Title: Coverage Analysis of Relay Assisted Millimeter Wave Cellular Networks with Spatial Correlation
We propose a novel analytical framework for evaluating the coverage performance of a millimeter wave (mmWave) cellular network where idle user equipments (UEs) act as relays. In this network, the base station (BS) adopts either the direct mode to transmit to the destination UE, or the relay mode if the direct mode fails, where the BS transmits to the relay UE and then the relay UE transmits to the destination UE. To address the drastic rotational movements of destination UEs in practice, we propose to adopt selection combining at destination UEs. New expression is derived for the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) coverage probability of the network. Using numerical results, we first demonstrate the accuracy of our new expression. Then we show that ignoring spatial correlation, which has been commonly adopted in the literature, leads to severe over estimation of the SINR coverage probability. Furthermore, we show that introducing relays into a mmWave cellular network vastly improves the coverage performance. In addition, we show that the optimal BS density maximizing the SINR coverage probability can be determined by using our analysis.  more » « less

  1. The use of Millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum in cellular communications has recently attracted growing interest to support the expected massive increase in traffic demands. However, the high path-loss at mmWave frequencies poses severe challenges. In this paper, we analyze the potential coverage gains of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), as hovering relays, in integrated access and backhaul (IAB) mmWave cellular scenarios. Specifically, we utilize the WinProp software package, which employs ray tracing methodology, to study the propagation characteristics of outdoor mmWave channels at 30 and 60 GHz frequency bands in a Manhattan-like environment. In doing so, we propose the implementation of amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) relaying mechanisms in the WinProp software. We show how the 3D deployment of UAVs can be defined based on the coverage ray tracing maps at access and backhaul links. Furthermore, we propose an adaptive UAV transmission power for the AF relaying. We demonstrate, with the aid of ray tracing simulations, the performance gains of the proposed relaying modes in terms of downlink coverage, and the received signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR).

  2. Beam alignment is a critical aspect in millimeter wave (mm-wave) cellular systems. However, the inherent limitations of channel estimation result in beam alignment errors, which degrade the system performance. For systems with a large number of antennas at the base station, downlink channel estimation is performed using uplink pilot signals. The beam alignment errors, thus, depend on the user equipment (UE) transmit power, which needs to be managed properly as the UEs are battery powered. This paper investigates how the use of uplink power control for the transmission of pilot signals in a mm-wave network affects the downlink beam alignment errors, which depend on various link parameters. We use stochastic geometry and statistics of the Student's t -distribution to develop an analytical model, which captures the interplay between the uplink power control and downlink signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) coverage probability. Our results indicate that using uplink power control significantly reduces UE power consumption without adversely affecting the downlink SNR coverage.

  3. Abstract: Impairments such as time varying phase noise (PHN) and carrier frequency offset (CFO) result in loss of synchronization and poor performance of multi-relay communication systems. Joint estimation of these impairments is necessary in order to correctly decode the received signal at the destination. In this paper, we address spectrally efficient multi-relay transmission scenarios where all the relays simultaneously communicate with the destination. We propose an iterative pilot-aided algorithm based on the expectation conditional maximization for joint estimation of multipath channels, Wiener PHNs, and CFOs in decode-and-forward-based multi-relay orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems. Next, a new expression of the hybrid Cramér-Rao lower bound (HCRB) for the multi-parameter estimation problem is derived. Finally, an iterative receiver based on an extended Kalman filter for joint data detection and PHN tracking is employed. Numerical results show that the proposed estimator outperforms existing algorithms and its mean square error performance is close to the derived HCRB at different signal-to-noise ratios for different PHN variances. In addition, the combined estimation algorithm and the iterative receiver can significantly improve average bit-error rate (BER) performance compared with existing algorithms. In addition, the BER performance of the proposed system is close to the ideal case of perfect channel impulse responses, PHNs, and CFOs estimation.

  4. Cooperative relays improve reliability and coverage in wireless networks by providing multiple paths for data transmission. Relaying will play an essential role in vehicular networks at higher frequency bands, where mobility and frequent signal blockages cause link outages. To ensure connectivity in a relay-aided vehicular network, the relay selection policy should be designed to efficiently find unblocked relays. Inspired by recent advances in beam management in mobile millimeter wave (mmWave) networks, this paper address the question: how can the best relay be selected with minimal overhead from beam management? In this regard, we formulate a sequential decision problem to jointly optimize relay selection and beam management. We propose a joint relay selection and beam management policy based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) using the Markov property of beam in- dices and beam measurements. The proposed DRL-based algorithm learns time-varying thresholds that adapt to the dynamic channel conditions and traffic patterns. Numeri- cal experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms baselines without prior channel knowledge. Moreover, the DRL-based algorithm can maintain high spectral efficiency under fast-varying channels.

  5. In this paper, we investigate the design of high throughput relay-assisted millimeter-wave (mmWave) backhaul networks in urban areas. Different from most related works, we consider the deployment of dedicated simple mmWave relay devices to help enhance the line-of-sight (LoS) connectivity of the backhaul network in urban areas with abundant obstacles. Given a set of (logical) backhaul links between base stations in the network, we propose an algorithm to find high-throughput LoS paths with relays for all logical links by minimizing interference within and between paths. We also propose methods to modify the backhaul topology to increase the probability of finding high-throughput paths using our algorithm. Extensive simulations, based on a 3-D model of a section of downtown Atlanta, demonstrate that high-throughput topologies, with minimal inter-path and intra-path interference, are feasible in most cases. The analyses also yield some insights on the mmWave backhaul network design problem.
