The mid-IR spectroscopic properties of doped low-phonon and crystals grown by the Bridgman technique have been investigated. Using optical excitations at and , both crystals exhibited IR emissions at , , , and at room temperature. The mid-IR emission at 4.5 µm, originating from the transition, showed a long emission lifetime of for doped , whereas doped exhibited a shorter lifetime of . The measured emission lifetimes of the state were nearly independent of the temperature, indicating a negligibly small nonradiative decay rate through multiphonon relaxation, as predicted by the energy-gap law for low-maximum-phonon energy hosts. The room temperature stimulated emission cross sections for the transition in doped and were determined to be and , respectively. The results of Judd–Ofelt analysis are presented and discussed.

In this Letter, the electron-blocking-layer (EBL)-free AlGaN ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) using a strip-in-a-barrier structure have been proposed. The quantum barrier (QB) structures are systematically engineered by integrating a 1 nm intrinsic strip into the middle of QBs. The resulted structures exhibit significantly reduced electron leakage and improved hole injection into the active region, thus generating higher carrier radiative recombination. Our study shows that the proposed structure improves radiative recombination by , reduces electron leakage by times, and enhances optical power by at 60 mA current injection compared to a conventional AlGaN EBL LED structure. Moreover, the EBL-free strip-in-a-barrier UV LED records the maximum internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of which is higher, and IQE droop is , which is less compared to the conventional AlGaN EBL LED structure at wavelength. Hence, the proposed EBL-free AlGaN LED is the potential solution to enhance the optical power and produce highly efficient UV emitters.more » « less

We formulate and prove a Conner–Floyd isomorphism for the algebraic K-theory of arbitrary qcqs derived schemes. To that end, we study a stable -category of non- -invariant motivic spectra, which turns out to be equivalent to the -category of fundamental motivic spectra satisfying elementary blowup excision, previously introduced by the first and third authors. We prove that this -category satisfies -homotopy invariance and weighted -homotopy invariance, which we use in place of -homotopy invariance to obtain analogues of several key results from -homotopy theory. These allow us in particular to define a universal oriented motivic -ring spectrum . We then prove that the algebraic K-theory of a qcqs derived scheme can be recovered from its -cohomology via a Conner–Floyd isomorphism\[ \]where is the Lazard ring and . We present a compact heterodyne laser interferometer developed for high-sensitivity displacement sensing applications. This interferometer consists of customized prisms and wave plates assembled as a quasi-monolithic unit to realize a miniaturized system. The interferometer design adopts a common-mode rejection scheme to provide a high rejection ratio to common environmental noise. Experimental tests in vacuum show a displacement sensitivity level of at and as low as above . The prototype unit is in size and weighs , allowing subsequent integration in compact systems.more » « less

Amorphous tantala ( ) thin films were deposited by reactive ion beam sputtering with simultaneous low energy assist or bombardment. Under the conditions of the experiment, the as-deposited thin films are amorphous and stoichiometric. The refractive index and optical band gap of thin films remain unchanged by ion bombardment. Around 20% improvement in room temperature mechanical loss and 60% decrease in absorption loss are found in samples bombarded with 100-eV . A detrimental influence from low energy bombardment on absorption loss and mechanical loss is observed. Low energy bombardment removes excess oxygen point defects, while bombardment introduces defects into the tantala films.more » « less
