Title: Gordon Research Conference on photosynthesis: photosynthetic plasticity from the environment to synthetic systems
Here, we provide a summary of the 2017 Gordon Research Conference on Photosynthesis: “Photosynthetic plasticity: from the environment to synthetic systems”. This conference was held at the Grand Summit Resort Hotel at Sunday River, Newry, Maine, USA, from July 16 to 21, 2017. We have also included here a brief description of the Gordon Research Seminar (for students and post-docs) held during 2 days preceding this conference. Following the conclusion of the conference’s scientific program, four young scientists (Han Bao, Vivek Tiwari, Setsuko Wakao, and Usha Lingappa) were recognized for their research presentations, each of whom received a book as a gift from one of us (Govindjee). Having chaired the 2015 Gordon Research Conference on Photosynthesis in 2015, Fabrice Rappaport, who lost his fight against cancer in January 2016, was remembered for his profound impact on the field of photosynthesis research.  more » « less

  2. This report is a summary of the mini-conference on Workforce Development Through Research-Based, Plasma-Focused Science Education and Public Engagement held during the 2022 American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics annual meeting. The motivation for organizing this mini-conference originates from recent studies and community-based reports highlighting important issues with the current state of the plasma workforce. Here, we summarize the main findings presented in the two speaker sessions of the mini-conference, the challenges, and recommendations identified in the discussion sessions and the results from a post-conference survey. We further provide information on initiatives and studies presented at the mini-conference, along with references to further resources.

  5. This paper reflects on the outcomes of a student-centered workshop held during the Indian Ecological Society International Conference, held at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab, 12 – 15 November 2024.The students' workshop was a follow-up on the topics developed in the Symposium on “Agriculture, Climate Changes, and Energy Transitions: Building Capacity to Maintain Yields of Innovative Agrifood Systems” held during the conference. Its major purpose was to encourage discussions among conference participants about specific research agendas and potential teaching plans. Students worked in groups of four to five to provide ideas for improving teaching and learning and ideas for future research. They consistently mentioned a need to grasp the practical application of their classroom studies. Most of the research ideas focused on conservation or enhancement of resources used in agriculture and many involved cross-disciplinary topics, such as the expansion of data analysis technologies to promote resilience for agricultural communities. The results parallel the principles outlined as key to a bioeconomy, outlined by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
