Modern control theory provides us with a spectrum of methods for studying the interconnection of dynamic systems using input-output properties of the interconnected subsystems. Perhaps the most advanced framework for such inputoutput analysis is the use of Integral Quadratic Constraints (IQCs), which considers the interconnection of a nominal linear system with an unmodelled nonlinear or uncertain subsystem with known input-output properties. Although these methods are widely used for Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs), there have been fewer attempts to extend IQCs to infinitedimensional systems. In this paper, we present an IQC-based framework for Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) and Delay Differential Equations (DDEs). First, we introduce infinitedimensional signal spaces, operators, and feedback interconnections. Next, in the main result, we propose a formulation of hard IQC-based input-output stability conditions, allowing for infinite-dimensional multipliers. We then show how to test hard IQC conditions with infinite-dimensional multipliers on a nominal linear PDE or DDE system via the Partial Integral Equation (PIE) state-space representation using a sufficient version of the Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov lemma (KYP). The results are then illustrated using four example problems with uncertainty and nonlinearity.

Integral Quadratic Constraints: Exact Convergence Rates and Worst-Case Trajectories
We consider a linear time-invariant system in discrete time where the state and input signals satisfy a set of integral quadratic constraints (IQCs). Analogous to the autonomous linear systems case, we define a new notion of spectral radius that exactly characterizes stability of this system. In particular, (i) when the spectral radius is less than one, we show that the system is asymptotically stable for all trajectories that satisfy the IQCs, and (ii) when the spectral radius is equal to one, we construct an unstable trajectory that satisfies the IQCs. Furthermore, we connect our new definition of the spectral radius to the existing literature on IQCs.

Achieving optimal steady-state performance in real-time is an increasingly necessary requirement of many critical infrastructure systems. In pursuit of this goal, this paper builds a systematic design framework of feedback controllers for Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) systems that continuously track the optimal solution of some predefined optimization problem. We logically divide the proposed solution into three components. The first component estimates the system state from the output measurements. The second component uses the estimated state and computes a drift direction based on an optimization algorithm. The third component calculates an input to the LTI system that aims to drive the system toward the optimal steady-state. We analyze the equilibrium characteristics of the closed-loop system and provide conditions for optimality and stability. Our analysis shows that the proposed solution guarantees optimal steady-state performance, even in the presence of constant disturbances. Furthermore, by leveraging recent results on the analysis of optimization algorithms using Integral Quadratic Constraints (IQCs), the proposed framework can translate input-output properties of our optimization component into sufficient conditions, based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), for global exponential asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. Summary This article presents a dissipativity approach for robustness analysis using the framework of integral quadratic constraints (IQCs). The derived results apply for linear time‐varying nominal systems with uncertain initial conditions. IQC multipliers are used to describe the sets of allowable uncertainty operators, and signal IQC multipliers are used to describe the sets of allowable disturbance signals. The novel concepts of dichotomic nodes and their corresponding factorizations are introduced, which allow for the aforementioned multipliers to be general time‐varying operators. The results are illustrated via the robustness analysis of a flight controller for an unmanned aircraft system tasked to perform a Split‐S maneuver.more » « less

Abstract We establish a new perturbation theory for orthogonal polynomials using a Riemann–Hilbert approach and consider applications in numerical linear algebra and random matrix theory. This new approach shows that the orthogonal polynomials with respect to two measures can be effectively compared using the difference of their Stieltjes transforms on a suitably chosen contour. Moreover, when two measures are close and satisfy some regularity conditions, we use the theta functions of a hyperelliptic Riemann surface to derive explicit and accurate expansion formulae for the perturbed orthogonal polynomials. In contrast to other approaches, a key strength of the methodology is that estimates can remain valid as the degree of the polynomial grows. The results are applied to analyze several numerical algorithms from linear algebra, including the Lanczos tridiagonalization procedure, the Cholesky factorization, and the conjugate gradient algorithm. As a case study, we investigate these algorithms applied to a general spiked sample covariance matrix model by considering the eigenvector empirical spectral distribution and its limits. For the first time, we give precise estimates on the output of the algorithms, applied to this wide class of random matrices, as the number of iterations diverges. In this setting, beyond the first order expansion, we also derive a new mesoscopic central limit theorem for the associated orthogonal polynomials and other quantities relevant to numerical algorithms.more » « less

null (Ed.)Recent advances in the blockchain research have been made in two important directions. One is refined resilience analysis utilizing game theory to study the consequences of selfish behavior of users (miners), and the other is the extension from a linear (chain) structure to a non-linear (graphical) structure for performance improvements, such as IOTA and Graphcoin. The first question that comes to mind is what improvements that a blockchain system would see by leveraging these new advances. In this paper, we consider three major properties for a blockchain system: α-partial verification, scalability, and finality-duration. We establish a formal framework and prove that no blockchain system can achieve ?-partial verification for any fixed constant ?, high scalability, and low finality-duration simultaneously. We observe that classical blockchain systems like Bitcoin achieves full verification (α=1) and low finality-duration, Ethereum 2.0 Sharding achieves low finality-duration and high scalability. We are interested in whether it is possible to partially satisfy the three properties.more » « less
