SUMMARY We present a new 3-D radially anisotropic seismic velocity model EARA2024 of the crust and mantle beneath East Asia and the northwestern Pacific using adjoint full-waveform inversion tomography. We construct the EARA2024 model by iteratively minimizing the waveform similarity misfit between the synthetic and observed waveforms from 142 earthquakes recorded by about 2000 broad-band stations in East Asia. Compared to previous studies, this new model renders significantly improved images of the subducted oceanic plate in the upper mantle, mantle transition zone, and uppermost lower mantle along the Kuril, Japan, Izu-Bonin and Ryukyu Trenches. Complex slab deformation and break-offs are observed at different depths. Moreover, our model provides new insights into the origins of intraplate volcanoes in East Asia, including the Changbaishan, Datong-Fengzhen, Tengchong and Hainan volcanic fields.more » « less

Ultraviolet photodissociation dynamics of 2-methylallyl radical from the 3p Rydberg state were investigated in the wavelength region of 226–244 nm using the high-n Rydberg atom time-of-flight (HRTOF) technique. The 2-methylallyl radicals were generated by 193 nm photolysis of 3-chloro-2-methyl-1-propene precursors. The photofragment yield spectrum of H-atom products increases in intensity with decreasing wavelengths in 226–244 nm. The TOF spectra of H-atom products show a bimodal structure. The predominant product channel (with ∼98% branching ratio) has a kinetic energy release peaking at ∼7 kcal/mol, with an average ratio of ET in the total available energy, (fT), of ∼0.18 in 226–244 nm and an isotropic product angular distribution. At the low ET, isotropic component is from statistical unimolecular decomposition of highly vibrationally excited hot 2-methylallyl to the methylenecyclopropane+H products, following internal conversion from the excited electronic state. The minor product channel (with ∼2% branching ratio) has a large kinetic energy peaking at ∼50 kcal/mol, with (fT)≈0.63 and an anisotropic angular distribution (β≈−0.2). At the high ET, anisotropic component is non-statistical and is postulated to be from direct loss of H atom via the 3p Rydberg state or repulsive part of the ground state to the 1,3-butadiene+H products.more » « less

This study presents MeTILDA (Melodic Transcription in Language Documentation and Application) as a solution to teaching pitch patterns distinct from English. Specifically, we explore ways to improve data visualization through a visualized pronunciation teaching guide called Pitch Art. The working materials can be downloaded or stored in the cloud for further use and collaboration. These features are aimed to facilitate teachers in developing curriculum for learning pronunciation, and provide students with an interactive and integrative learning environment to better understand Blackfoot language and pronunciation.more » « less

Wen, Tzai-Hung (Ed.)We investigate the dynamic characteristics of Covid-19 daily infection rates in Taiwan during its initial surge period, focusing on 79 districts within the seven largest cities. By employing computational techniques, we extract 18 features from each district-specific curve, transforming unstructured data into structured data. Our analysis reveals distinct patterns of asymmetric growth and decline among the curves. Utilizing theoretical information measurements such as conditional entropy and mutual information, we identify major factors of order-1 and order-2 that influence the peak value and curvature at the peak of the curves, crucial features characterizing the infection rates. Additionally, we examine the impact of geographic and socioeconomic factors on the curves by encoding each of the 79 districts with two binary characteristics: North-vs-South and Urban-vs-Suburban. Furthermore, leveraging this data-driven understanding at the district level, we explore the fine-scale behavioral effects on disease spread by examining the similarity among 96 age-group-specific curves within urban districts of Taipei and suburban districts of New Taipei City, which collectively represent a substantial portion of the nation’s population. Our findings highlight the implicit influence of human behaviors related to living, traveling, and working on the dynamics of Covid-19 transmission in Taiwan.more » « less

Mechanical failure and chemical degradation of device heterointerfaces can strongly influence the long-term stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) under thermal cycling and damp heat conditions. We report chirality-mediated interfaces based onR-/S-methylbenzyl-ammonium between the perovskite absorber and electron-transport layer to create an elastic yet strong heterointerface with increased mechanical reliability. This interface harnesses enantiomer-controlled entropy to enhance tolerance to thermal cycling–induced fatigue and material degradation, and a heterochiral arrangement of organic cations leads to closer packing of benzene rings, which enhances chemical stability and charge transfer. The encapsulated PSCs showed retentions of 92% of power-conversion efficiency under a thermal cycling test (−40°C to 85°C; 200 cycles over 1200 hours) and 92% under a damp heat test (85% relative humidity; 85°C; 600 hours).more » « less
