finally, upon reexamination of Neoscotolemon lutzi Goodnight & Goodnight, 1942, the male genital morphology, herein illustrated for the first time, indicates that this species is not related to Neoscotolemon and is therefore transferred to Metapellobunus and combined as Metapellobunus lutzi (Goodnight & Goodnight, 1942) comb. nov. A map is provided showing the known distribution of Neoscotolemon in the southeastern USA, Cuba, Mexico, and Belize with doubtful and unconfirmed records in Jamaica and Cayman Islands. Neoscotolemon is characterized by multiple somatic and genitalic traits. Atop the hourglass-shaped scutum magnum, there is a widely-separated pair of eyes with a large spiniform apophysis placed between them. The pedipalps are robust, and in major males they are elongated and thickened. In major and minor males, the metatarsus III is enlarged, ventrally covered with modified trichomes, and possesses aggregated pores distally. The penis has a ventral plate ending in a deep calyx, armed with two bilateral rows of macrosetae, and a short, pointed stylus that is basally fused to two laminar conductors. Although the family allocation remains uncertain, the re-diagnosis of Neoscotolemon, together with the re-description of the type species, makes this an easily recognizable genus, among Samooidea, that now contains seven species.   more » « less

The taxonomic concept of the genus Machleida Fåhraeus, 1870 is tested and revised based on newly identified material. The following new species are described: Machleida banachi , M. flagstaffensis , M. tarskii , and M. zofiae Kamiński. Machleida capillosa Wilke, 1925 is considered as a junior subjective synonym of Asida devia Péringuey, 1899. Asida lecta Péringuey, 1899 (= Pseudomachla recurva Wilke, 1925) (transferred to Afrasida ), Machleida nossibiana Fairmaire, 1897 (transferred to Scotinesthes ), and Machleida tuberosa Wilke, 1925 (interpreted as incertae sedis in Asidini) are excluded from Machleida . An identification key for the species of the newly revised Machleida is provided. The present paper brings the total number of species within the genus to six ( M. banachi sp. nov. ; M. devia (Péringuey, 1899); M. flagstaffensis sp. nov. ; M. nodulosa Fåhraeus, 1870; M. tarskii sp. nov. ; M. zofiae Kamiński sp. nov. ). The morphology of female terminalia (ovipositor and genital tubes) is described for the genus for the first time.

The leafhopper genus Thaia Ghauri, 1962 and two related genera, Parathaia Kuoh, 1982 and Pseudothaia Kuoh, 1982, are revised. Nlunga Dworakowska, 1974, previously treated as a subgenus of Thaia, is elevated to the genus level, and Parathaia Kuoh, 1982, previously treated as a synonym of Thaia, is reinstated to valid status. The Oriental species lacking foveae on the pronotum are excluded from Nlunga and transferred to a new genus, Etmaria gen. n. Two species, Pseudothaia caudata Song & Li, 2013 and Thaia (Nlunga) leishanensis (Song & Li, 2007), are treated as Incertae sedis within Erythroneurini. Moreover, nine additional new species are described and illustrated: Nlunga parareeneni, Etmaria brevis, E. chaiyaphumica, E. dentata, E. indonesica, E. magna, E. triquetra, E. ulterior and Pseudothaia forcipis spp. nov.

Camponotus and Colobopsis are widely distributed and species-rich genera in the ant tribe Camponotini. Molecular phylogenetic studies demonstrate that they are not sister taxa, but several lineages within each genus have converged to a remarkable degree, confounding the taxonomy of these ants. Based on multiple lines of evidence, including worker and male morphology, we demonstrate that: (1) three species of “Camponotus” belonging to the subgenus Myrmotemnus, including its type species, are in fact members of the genus Colobopsis ; (2) four species previously assigned to Colobopsis belong to the subgenus Myrmamblys of Camponotus ; and (3) three Nearctic taxa recently placed in Colobopsis are members of the genus Camponotus and closely related to Camponotus clarithorax . These taxonomic findings yield the following new or revived combinations: Colobopsis moeschi ( comb. nov. ), Colobopsis moeschi lygaea ( comb. nov. ), Colobopsis nutans ( comb. nov. ), Colobopsis nutans cleliae ( comb. nov. ), and Colobopsis reichenspergeri ( comb. nov. ); Camponotus apostemata ( comb. nov. ), Camponotus aurelianus ( comb. rev. ), Camponotus cavibregma ( comb. nov. ), Camponotus horrens ( comb. rev. ), Camponotus politae ( comb. rev. ), Camponotus trajanus ( comb. rev. ), and Camponotus yogi ( comb. rev. ). A further consequence is the following generic synonymy (senior synonym listed first): Colobopsis = Myrmotemnus syn. nov. , and Camponotus = Dolophra syn. rev. At the species level, we argue that Camponotus apostemata and Camponotus cavibregma are junior synonyms ( syn. nov. ) of Camponotus yogi , and Camponotus quercicola is a junior synonym ( syn. nov. ) of Ca. laevigatus . Taxonomic comments are also provided on some members of the Camponotus reticulatus group, with Camponotus adustus ( stat. nov. ) and Ca. leucodiscus ( stat. rev. ) being recognized as distinct species rather than subspecies of Ca. bellus . A male-based diagnosis of the Camponotini is provided, and differences between the males of Colobopsis and Camponotus are documented and illustrated for the first time. This study reveals new character systems of potential value to the systematics of these ants, including features of the male genitalia, and emphasizes the value of reciprocal illumination between phylogenomics and critical morphological analysis.
