Abstract A mass-balance model using upper-air meteorological data for input was calibrated with surface mass balance measured mainly during 1977–78 at 67 sites on Columbia Glacier, Alaska, between 135 and 2645 m a.s.l. Root-mean-square error, model vs measured, is 1.0 m w.e. a −1 , with r 2 = 0.88. A remarkable result of the analysis was that both precipitation and the factor in the positive degree-day model used to estimate surface ablation were constant with altitude. The model was applied to reconstruct glacier-wide components of surface mass balance over 1948–2007. Surface ablation, 4 km 3 ice eq. a −1 (ice equivalent), has changed little throughout the period. From 1948 until about 1981, when drastic retreat began, the surface mass balance was positive but changes in glacier geometry were small, so the positive balance was offset by calving, ∼0.9 km 3 ice eq. a −1 . During retreat, volume loss of the glacier accounted for 92% of the iceberg production. Calving increased to ∼4.3 km 3 ice eq. a −1 from 1982 to 1995, and after that until 2007 to ∼8.0 km 3 ice eq. a −1 , which was about twice the loss by surface ablation, whereas prior to retreat it was only about a quarter as much. Calving is calculated as the difference between glacier-wide surface mass balance and geodetically determined volume change.

Reconstruction of mass balance of glaciers in southern Norway back to 1948
Abstract A model using upper-air meteorological variables in the US National Centers for Environmental Prediction and US National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) re-analysis database is used to extend net balance b n back to 1948 for seven glaciers in southern Norway. The observational record of another glacier, Storbreen, began in 1948. Over the observational record of each of the seven glaciers, correlation with Storbreen estimates b n more accurately than the upper-air model does for four of them and less accurately for three. In all seven cases, however, an average of the model and the Storbreen correlation is more accurate than either alone, so the average is used to reconstruct b n for years when it was not observed. For the seven glaciers other than Storbreen, a combined series is formed from observations during their period of record and from reconstructed values prior to then back to 1948. There are three distinct sections in all eight b n series: prior to 1989; 1989–1995, when the North Atlantic Oscillation index was strongly positive; and after 1995. The 1989–95 mean b n was anomalously positive because of both decreased ablation and especially increased accumulation. The mean b n since 1995 has been anomalously negative because of increased ablation, whilst accumulation has been nearly the same as over 1948–88. The first principal component of the eight 1949–2005 b n series explains 78% of the total variance, and the second explains 12%. Over 1949–88 there were no substantial shifts in b n or in either winter balance b w or summer balance b s at any of the seven glaciers where observations began after 1948, nor were there in the Storbreen record. There is a distinction between the three glaciers that gained mass over 1948–2005 and the five that lost mass. Each of the three that gained had accumulation-area ratio AAR ≥ 0.64 and < 0.7% of its area δS in the lowest tenth of its altitude range, while the five that lost had AAR ≤ 0.46 and 1.9 ≤ δS ≤ 4.4%. Because of these hypsometries, the five glaciers that lost mass now have an especially large ablation area.

null (Ed.)Abstract The Beaufort high (BH) and its accompanying anticyclonic winds drive the Arctic Ocean’s Beaufort Gyre, the major freshwater reservoir of the Arctic Ocean. The Beaufort Gyre circulation and its capacity to accumulate or release freshwater rely on the BH intensity. The migration of Nordic seas cyclones into the Arctic has been hypothesized to moderate the strength of the BH. We explore this hypothesis by analyzing reanalysis sea level pressure fields to characterize the BH and identify and track cyclones north of 60°N during 1948–2019. A cluster analysis of Nordic seas cyclone trajectories reveals a western pathway (through the Arctic interior) associated with a relatively weak BH and an eastern pathway (along the Arctic periphery) associated with a relatively strong BH. Furthermore, we construct cyclone activity indices (CAIs) in the Arctic and Nordic seas that take into account multiple cyclone parameters (number, strength, and duration). There are significant correlations between the BH and the CAIs in the Arctic and Nordic seas during 1948–2019, with anomalously strong cyclone activity related to an anomalously weak BH, and vice versa. We show how the Arctic and Nordic seas CAIs experienced a regime shift toward increased cyclone activity between the first four decades analyzed (1948–88) and the most recent three decades (1989–2019). Over the same two time periods, the BH exhibits a weakening. Increased cyclone activity and an accompanying weakening of the BH may be consistent with expectations in a warming Arctic and have implications for Beaufort Gyre dynamics and freshwater.more » « less

This data package contains rabbit feces count data from plots with various levels of herbivore exclusion on Jornada Experimental Range (JER) and Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) lands. Study sites were established in 1995; one in black grama grassland and the other in creosotebush shrubland to compare the impact of herbivores on ecosystem processes between these vegetation types. Parallel studies were established at the Sevilleta LTER site (New Mexico, USA) and Mapimi Biosphere Reserve (Durango, Mexico). Each study site is 1 km by 0.5 km in area. Four replicate experimental blocks were randomly located at the grassland study site to measure vegetation responses using exclusion treatments including a) all mammalian herbivores, including cattle, lagomorphs, and rodents, b) lagomorphs and cattle only, c) cattle only, and d) control accessible to all herbivores. Because grazing cattle are excluded from the entire creosote site, only three replicate experimental blocks were randomly located there including a) all mammalian herbivores, including lagomorphs, and rodents, b) lagomorphs only, and c) control accessible to all herbivores. Thirty-six sampling points were positioned at 5.8-meter intervals on a systematically located 6 by 6 point grid within each plot. A permanent one-meter by one-meter vegetation measurement quadrat is located at each of the 36 points. Each year in spring and fall from 1995-2005, the total number of rabbit feces were counted within each quadrat. After 2005, sampling frequency channged to every 5 years and data collected record only presence or absence of feces. This study is ongoing.more » « less

Permanent 1 m^2 vegetation plots were established near each of the 88 Saddle grid stakes in 1989 by Marilyn Walker, who led the sampling effort until 1997. To estimate plant canopy cover, point quadrat measurements have been made at irregular intervals from 1989 to the present (1989, 1990, 1995, 1997, 2006, 2008 and yearly from 2010 onward). The point-quadrat technique used for sampling was described in Spasojevic et al. (2013) and Auerbach (1992). Auerbach, N. 1992. Associated with a project that was based upon the assumption that nitrogen may limit net primary plant production in desert grasslands, this project began measuring available inorganic soil N and potentially mineralizable N of soils at two desert grassland locations. Both available N and potentially mineralizable N were greatest following a drought period in 1989, declined during wetter periods that followed and remained relatively stable until another extended drought period. After drought in 1995-6, both forms of soil N increased, indicating the potential for greater NPP following drought and lower potential NPP during periods of normal precipitation.more » « less
