Title: Tetrathiafulvalene-calix[4]pyrrole: a versatile synthetic receptor for electron-deficient planar and spherical guests
The first tetrakis-tetrathiafulvalene-calix[4]pyrrole (TTF-C[4]P) was reported in 2004. Early on it and related π-extended TTF-C[4]Ps were found to function as both anion receptors and as hosts for planar electron deficient neutral guests, including nitroaromatic explosives. Anion binding was found to occur with a 1 : 1 binding stoichiometry and to stabilise the cone C[4]P conformation, whereas planar electron deficient guests were bound in a cooperative 1 : 2 fashion to the 1,3-alternate conformer. Addition of strongly complexing anions was found to trigger release of the electron deficient guests concurrent with a conformational change to the cone form. Subsequent studies led to the discovery of anion-induced complexation with C 60 , and the finding that the resulting complexes would support fast photoinduced electron transfer events. Synthetic advances then led to the preparation of nonsymmetric TTF-C[4]Ps where a single moiety organises the receptor in either the 1,3-alternate conformation or the partial cone conformation, thus modifying both selectivity and sensitivity. TTF-C[4]P-based stimulus responsive systems, that rely on anions and cations as controlling inputs, have also been developed and studied in recent years. This review provides a summary of TTF-C[4]P-related chemistry.  more » « less

Ionic liquids (ILs) exhibit unique properties that have led to their development and widespread use for a variety of applications. Development efforts have generally focused on achieving desired macroscopic properties via tuning of the IL through variation of the cations and anions. Both the macroscopic and microscopic properties of an IL influence its tunability and thus feasibility of use for selected applications. Works geared toward a microscopic understanding of the nature and strength of the intrinsic cation-anion interactions of ILs have been limited to date. Specifically, the intrinsic strength of the cation-anion interactions in ILs is largely unknown. In previous work, we employed threshold collision-induced dissociation (TCID) approaches supported and enhanced by electronic structure calculations to determine the bond dissociation energies (BDEs) and characterize the nature of the cation-anion interactions in a series of four 2:1 clusters of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations with the hexafluorophosphate anion, [2C n mim:PF 6 ] + . To examine the effects of the 1-alkyl chain on the structure and energetics of binding, the cation was varied over the series: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium, [C 2 mim] + , 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium, [C 4 mim] + , 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium, [C 6 mim] + , and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium, [C 8 mim] + . The variation in the strength of binding among these [2C n mim:PF 6 ] + clusters was found to be similar in magnitude to the average experimental uncertainty in the measurements. To definitively establish an absolute order of binding among these [2C n mim:PF 6 ] + clusters, we extend this work again using TCID and electronic structure theory approaches to include competitive binding studies of three mixed 2:1 clusters of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations and the hexafluorophosphate anion, [C n-2 mim:PF 6 :C n mim] + for n = 4, 6, and 8. The absolute BDEs of these mixed [C n-2 mim:PF 6 :C n mim] + clusters as well as the absolute difference in the strength of the intrinsic binding interactions as a function of the cation are determined with significantly improved precision. By combining the thermochemical results of the previous independent and present competitive measurements, the BDEs of the [2C n mim:PF 6 ] + clusters are both more accurately and more precisely determined. Comparisons are made to results for the analogous [2C n mim:BF 4 ] + and [C n-2 mim:PF 6 :C n mim] + clusters previously examined to elucidate the effects of the [PF 6 ] - and [BF 4 ] - anions on the binding.

  2. Abstract We introduce a new boron‐doped cyclophane, the hexabora[16]cyclophaneB6‐FMes, in which six tricoordinate borane moieties alternate with short conjugatedp‐phenylene linkers. Exocyclic 2,4,6‐tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl (FMes) groups serve not only to further withdraw electron density but at the same time sterically shield the boron atoms, resulting in a macrocycle that is both highly electron‐deficient and stable. The optical and electronic properties are compared with those of related linear oligomers and the electronic structure is further evaluated by computational methods. The studies uncover unique properties ofB6‐FMes, including a low‐lying and extensively delocalized LUMO and a wide HOMO–LUMO gap, which arise from the combination of a cyclic π‐system, strong electronic communication between the closely spaced borons, and the attachment of electron‐deficient pendent groups. The binding of small anions to the electron‐deficient macrocycle and molecular model compounds is investigated and emissive exciplexes are detected in aromatic solvents.

