Title: Lewis‐Adduct Mediated Grain‐Boundary Functionalization for Efficient Ideal‐Bandgap Perovskite Solar Cells with Superior Stability
Abstract

State‐of‐the‐art perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have bandgaps that are invariably larger than 1.45 eV, which limits their theoretically attainable power conversion efficiency. The emergent mixed‐(Pb, Sn) perovskites with bandgaps of 1.2–1.3 eV are ideal for single‐junction solar cells according to the Shockley–Queisser limit, and they have the potential to deliver higher efficiency. Nevertheless, the high chemical activity of Sn(II) in these perovskites makes it extremely challenging to control their physical properties and chemical stability, thereby leading to PSCs with relatively low PCE and stability. In this work, the authors employ the Lewis‐adduct SnF2·3FACl additive in the solution‐processing of ideal‐bandgap halide perovskites (IBHPs), and prepare uniform large‐grain perovskite thin films containing continuously functionalized grain boundaries with the stable SnF2phase. Such Sn(II)‐rich grain‐boundary networks significantly enhance the physical properties and chemical stability of the IBHP thin films. Based on this approach, PSCs with an ideal bandgap of 1.3 eV are fabricated with a promising efficiency of 15.8%, as well as enhanced stability. The concept of Lewis‐adduct‐mediated grain‐boundary functionalization in IBHPs presented here points to a new chemical route for approaching the Shockley–Queisser limit in future stable PSCs.

  2. Abstract

Recently, the stability of organic–inorganic perovskite thin films under thermal, photo, and moisture stresses has become a major concern for further commercialization due to the high volatility of the organic cations in the prototype perovskite composition (CH3NH3PbI3). All inorganic cesium (Cs) based perovskite is an alternative to avoid the release or decomposition of organic cations. Moreover, substituting Pb with Sn in the organic–inorganic lead halide perovskites has been demonstrated to narrow the bandgap to 1.2–1.4 eV for high‐performance perovskite solar cells. In this work, a series of CsPb1−xSnxIBr2perovskite alloys via one‐step antisolvent method is demonstrated. These perovskite films present tunable bandgaps from 2.04 to 1.64 eV. Consequently, the CsPb0.75Sn0.25IBr2with homogeneous and densely crystallized morphology shows a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 11.53% and a highVocof 1.21 V with a much improved phase stability and illumination stability. This work provides a possibility for designing and synthesizing novel inorganic halide perovskites as the next generation of photovoltaic materials.

  3. Abstract

Extremely high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of ≈20–22% are realized through intensive research and development of 1.5–1.6 eV bandgap perovskite absorbers. However, development of ideal bandgap (1.3–1.4 eV) absorbers is pivotal to further improve PCE of single junction perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) because of a better balance between absorption loss of sub‐bandgap photons and thermalization loss of above‐bandgap photons as demonstrated by the Shockley–Queisser detailed balanced calculation. Ideal bandgap PVSCs are currently hindered by the poor optoelectronic quality of perovskite absorbers and their PCEs have stagnated at <15%. In this work, through systematic photoluminescence and photovoltaic analysis, a new ideal bandgap (1.35 eV) absorber composition (MAPb0.5Sn0.5(I0.8Br0.2)3) is rationally designed and developed, which possesses lower nonradiative recombination states, band edge disorder, and Urbach energy coupled with a higher absorption coefficient, which yields a reducedVoc,loss(0.45 V) and improved PCE (as high as 17.63%) for the derived PVSCs. This work provides a promising platform for unleashing the complete potential of ideal bandgap PVSCs and prospects for further improvement.

  4. Abstract

The alloying behavior between FAPbI3and CsSnI3perovskites is studied carefully for the first time, which has led to the realization of single‐phase hybrid perovskites of (FAPbI3)1−x(CsSnI3)x(0<x<1) compositions with anomalous bandgaps. (FAPbI3)1−x(CsSnI3)xperovskites exhibit stable, homogenous composition/microstructure at the nanoscale, as confirmed by microscopic characterization. The ideal bandgap of 1.3 eV for single‐junction solar cell operation is achieved in the rationally‐tailored (FAPbI3)0.7(CsSnI3)0.3‐composition perovskite. Solar cells based on this new perovskite show power conversion efficiency up to 14.6 %.

  5. Abstract

Inorganic CsPbIBr2perovskites have recently attracted enormous attention as a viable alternative material for optoelectronic applications due to their higher efficiency, thermal stability, suitable bandgap, and proper optical absorption. However, the CsPbIBr2perovskite films fabricated using a one-step deposition technique is usually comprised of small grain size with a large number of grain boundaries and compositional defects. In this work, silver iodide (AgI) will be incorporated as an additive into the CsPbIBr2perovskite precursor solution to prepare the unique perovskite CsI(PbBr2)1-x(AgI)x.The AgI additive in the precursor solution works as a nucleation promoter which will help the perovskite to grow and merge into a continuous film with reduced defects. With detailed characterizations, we found that incorporating AgI additive resulted in a uniform perovskite film with fewer grain boundaries, increased grain size, crystallinity, optical absorption while decreasing carrier recombination and trap density. Using the AgI in an optimum amount, we fabricated CsPbIBr2perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with a simple structure and achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.2% with a reduced hysteresis index. This work offers an alternative approach towards preparing high-quality CsPbIBr2perovskite films for solar cells with higher stability and other optoelectronic applications.
