Bosonization describes Fermi surface dynamics in terms of a collective field that lives on a part of phase space. While sensible semiclassically, the challenge of treating such a field quantum mechanically has prevented bosonization from providing as powerful a nonperturbative tool as in one dimension. We show that general Fermi surfaces can be exactly described by a particular N→∞ limit of a U(N)1 Wess-Zumino-Witten model, with a tower of irrelevant corrections. This matrix-valued description encodes the noncommutative nature of phase space, and its (solvable) strongly coupled dynamics resolves the naive overcounting of degrees of freedom of the collective field without the need to cut the Fermi surface into patches. This approach furthermore provides a quantitative tool to study power-law corrections to Fermi surface dynamics.more » « lessFree, publicly-accessible full text available March 1, 2027

How do comprehenders interpret semantically implausible sentences? Previous studies proposed a noisy-channel framework of sentence comprehension, where communication between a speaker and a comprehender happens in a noisy channel. The comprehender rationally adopts an interpretation of a sentence based on how likely the interpretation is (the semantic prior) and how likely is the interpretation corrupted into the perceived sentence because of noise (the likelihood). The theory predicted that comprehenders would be more likely to adopt a literal interpretation of an implausible sentence if their prior of implausible sentences were higher. To test this hypothesis, Gibson et al. manipulated the proportion of implausible test sentences in two sets of experiments, where participants read a number of sentences and answer a comprehension question following each sentence. Although their results supported the hypothesis, the experiment could be confounded (a) by participants’ adaptation effect (due to different experiment lengths) and (b) by different participants having different strategies to do the task (due to the between-subject design). In our study, we manipulated the semantic prior and controlled for these potential confounds. We found participants exposed to more implausible sentences were indeed more likely to interpret implausible sentences literally. Our results hence offer additional support for the noisy-channel framework.more » « less

Chiral processes that lack mirror symmetry pervade nature from enantioselective molecular interactions to the asymmetric development of organisms. An outstanding challenge at the interface between physics and biology consists in bridging the multiple scales between microscopic and macroscopic chirality. Here, we combine theory, experiments and modern inference algorithms to study a paradigmatic example of dynamic chirality transfer across scales: the generation of tissue-scale flows from subcellular forces. The distinctive properties of our microscopic graph model and the corresponding coarse-grained viscoelasticity are that (i) net cell proliferation is spatially inhomogeneous and (ii) cellular dynamics cannot be expressed as an energy gradient. To overcome the general challenge of inferring microscopic model parameters from noisy high-dimensional data, we develop a nudged automatic differentiation algorithm (NADA) that can handle large fluctuations in cell positions observed in single tissue snapshots. This data-calibrated microscopic model quantitatively captures proliferation-driven tissue flows observed at large scales in our experiments on fibroblastoma cell cultures. Beyond chirality, our inference algorithm can be used to extract interpretable graph models from limited amounts of noisy data of living and inanimate cellular systems such as networks of convection cells and flowing foams.more » « less
