Title: Effects of Three Interventions on Children’s Spatial Structuring and Coordination of Area Units
The authors examine the effects of 3 interventions designed to support Grades 2–5 children's growth in measuring rectangular regions in different ways. Their findings indicate that creating a complete record of the structure of a 2-dimensional array—by drawing organized rows and columns of equal-sized unit squares—best supported children in conceptualizing how units were built, organized, and coordinated, leading to improved performance.  more » « less

  1. A bstract We derive the component structure of 11D, N = 1/8 supergravity linearized around eleven-dimensional Minkowski space. This theory represents 4 local supersymmetries closing onto 4 of the 11 spacetime translations without the use of equations of motion. It may be interpreted as adding 201 auxiliary bosons and 56 auxiliary fermions to the physical supergravity multiplet for a total of 376 + 376 components. These components and their transformations are organized into representations of SL(2; C ) × G 2 .

  2. Abstract Tropical easterly waves (TEWs) are a recurrent mode of low‐latitude weather that are often convectively coupled and impact precipitation extremes. Previous work has examined the development of TEWs and their associated precipitation for individual seasons or regional domains, but no studies exist that document the importance of TEW precipitation globally. This study quantifies the precipitation associated with TEWs across the entire tropics using satellite (Integrated Multi‐satellitE Retrievals for the Global Precipitation Measurement [IMERG]) and reanalysis (Modern‐Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 [MERRA‐2]) data. Traditional space‐time filtering of precipitation reveals a mostly similar climatological power distribution for westward traveling, synoptic period disturbances corresponding to TEWs within all data sets. Using objective tracking, we find that areas with maximum TEW frequency such as the North Atlantic, Equatorial Pacific, and Indian Ocean have the highest accumulation of TEW‐associated precipitation. TEWs account for at most 30% of total annual precipitation in regions where they commonly occur and 1%–5% over much of the tropics. Vertically collocated storms, where the 850 and 700 hPa tracks correspond with each other, have higher conditional rain rates and indicate that waves with vertical development produce stronger and more organized convection. We find similar regional patterns using MERRA‐2 precipitation and latent heating, although the importance and contribution of TEWs to the background are reduced compared to IMERG. While the broad pattern of TEW associated precipitation in MERRA‐2 is like observations, the underestimation of rainfall contributions from TEWs, coupled with occasional false alarms in reanalysis data, suggests that MERRA‐2 does not capture organized convection within TEWs correctly.

    Coordination within and between organisms is one of the most complex abilities of living systems, requiring the concerted regulation of many physiological constituents, and this complexity can be particularly difficult to explain by appealing to physics. A valuable framework for understanding biological coordination is the coordinative structure, a self-organized assembly of physiological elements that collectively performs a specific function. Coordinative structures are characterized by three properties: (1) multiple coupled components, (2) soft-assembly, and (3) functional organization. Coordinative structures have been hypothesized to be specific instantiations of dissipative structures, non-equilibrium, self-organized, physical systems exhibiting complex pattern formation in structure and behaviors. We pursued this hypothesis by testing for these three properties of coordinative structures in an electrically-driven dissipative structure. Our system demonstrates dynamic reorganization in response to functional perturbation, a behavior of coordinative structures called reciprocal compensation. Reciprocal compensation is corroborated by a dynamical systems model of the underlying physics. This coordinated activity of the system appears to derive from the system’s intrinsic end-directed behavior to maximize the rate of entropy production. The paper includes three primary components: (1) empirical data on emergent coordinated phenomena in a physical system, (2) computational simulations of this physical system, and (3) theoretical evaluation of the empirical and simulated results in the context of physics and the life sciences. This study reveals similarities between an electrically-driven dissipative structure that exhibits end-directed behavior and the goal-oriented behaviors of more complex living systems.

Abstract In simulations of radiative‐convective equilibrium (RCE), and with sufficiently large domains, organized convection enhances top of atmosphere outgoing longwave radiation due to the reduced cloud coverage and drying of the mean climate state. As a consequence, estimates of climate sensitivity and cloud feedbacks may be affected. Here, we use a multi‐model ensemble configured in RCE to study the dependence of explicitly calculated cloud feedbacks on the existence of organized convection, the degree to which convection within a domain organizes, and the change in organized convection with warming sea surface temperature. We find that, when RCE simulations with organized convection are compared to RCE simulations without organized convection, the propensity for convection to organize in RCE causes cloud feedbacks to have larger magnitudes due to the inclusion of low clouds, accompanied by a much larger inter‐model spread. While we find no dependence of the cloud feedback on changes in organization with warming, models that are, on average, more organized have less positive, or even negative, cloud feedbacks. This is primarily due to changes in cloud optical depth in the shortwave, specifically high clouds thickening with warming in strongly organized domains. The shortwave cloud optical depth feedback also plays an important role in causing the tropical anvil cloud area feedback to be positive which is directly opposed to the expected negative or near zero cloud feedback found in prior work.

  5. Abstract Citizen-generated counter speech is a promising way to fight hate speech and promote peaceful, non-polarized discourse. However, there is a lack of large-scale longitudinal studies of its effectiveness for reducing hate speech. To this end, we perform an exploratory analysis of the effectiveness of counter speech using several different macro- and micro-level measures to analyze 180,000 political conversations that took place on German Twitter over four years. We report on the dynamic interactions of hate and counter speech over time and provide insights into whether, as in ‘classic’ bullying situations, organized efforts are more effective than independent individuals in steering online discourse. Taken together, our results build a multifaceted picture of the dynamics of hate and counter speech online. While we make no causal claims due to the complexity of discourse dynamics, our findings suggest that organized hate speech is associated with changes in public discourse and that counter speech—especially when organized—may help curb hateful rhetoric in online discourse.
