Abstract A dynamically responsive hydrogel medium is prepared from two self‐assembling components, a polysaccharide (chitosan) and a surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate; SDS). It is shown that this medium can be patterned using an electrode “pen” to reconfigure supramolecular structure: cathodic writing induces neutral chitosan chains to form a crystalline network, while anodic writing generates cationic chitosan chains that electrostatically crosslink with anionic SDS micelles. Both supramolecular structures are re‐configurable and each is stabilized by structure‐induced shifts in chitosan's pKa, thus electronically written patterns can be erased, new patterns can be written, and patterns can be written in three dimensions. Further, it is shown that NaCl‐induced morphological transitions of the SDS micelles allow patterns to be reversibly concealed or revealed. To demonstrate the versatility of this medium for information storage, a quick response (QR) code is electronically written and it is shown that this code can be recognized by a standard cellphone app. This QR code can be concealed by making the medium opaque (i.e., by obscuring the pattern) or by making the pattern evanescent (i.e., by making pattern invisible). Overall, this work demonstrates that a dynamically responsive medium composed of simple, safe and sustainable components can be reversibly patterned with spatial and quantitative control using top‐down electronic inputs.more » « less

Abstract Paper-based electrochemical sensors provide the opportunity for low-cost, portable and environmentally friendly single-use chemical analysis and there are various reports of surface-functionalized paper electrodes. Here we report a composite paper electrode that is fabricated through designed papermaking using cellulose, carbon fibers (CF), and graphene oxide (GO). The composite paper has well-controlled structure, stable, and repeatable properties, and offers the electrocatalytic activities for sensitive and selective chemical detection. We demonstrate that this CF/GO/cellulose composite paper can be reduced electrochemically using relatively mild conditions and this GO reduction confers electrocatalytic properties to the composite paper. Finally, we demonstrate that this composite paper offers sensing performance (sensitivity and selectivity) comparable to, or better than, paper-based sensors prepared by small-batch surface-modification (e.g., printing) methods. We envision this coupling of industrialized papermaking technologies with interfacial engineering and electrochemical reduction can provide a platform for single-use and portable chemical detection for a wide range of applications.more » « less

This study builds a coronavirus knowledge graph (KG) by merging two information sources. The first source is Analytical Graph (AG), which integrates more than 20 different public datasets related to drug discovery. The second source is CORD-19, a collection of published scientific articles related to COVID-19. We combined both chemo genomic entities in AG with entities extracted from CORD-19 to expand knowledge in the COVID-19 domain. Before populating KG with those entities, we perform entity disambiguation on CORD-19 collections using Wikidata. Our newly built KG contains at least 21,700 genes, 2500 diseases, 94,000 phenotypes, and other biological entities (e.g., compound, species, and cell lines). We define 27 relationship types and use them to label each edge in our KG. This research presents two cases to evaluate the KG’s usability: analyzing a subgraph (ego-centered network) from the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and revealing paths between biological entities (hydroxychloroquine and IL-6 receptor; chloroquine and STAT1). The ego-centered network captured information related to COVID-19. We also found significant COVID-19-related information in top-ranked paths with a depth of three based on our path evaluation.more » « less

null (Ed.)Defects in strongly correlated materials such as V 2 O 3 play influential roles on their electrical properties. Understanding the defects' structure is of paramount importance. In this project, we investigate defect structures in V 2 O 3 grown via a flux method. We use AFM to see surface features in several large flake-like particles that exhibit characteristics of spiral growth. We also use Bragg coherent diffractive imaging (BCDI) to probe in 3 dimensions a smaller particle without flake-like morphology and note an absence of the pure screw dislocation characteristic of spiral growth. We identified and measured several defects by comparing the observed local displacement of the crystal, measured via BCDI to well-known models of the displacement around defects in the crystal. We identified two partial dislocations in the crystal. We discuss how defects of different types influence the morphology of V 2 O 3 crystals grown via a flux method.more » « less
