Title: Side chain length affects backbone dynamics in poly(3‐alkylthiophene)s
ABSTRACT

Charge transport in conjugated polymers may be governed not only by the static microstructure but also fluctuations of backbone segments. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we predict the role of side chains in the backbone dynamics for regiorandom poly(3‐alkylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl)s (P3ATs). We show that the backbone of poly(3‐dodecylthiophene‐2‐5‐diyl) (P3DDT) moves faster than that of poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl) (P3HT) as a result of the faster motion of the longer side chains. To verify our predictions, we investigated the structures and dynamics of regiorandom P3ATs with neutron scattering and solid state NMR. Measurements of spin‐lattice relaxations (T1) using NMR support our prediction of faster motion for side chain atoms that are farther away from the backbone. Using small‐angle neutron scattering (SANS), we confirmed that regiorandom P3ATs are amorphous at about 300 K, although microphase separation between the side chains and backbones is apparent. Furthermore, quasi‐elastic neutron scattering (QENS) reveals that thiophene backbone motion is enhanced as the side chain length increases from hexyl to dodecyl. The faster motion of longer side chains leads to faster backbone dynamics, which in turn may affect charge transport for conjugated polymers. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Flexible alkyl side chain in conjugate polymers (CPs) improves the solubility and promotes solution processability, in addition, it affects interchain packing and charge mobilities. Despite the well-known charge mobility and morphology correlation for these semi-crystalline polymers, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of the impact of side chain on their crystallization kinetics. In the present work, isothermal crystallization of five poly(3-alkylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3ATs) with different side-chain structures were systematically investigated. To suppress the extremely fast crystallization and trap the sample into amorphous glass, an advanced fast scanning chip calorimetry technique, which is able to quench the sample with few to tens thousands of K/s, was applied. Results show that the crystallization of P3ATs was greatly inhibited after incorporation of branched side chains, as indicated by a dramatic up to six orders of magnitude decrease in the crystallization rate. The suppressed crystallization of P3ATs were correlated with an increased π–π stacking distance due to unfavorable side-chain steric interaction. This work provides a pathway to use side-chain engineering to control the crystallization behavior for CPs, thus to control device performance.

  2. ABSTRACT

Block copolymers with donor and acceptor conjugated polymer blocks provide an approach to dictating the donor–accepter interfacial structure and understanding its relationship to charge separation and photovoltaic performance. We report the preparation of a series of donor‐linker‐acceptor block copolymers with poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) donor blocks, poly((9,9‐dioctylfluorene)‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐[4,7‐bis(thiophen‐5‐yl)‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole]‐2′,2″‐diyl) (PFTBT) acceptor blocks, and varying lengths of oligo‐ethylene glycol (OEG) chains as the linkers. Morphological analysis shows that the linkers increase polymer crystallinity while a combination of optical and photovoltaic measurements shows that the insertion of a flexible spacer reduces fluorescence quenching and photovoltaic efficiencies of solution processed photovoltaic devices. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations indicate that the linking groups reduce both charge separation and recombination rates, and block copolymers with flexible linkers will likely rotate to assume a nonplanar orientation, resulting in a significant loss of overlap at the donor–linker–acceptor interface. This work provides a systematic study of the role of linker length on the photovoltaic performance of donor–linker–acceptor block copolymers and indicates that linkers should be designed to control both the electronic properties and relative orientations of conjugated polymers at the interface. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 3. Abstract

Wearable devices benefit from the use of stretchable conjugated polymers (CPs). Traditionally, the design of stretchable CPs is based on the assumption that a low elastic modulus (E) is crucial for achieving high stretchability. However, this research, which analyzes the mechanical properties of 65 CP thin films, challenges this notion. It is discovered that softness alone does not determine stretchability; rather, it is the degree of entanglement that is critical. This means that rigid CPs can also exhibit high stretchability, contradicting conventional wisdom. To inverstigate further, the mechanical behavior, electrical properties, and deformation mechanism of two model CPs: a glassy poly(3‐butylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl) (P3BT) with anEof 2.2 GPa and a viscoelastic poly(3‐octylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl) (P3OT) with anEof 86 MPa, are studied. Ex situ transmission X‐ray scattering and polarized UV–vis spectroscopy revealed that only the initial strain (i.e., <20%) exhibits different chain alignment mechanisms between two polymers, while both rigid and soft P3ATs showed similarly behavior at larger strains. By challenging the conventional design metric of lowEfor high stretchability and highlighting the importance of entanglement, it is hoped to broaden the range of CPs available for use in wearable devices.

  4. The electrochemical doping/dedoping kinetics, and the organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) performance of a series of polythiophene homopolymers with ethylene glycol units in their side chains using both kosmotropic and chaotropic anion solutions were studied. We compare their performance to a reference polymer, the polythiophene derivative with diethylene glycol side chains, poly(3-{[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]methyl}thiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3MEEMT). We find larger OECT material figure of merit, μC *, where μ is the carrier mobility and C * is the volumetric capacitance, and faster doping kinetics with more oxygen atoms on the side chains, and if the oxygen atom is farther from the polythiophene backbone. Replacing the oxygen atom close to the polythiophene backbone with an alkyl unit increases the film π-stacking crystallinity (higher electronic conductivity in the undoped film) but sacrifices the available doping sites (lower volumetric capacitance C * in OECT). We show that this variation in C * is the dominant factor in changing the μC * product for this family of polymers. With more oxygen atoms on the side chain, or with the oxygen atom farther from the polymer backbone, we observe both more passive swelling and higher C *. In addition, we show that, compared to the doping speed, the dedoping speed, as measured via spectroelectrochemistry, is both generally faster and less dependent on ion species or side chain oxygen content. Last, through OECT, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and spectroelectrochemistry measurements, we show that the chaotropic anion PF 6 − facilitates higher doping levels, faster doping kinetics, and lower doping thresholds compared to the kosmotropic anion Cl − , although the exact differences depend on the polymer side chains. Our results highlight the importance of balancing μ and C * when designing molecular structures for OECT active layers.

  5. Side-chain sequence enabled regioisomeric acceptors, bearing different side-chain sequences on the same conjugated backbone, are herein reported. Two regioregular polymers PTBI-1 and PTBI-2 and one regiorandom polymer PTBI-3 were synthesized from these two regioisomeric acceptors for a comparative study. UV–vis–NIR absorption spectroscopy and electrochemical study confirmed similar frontier molecular orbital levels of the three polymers in their solid state. More intriguingly, absorption profiles suggest that the sequence of side chains greatly governs the aggregation behaviors. Furthermore, the PTBI-2 film shows larger ordered domains than PTBI-1 and PTBI-3 films, as supported by AFM and GIWAXS measurements. As a result, PTBI-2-based FET devices achieved an average hole mobility of 1.37 cm2 V–1 s–1, much higher than the two polymers with other side-chain sequences. The regiorandom PTBI-3 exhibited the lowest average hole mobility of 0.27 cm2 V–1 s–1. This study highlights the significant impact of side-chain sequence regioisomerism on aggregation behaviors, morphologies, and subsequently charge transport properties of donor–acceptor type conjugated polymers.
