Title: Co-Design for Learner Help-Giving Across Physical and Digital Contexts
With the growing integration of technology in the classrooms, learners can now develop collaboration skills by applying them across diverse contexts. While this represents a great opportunity, it also brings challenges due to an increased need to support individual learners across multiple learning activities. We propose a technology-enhanced learning ecosystem called UbiCoS that supports learner help-giving during face-to-face collaboration and across three different digital learning environments: an interactive digital textbook, an online Q&A forum, and a teachable agent. In this paper, we present a first step in the development of UbiCoS: five co-design sessions with 16 learners that give insight into learners’ perceptions of help-giving. The findings provided us with technology-related and curriculum-related design opportunities for facilitating learner interaction across multiple platforms.  more » « less

  1. Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) environments are often designed to support collaboration within a single digital platform. However, with the growth of technology in classrooms, students often find themselves working in multiple contexts (i.e., a student might work face-to-face with a peer on one task and then move to engaging in an online discussion for homework). We have created a CSCL environment that aims to support student help-giving across a variety of digital platforms. This paper describes three cycles of a design-based research study that aims to design a system to support help-giving and improve interaction quantity and quality across different contexts as well as to better understand whether students benefit by the addition of multiple contexts. The paper shares major refinements across the three cycles that worked to balance research, pedagogical, and technological goals to improve students’ help-giving behavior in a middle-school mathematics classroom.

  2. A key promise of adaptive collaborative learning support is the ability to improve learning outcomes by providing individual students with the help they need to collaborate more effectively. These systems have focused on a single platform. However, recent technology-supported collaborative learning platforms allow students to collaborate in different contexts: computer-supported classroom environments, network based online learning environments, or virtual learning environments with pedagogical agents. Our goal is to better understand how students participate in collaborative behaviors across platforms, focusing on a specific type of collaboration - help-giving. We conducted a classroom study (N = 20) to understand how students engage in help-giving across two platforms: an interactive digital learning environment and an online Q&A community. The results indicate that help-giving behavior across the two platforms is mostly influenced by the context rather than by individual differences. We discuss the implications of the results and suggest design recommendations for developing an adaptive collaborative learning support system that promotes learning and transfer.

    Open-ended learning environments (OELEs) involve high learner agency in defining learning goals and multiple pathways to achieve those goals. These tasks involve learners transitioning through self-regulated learning (SRL) phases by actively setting goals, applying different strategies for those goals, and monitoring performance to update their strategies. However, because of the flexibility, how learners react to impasses and errors has a critical influence on their learning. An intelligent pedagogical agent (IPA) continuously modeling learner activities could help support learners in these environments. However, this continuous comprehension of behaviors and strategies is difficult in OELEs with evolving goals, ill-defined problem structures, and learning sequences. In this paper, we draw from the literature on SRL phases and cognitive states to investigate the utility of two different methods, Sequence Mapping, and Hidden Markov Models, in building learner activity models from log data collected from a summer camp with 14 middle school girls in an open-design environment. We evaluate the effectiveness of these models separately, and combined, in identifying 7 states: Forethought, Engaged Concentration, Acting, Monitoring, Wheel Spinning, Mind Wandering, and Reflect and Repair. Lastly, we recommend dialogue intervention strategies for an IPA to support learning in OELEs.

  4. Co-creative proccesses between people can be characterized by rich dialogue that carries each person's ideas into the collaborative space. When people co-create an artifact that is both technical and aesthetic, their dialogue reflects the interplay between these two dimensions. However, the dialogue mechanisms that express this interplay and the extent to which they are related to outcomes, such as peer satisfaction, are not well understood. This paper reports on a study of 68 high school learner dyads' textual dialogues as they create music by writing code together in a digital learning environment for musical remixing. We report on a novel dialogue taxonomy built to capture the technical and aesthetic dimensions of learners' collaborative dialogues. We identified dialogue act n-grams (sequences of length 1, 2, or 3) that are present within the corpus and discovered five significant n-gram predictors for whether a learner felt satisfied with their partner during the collaboration. The learner was more likely to report higher satisfaction with their partner when the learner frequently acknowledges their partner, exchanges positive feedback with their partner, and their partner proposes an idea and elaborates on the idea. In contrast, the learner is more likely to report lower satisfaction with their partner when the learner frequently accepts back-to-back proposals from their partner and when the partner responds to the learner's statements with positive feedback. This work advances understanding of collaborative dialogue within co-creative domains and suggests dialogue strategies that may be helpful to foster co-creativity as learners collaborate to produce a creative artifact. The findings also suggest important areas of focus for intelligent or adaptive systems that aim to support learners during the co-creative process.

  5. Touch is often omitted or viewed as unnecessary in digital learning. Lack of touch feedback limits the accessibility and multimodal capacity of digital educational content. Touchscreens with vibratory, haptic feedback are prevalent, yet this kind of feedback is often under-utilized. This work provides initial investigations into the design, development, and use of vibratory feedback within multimodal, interactive, educational simulations on touchscreen devices by learners with and without visual impairments. The objective of this work is to design and evaluate different haptic paradigms that could support interaction and learning in educational simulations. We investigated the implementation of four haptic paradigms in two physics simulations. Interviews were conducted with eight learners (five sighted learners; three learners with visual impairments) on one simulation and initial results are shared. We discuss the learner outcomes of each paradigm and how they impact design and development moving forward.
