Program sketching is a program synthesis paradigm in which the programmer provides a partial program with holes and assertions. The goal of the synthesizer is to automatically find integer values for the holes so that the resulting program satisfies the assertions. The most popular sketching tool, Sketch , can efficiently solve complex program sketches but uses an integer encoding that often performs poorly if the sketched program manipulates large integer values. In this article, we propose a new solving technique that allows Sketch to handle large integer values while retaining its integer encoding. Our technique uses a result from number theory, the Chinese Remainder Theorem, to rewrite program sketches to only track the remainders of certain variable values with respect to several prime numbers. We prove that our transformation is sound and the encoding of the resulting programs are exponentially more succinct than existing Sketch encodings. We evaluate our technique on a variety of benchmarks manipulating large integer values. null (Ed.)Program synthesis is now a reality, and we are approaching the point where domain-specific synthesizers can now handle problems of practical sizes. Moreover, some of these tools are finding adoption in industry. However, for synthesis to become a mainstream technique adopted at large by programmers as well as by end-users, we need to design programmable synthesis frameworks that (i) are not tailored to specific domains or languages, (ii) enable one to specify synthesis problems with a variety of qualitative and quantitative objectives in mind, and (iii) come equipped with theoretical as well as practical guarantees. We report on our work on designing such frameworks and on building synthesis engines that can handle program-synthesis problems describable in such frameworks, and describe open challenges and opportunities.more » « less

Direct manipulation is a programming paradigm in which the programmer conveys the intended program behavior by modifying program values at runtime. The programming environment then finds a modification of the original program that yields the manipulated values. In this paper, we propose the first framework for direct manipulation of imperative programs. First, we introduce direct state manipulation, which allows programmers to visualize the trace of a buggy program on an input, and modify variable values at a location. Second, we propose a synthesis technique based on program sketching and quantitative objectives to efficiently find the “closest” program to the original one that is consistent with the manipulated values. We formalize the problem and build a tool JDial based on the Sketch synthesizer. We investigate the effectiveness of direct manipulation by using JDial to fix benchmarks from introductory programming assignments. In our evaluation, we observe that direct state manipulations are an effective specification mechanism: even when provided with a single state manipulation, JDial can produce desired program modifications for 66% of our benchmarks while techniques based only on test cases always fail.more » « less