  3. The structures of three racemic (tetrahydro-[1,3]dioxino[5,4-d][1,3]dioxin-4-yl)methanol derivatives are reported, namely, 4-[(methylsulfonyloxy)methyl]-2,4,4a,6,8,8a-hexahydro-[1,3]dioxino[5,4-d][1,3]dioxine, C8H14O7S,1, 4-[(benzyloxy)methyl]-2,4,4a,6,8,8a-hexahydro-[1,3]dioxino[5,4-d][1,3]dioxine, C14H18O5,2, and 4-[(anilinocarbonyl)methyl]-2,4,4a,6,8,8a-hexahydro-[1,3]dioxino[5,4-d][1,3]dioxine, C14H17NO6,3. Mesylate ester1at 173 K has triclinicP\overline{1} symmetry and both benzyl ether2at 173 K and phenyl urethane3have monoclinicP21/csymmetry. These structures are of interest because of the conformation of thecis-fused tetraoxadecalin ring system. Thiscis-bicyclo[4.4.0]decane ring system,i.e. cis-decalin, can undergo conformational equilibration. In the two most stable conformers, both six-membered rings adopt a chair conformation. However, there are significant consequences in these two stable conformers, with heteroatom substitution at the 1,3,5,7-ring positions as described. Only one conformation, denoted as `concave' or `inside', is found in these crystal structures. This is consistent with previously reported structures of the 1,1-geminal dihydroxy aldehyde and tosylate analogs.

  4. Calix[4]pyrroles (CPs) and polyammonium azacrowns (ACs) are well-known receptors for anions. CPs bind anions by directional hydrogen bonds that do not always work well for aqueous analytes. The positive charge in polyammonium ACs allows for a stronger but non-directional anion-ammonium electrostatic attraction but lack selectivity. Bridging the gap between CPs and ACs could increase affinity and potentially preserve the selectivity of anion binding. We have synthesized a flexible calixpyrrole-azacrown near isosteric receptor and incorporated an environmentally sensitive dansyl fluorophore to enable fluorescence measurements. Anion binding was evaluated using NMR and fluorescence titrations. The isosteric receptor shows a strong affinity for aqueous phosphates and phosphonates (Na + salts) in the order HAsO 4 2− > H 2 PO 4 − > H 2 P 2 O 7 2− > glyphosate 2− > AMP − > methylphosphonate − ≫ ADP 2− or ATP 3− but does not bind halides. This is in stark contrast to CP which shows a strong preference for halides over oxyanions. The anion binding by the new receptor was accompanied by analyte-specific changes in fluorescence intensity and spectral width and by a wavelength shift. These parameters were used in qualitative and quantitative sensing of aqueous anions. By applying machine-learning algorithms, such as linear discriminant analysis and support vector machine linear regression, this one sensor can differentiate between 10 different analytes and accurately quantify herbicide glyphosate and methylphosphonate, a product of sarin, soman or cyclosarin hydrolysis. In fact, glyphosate can be quantified even in the presence of competing anions such as orthophosphate (LODs were ≤ 1 μM).

  5. Excess electrons in liquid acetonitrile are of particular interest because they exist in two different forms in equilibrium: they can be present as traditional solvated electrons in a cavity, and they can form some type of solvated molecular anion. Studies of small acetonitrile cluster anions in the gas phase show two isomers with distinct vertical detachment energies, and it is tempting to presume that the two gas-phase cluster anion isomers are precursors of the two excess electron species present in bulk solution. In this paper, we perform DFT-based ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of acetonitrile cluster anions to understand the electronic species that are present and why they have different binding energies. Using a long-range-corrected density functional that was optimally tuned to describe acetonitrile cluster anion structures, we have theoretically explored the chemistry of (CH3CN)n¯ cluster anions with sizes n=5,7 and 10. Since the temperature of the experimental cluster anions is not known, we performed two sets of simulations that investigated how the way in which the cluster anions are prepared affects the excess electron binding motif: one set of simulations simply attached excess electrons to neutral (CH3CN)n clusters, providing little opportunity for the clusters to relax in the presence of the excess electron, while the other set allowed the cluster anions to thermally equilibrate near room temperature. We find that both sets of simulations show three distinct electron binding motifs: electrons can attach to the surface of the cluster (dipole-bound) or be present as either solvated monomer anions, CH3CN¯, or as solvated molecular dimer anions, (CH3CN)2¯. All three species have higher binding energies at larger cluster sizes. Thermal equilibration strongly favors the formation of the valence-bound molecular anions relative to surface-bound excess electrons, and the dimer anion becomes more stable than the monomer anion and surface-bound species as the cluster size increases. The calculated photoelectron spectra from our simulations in which there was poor thermal equilibration are in good agreement with experiment, suggesting assignment of the two experimental cluster anion isomers as the surface-bound electron and the solvated molecular dimer anion. The simulations also suggest that the shoulder seen experimentally on the low-energy isomer's detachment peak is not part of a vibronic progression but instead results from molecular monomer anions. Nowhere in the size range that we explore do we see evidence for a non-valence, cavity-bound interior-solvated electron, indicating that this species is likely only accessible at larger sizes with good thermal equilibration.
