Title: Development and Deployment of a Mobile Manipulator for Assisting and Entertaining Elders Living in Supportive Apartment Living facilities
In this paper a novel telescopic manipulator was adapted to a mobile robotic base to perform manipulation tasks in an elder care facility. As indicated by our previous work, leisure activities and engagement in socialization were desirable among elders, and a physical game assisted by the robot was chosen to investigate both its acceptance and interaction with the older adults. The robot was deployed at an assisted living center and performed multiple interactions. The manipulator was able to successfully retrieve items from different heights as part of the game and results from post-interaction surveys with elders indicated high perceived usefulness and comfort in having the robot as an assistant in the game.  more » « less

We formulate a Nash-based feedback control law for an Euler-Lagrange system to yield a solution to non-cooperative differential game. The robot manipulators are broadly utilized in industrial units on the account of their reliable, fast, and precise motions, while consuming a significant lumped amount of energy. Therefore, an optimal control strategy needs to be implemented in addressing efficiency issues, while delivering accuracy obligation. As a case study, we here focus on a 7-DOF robot manipulator through formulating a two-player feedback nonzero-sum differential game. First, coupled Euler-Lagrangian dynamic equations of the manipulator are briefly presented. Then, we formulate the feedback Nash equilibrium solution in order to achieve perfect trajectory tracking. Finally, the performance of the Nash-based feedback controller is analytically and experimentally examined. Simulation and experimental results reveal that the control law yields almost perfect tracking and achieves closed-loop stability.

  3. Infant-robot interaction has been increasingly gaining attention, yet, there are limited studies on the development of robot-assisted environments that promote perceptual-motor development in infants. This paper assesses the feasibility of operating a spherical mobile robot, Sphero, to engage infants in perceptual-motor exploration of an open area. Two case scenarios were considered. In the first case, Sphero was the only robot providing stimuli in the environment. In the second case, two additional robots provided stimuli along with Sphero. Pilot data from two infants were analyzed to extract information on their visual attention to and physical interaction with Sphero, as well as their motor actions. Overall, infants (i) expressed a preference to Sphero regardless of stimulation levels, and (ii) moved out of stationary postures in an effort to chase and approach Sphero. These preliminary findings provide support for the future implementation of Sphero in robot-assisted learning environments to promote perceptual-motor development in infants.

  4. Boreda Indigenous knowledge prescribed that humans respect all entities with whom they co-inhabit, including stone. Humans, stone, and water’s reciprocal relationships prompted their participation in each other becoming fetuses, infants, children, youth, married adults, mature adults, elders, and ancestors. Life was a co-production between humans and non-humans, such that stone and water could inflict harm or bring well-being to humans. Non-human beings, such as flaked stone tools, were evidence of engaging in correct interaction ‘practice’ (time, place, and actor) with other beings – a process of mutual respect and responsibility and one in which there was no end or final “product”.

  5. Safety and security education are important part of technology related education, because of recent number of increase in safety and security related incidents. Game based learning is an emerging and rapidly advancing forms of computer-assisted instruction. Game based learning for safety and security education enables students to learn concepts and skills without the risk of physical injury and security breach. In this paper, a pedestal grinder safety game and physical security game have been developed using industrial standard modeling and game development software. The average score of the knowledge test of grinder safety game was 82%, which is higher than traditional lecture only instruction method. In addition, the survey of physical security game shows 84% average satisfaction ratio from high school students who played the game during the summer camp. The results of these studies indicated that game based learning method can enhance students’ learning without potential harm to the students.
