Title: Positioning K-8 Classroom Teachers as Mathematics Instructional Leaders
In this research report, we consider how to empower K-8 teachers as mathematics instructional leaders to initiate and sustain improvements within their schools, as a practical and sustainable model of enacting change in mathematics education more broadly by developing leadership from within. We share the theoretical framework and findings from a 5-year National Science Foundation project. We utilized a longitudinal mixed methods approach, collecting data on teachers’ knowledge, instructional practices, leadership practices, and self-perception of growth throughout the project, triangulated with focus group data from teachers’ school administrators and project leaders and logs of leadership activities. Findings indicate positive changes in teachers’ knowledge and practices and in their role as instructional leaders in their schools, districts, and the mathematics education community. We conclude by sharing factors that appeared to support teachers’ growth as instructional leaders and implications for practice and research.  more » « less

  1. The development and use of elementary mathematics specialists (EMSs) is an indispensable approach for improving mathematics instruction in schools. This holistic singular‐case study explored the teacher leadership of 26 EMSs across a three‐year period as they developed in their informal teacher leader role during a five‐year mathematics professional development program. To examine participants' teacher leader work and intended influences of these efforts, quantitative and qualitative data were collected. Findings of a teacher leader record show the prevalence, variability, audiences, and shifts in their teacher leader efforts, with the interview data illuminating complexity and extensions. In their advocacy for ambitious and equitable instruction, the EMSs sought to support students, families, teachers, administrators, and community members in particular ways. Shifts were observed as they became more comfortable with their roles and responsibilities as teacher leaders. They were increasingly positioned as holders of expertise within communities of practices in their schools, contributing to more influence in their settings. EMSs reported not only supporting teachers through leading professional development but advocating for students and best practices informally in ad hoc hallway conversations. Notably, the EMSs recognized expertise in fellow teachers and sought to elevate them as leaders.

  2. Abstract Teacher leaders influence their peers by introducing innovative instructional methods and enhancing teaching quality. They have proven invaluable to school principals as they prioritize comprehensive teacher development, bolster teacher effectiveness, and promote teacher retention. Despite their importance, little to no research—prior to the present study—has shed light on the development of teacher leaders and the evolution of their leadership identity. While science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teacher leaders offer a potential remedy for attrition in public schools, a substantial gap exists in understanding how a STEM teacher's self‐efficacy, values, and agency contribute to their transformation into effective STEM teacher leaders, especially in urban‐like learning environments. The present study focuses on STEM teacher leadership identity development and the challenges encountered. It ascertains the interplay between urban‐like learning environments, self‐efficacy, agency, the teacher leader's role within the school, and values in forecasting STEM teacher leadership identity. This research involved 100 in‐service PreK‐12 public school STEM teacher leaders. It yielded significant, positive, and meaningful relations between urban‐like learning environments, self‐efficacy/agency, teacher leader role, values, and STEM teacher leadership identity. These findings can enhance various facets of PreK‐12 STEM education, including educational programming, teacher training, and cultivating STEM teacher leadership.

  3. Abstract Mathematics teacher leaders may play an integral role in supporting change to address inequities in STEM education. To harness this potential, there is a need to identify effective professional development models that empower and motivate mathematics teacher leaders. We examine one such model focused on developing 30 K‐12 mathematics teacher leaders to support and expand teacher leadership within Nebraska, USA. Data analysis from interviews and surveys suggest that the project's focus on building and expanding teacher leaders' professional networks and increasing access to a variety of leadership opportunities contributed to a culture that empowered and motivated teacher leaders. Using the four frames model of organizational change in STEM, we identify several cultural features that contributed to the project's impact, including a cohort model connecting like‐minded educators that supported each other's efforts to enact changes; a distributed leadership philosophy that positioned participants as leaders within the project and at the university in which the project was situated; structural supports (e.g., funding, awards) for participants to engage in leadership; and a tailored approach to support participants based on their individual goals and vision for leadership. These findings have theoretical and practical implications for developing and supporting mathematics teacher leadership.

Abstract In this article, we examine how elementary classroom teachers who are pursuing their Elementary Mathematics Specialist certification—who we refer to as Elementary Mathematics Specialists in Training (EMSTs)—are positioned in their advice and information networks for mathematics. Analyzing the advice networks of six elementary schools in one district, we found that EMSTs were sought out by more individuals than other teachers, and when sought out by others, provided advice at a greater frequency than formal leaders. EMSTs' advice‐interactions were often with grade‐level peers, with interactions in the same grade occurring at a greater frequency than those spanning grade levels. We also found that, in the school with a formal mathematics‐specific leader, advice interactions were primarily directed at the formal leader, including the advice‐seeking of the EMSTs at that school. Based on our findings, we conclude with implications for how teacher education programs and school administrators can support mathematics teacher leaders in enacting leadership from their classrooms.

    This 5-year mathematics professional development project involves 27 elementary teachers being prepared and supported as Elementary Mathematics Specialists (EMSs) through completion of a university’s K-5 Mathematics and Teacher Supporting & Coaching Endorsement programs, as well as participation in Professional Learning Communities and individual mentoring. Across the project, data are gathered to examine changes in mathematical content knowledge, instructional and coaching practices, beliefs, and teacher leader skills of the EMSs. Described here are Year 1 data from the participants, who have been identified as successful, experienced teachers, focusing on specific aspects of teacher effectiveness. The findings illuminate their classroom instructional practices, including those that are learner-centered and equitable, along with their early histories as learners of mathematics.
