Background and Context: Most large-scale statewide initiatives of the Computer Science for All (CS for All) movement have focused on the classroom level. Critical questions remain about building school and district leadership capacity to support teachers while implementing equitable computer science education that is scalable and sustainable. Objective: This statewide research-practice partnership, involving university researchers and school leaders from 14 local education agencies (LEA) from district and county offices, addresses the following research question: What do administrators identify as most helpful for understanding issues related to equitable computer science implementation when engaging with a guide and workshop we collaboratively developed to help leadership in such efforts? Method: Participant surveys, interviews, and workshop observations were analyzed to understand best practices for professional development supporting educational leaders. Findings: Administrators value computer science professional development resources that: (a) have a clear focus on “equity;” (b) engage with data and examples that deepen understandings of equity; (c) provide networking opportunities; (d) have explicit workshop purpose and activities; and (e) support deeper discussions of computer science implementation challenges through pairing a workshop and a guide. Implications: Utilizing Ishimaru and Galloway’s (2014) framework for equitable leadership practices, this study offers an actionable construct for equitable implementation of computer science including (a) how to build equity leadership and vision; (b) how to enact that vision; and (c) how to scale and sustain that vision. While this construct applies to equitable leadership practices more broadly across all disciplines, we found its application particularly useful when explicitly focused on equity leadership practices in computer science.

Sustaining Data Repositories: A Workshop on Creating and Implementing Sustainability Plans
In January 2018, ESA organized and hosted a workshop titled “Sustaining Data Repositories: A Workshop on Creating and Implementing Sustainability Plans.” This workshop brought together principal investigators from a wide array of data repositories spanning a number of scientific disciplines. Through case study presentations, facilitated discussion, and group work on a process guide for Data Repository (DR) leaders, the workshop began to address the core question: how do DRs become more sustainable? The outcomes from this workshop include the creation of a draft process guide and production of three DR sustainability case studies, in addition to a network of more connected DR professionals. Furthermore, the conversations that took place over the course of this workshop revealed that a diverse group of DR leaders from different disciplines faced similar challenges while managing large amounts of data and navigating the culture of data sharing. Group discussions also revealed insights into existing and potential solutions to these challenges, and opportunities for future actions and policies to increase DR sustainability.

null (Ed.)On January 30-31, 2019 the Board on Mathematical Sciences and Analytics, in collaboration with the Board on Energy and Environmental Systems and the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board, convened a workshop in Washington, D.C. to explore the frontiers of mathematics and data science needs for sustainable urban communities. The workshop strengthened the emerging interdisciplinary network of practitioners, business leaders, government officials, nonprofit stakeholders, academics, and policy makers using data, modeling, and simulation for urban and community sustainability, and addressed common challenges that the community faces. Presentations highlighted urban sustainability research efforts and programs under way, including research into air quality, water management, waste disposal, and social equity and discussed promising urban sustainability research questions that improved use of big data, modeling, and simulation can help address. This publication summarizes the presentation and discussion of the workshop.more » « less

Seagroves, Scott; Barnes, Austin; Metevier, Anne; Porter, Jason; Hunter, Lisa (Ed.)Software development is becoming increasingly ubiquitous in STEM disciplines resulting in the need for education in associated computational skills. To address this need, we designed a "Sustainable Software Development with Collaborative Version Control" workshop in the 2019 Institute for Scientist & Engineer Educators (ISEE) Professional Development Program (PDP). We describe here the development process and following delivery of the workshop. In particular, we explored how to apply an inquiry approach to learning computational skills. By design, PDP activities intertwine content and “cognitive STEM practices,” and teasing apart content and practice is important for STEM education. We encountered challenges with this task because our content — exploring software sustainability with collaborative version control — is much like a practice in itself. We designed our workshop to introduce the critical skill of sustainable software development using collaborative version control systems with an inquiry approach rather than the more typically used, strictly technical approach. We emphasize the authentic, broadly applicable nature of the workshop in which learners jointly design, test, and discuss their own increasingly complex development workflows. The development process for our workshop may be useful for educators who want to introduce software practices to learners from many disparate STEM disciplines that leverage computational methods and require software development to approach research questions.more » « less

Integrating sustainability into university curricula brings diverse challenges and conflicts as separate units vie for ownership of courses and topics. This case study presents a six dimensions sustainability framework developed at The Ohio State University to organize curricula under an inclusive strategy. An interdisciplinary group of faculty focused on sustainability education engaged in a three-phased process including review of sustainability definitions from diverse disciplines; analysis of key aspects of the definitions in conjunction with course descriptions and learning outcomes; and identification of commonalities across the key aspects. This yielded six foundational dimensions of sustainability which serve as a means to assess curricular contributions across University units and topics. The six dimensions framework has been used in practice in multiple contexts. The six dimensions framework provides a way to identify and foster diverse sustainability curricula efforts. It has enabled academic units to describe their disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives on diverse sustainability topics and the University to advance a broad sustainability vision. The six dimensions framework provides a novel “big tent” approach to integration of sustainability into higher education curricula. The framework provides guidance about what counts as sustainability while maintaining the breadth that widens participation.more » « less

While many efforts have begun to increase the diversity of learners in computing and engineering fields, more inclusive approaches are needed to support learners with intersectional identities across gender, race, ethnicity, and ability. A group of 15 experts across a range of computing, engineering, and data-based disciplines joined experts from education and the social sciences to build a plan for intersectional policy, practices, and research in broadening participation in computing and engineering (BPC/BPE) efforts that is inclusive of gender identity. This paper presents findings from the workshop including near and long term agenda items for intersectional research about the inclusion of gender identity in the computing and engineering education research communities; recommendations for advancing collective understanding of and ability to implement principles of intersectionality in future work and; and highlights from existing work, researchers, and thought leaders on the inclusion of gender identity in BPC/BPE initiatives that inform this research agenda. In this report we’ll discuss the origin of the workshop idea, the experience of pulling together the workshop and lessons learned around implementing it, and finally we’ll report about the outputs and emerging outcomes of the workshop experience. This workshop report will contribute to fostering a space where gender expansive work is valued and valuable for those doing, receiving, and being represented by this work. It will also offer readers the opportunity to conceptualize how to expand and refine the inclusion of gender identity as part of their current and future BPC/BPE initiatives. We end with an explicit call for more gender expansive and gender liberationist work be undertaken through the auspices of ASEE.more » « less
