Title: Towards a Design Space of Short-Session Making Workshops for Middle School-aged Students
This paper describes a series of making activities developed for entry-level engagement in selected learning contexts. We describe the goals of each activity and reflections on development and delivery. We use our reflections from the design and implementation to develop a set of dimensions along which to talk about important similarities and differences between these kinds of making workshops. These dimensions enable us to highlight and discuss some of the challenges and tradeoffs. The activities discussed focus on a middle-school audience, but the findings illustrate themes that are relevant to the design of making activities more generally.  more » « less

    Not AvailableAn emerging body of work in the learning sciences has examined how computational models can support teachers in responding to students' prompts, inquiry, and ideas. This work has highlighted how teachers make discursive moves in relation to computational models to support classroom discussion. In this paper, we focus on a complementary phenomenon: teachers' design of code reflections, or curricular modifications that deepen students' engagement with one another's code for scientific and computational sensemaking. We highlight how these code reflections advanced student discourse and how both the code reflections and discourse became more sophisticated over time, shifting towards making connections across code, behaviors, simulation outcomes, data and the scientific process being represented. We reflect on how this progression was driven by shifts in the teachers’ comfort with code and computational modeling and the resources designers can offer to educators to support the development of code reflections.

  2. Object detection plays a pivotal role in various fields, for example, a smart traffic system relies on the detected results for decision-making. However, existing studies predominately utilize optical camera and LiDAR, which exhibit limitations in adverse outdoor environments, such as foggy weather. To address these challenges, millimeter-waves (mmWaves) attract researchers’ attention to detect objects in severe conditions since they can work effectively in low-visibility conditions and overcome small obstacles. Yet, previous mmWave-based works have shown limited performance, such as no shape information for objects. Therefore, we design and implement a two-stage system,mmBox, to accurately predict bounding boxes with depth for vehicles and pedestrians, which first generates heatmaps in different dimensions and then leverages a deep learning model to extract features for predictions. To evaluate the performance ofmmBox, we collected real-world mmWave reflections from urban traffic intersections and dense-fog environments. The extensive evaluation metrics show remarkable accuracy and the low latency of our model.

  3. Abstract The objective of this study is to investigate students’ decision-making during the information gathering activities of a design process. Existing literature in engineering education has shown that students face difficulties while gathering information in various activities of a design process such as brainstorming and CAD modeling. Decision-making is an important aspect of these activities. While gathering information, students make several decisions such as what information to acquire and how to acquire that information. There lies a research gap in understanding how students make decisions while gathering information in a product design process. To address this gap, we conduct semi-structured interviews and surveys in a product design course. We analyze the students’ decision-making activities from the lens of a sequential information acquisition and decision-making (SIADM) framework. We find that the students recognize the need to acquire information about the physics and dynamics of their design artifact during the CAD modeling activity of the product design process. However, they do not acquire such information from their CAD models primarily due to the lack of the project requirements, their ability, and the time to do so. Instead, they acquire such information from the prototyping activity as their physical prototype does not satisfy their design objectives. However, the students do not get the opportunity to iterate their prototype with the given cost and time constraints. Consequently, they rely on improvising during prototyping. Based on our observations, we discuss the need for designing course project activities such that it facilitates students’ product design decisions.

This study investigated the influence of immersive classroom simulation activities on the development of elementary pre-service teachers in two separate mathematics and science education courses that simultaneously focus on pedagogy and content. Participants submitted written personal reflections about their teaching experiences using the immersive classroom simulation activities. These reflections were analyzed for common emergent themes within and across courses. The participants discussed the benefits of the immersive classroom simulation activities in their written personal reflections. They viewed the experience as helpful in developing their skills as a practicing teacher in mathematics and science. Specifically, participants identified three sub-themes including: (a) the immersive classroom simulation activities as being beneficial by providing more authentic real-life teaching experiences than those experienced during peer-group teaching activities; (b) the importance of holding complete and appropriate understandings of content when teaching mathematics and science; and (c) the role of deep content knowledge in the process of developing high quality questions for students. This study has shown immersive classroom simulation activities to be a viable alternative for teacher education programs to engage elementary pre- service teachers in developing skills regarding classroom mathematics and science discourse.

    The way teachers design activities and interact with students during instruction directly impacts students' opportunities to learn (OTL). Previous research has shown the merits of formative assessment (FA) in supporting students' active sense-making, leading to improved student success outcomes. We examined 22 STEM teachers' classroom videos, performing FA in class, taken from two different years of teaching in high-need districts. We then coded the videos according to two basic teaching moves - eliciting information about students' thinking or advanced learning. These moves can also be categorized as more authoritative (univocal) class discourse or more dialogic (multivocal). Our results show that thirteen out of the twenty-two teachers in this study diversified their teaching moves over time as they gained experience while persisting in high-need districts. The results also suggest five different teachers' clusters, representing different changes over time in these teachers' teaching moves. Teachers' reflections on challenges they faced while teaching and changes in their assessment practices over time suggest that changes in their teaching purposes resulted in shifting their teaching moves. These shifts supported their students' different challenges, building meaningful relationships with their students, and allowing them more OTL.
